Geographic Information Systems (GIS) 2 The set of software, hardware, people, institutions and standards, which together deal with acquiring, storing, manipulating, analyzing, managing and presenting all types of geospatial data
Desktop GIS users 3 Popular, easy-to-use applications to visualize, edit, manipulate & process geospatial data: QGIS, ArcGIS, gvsig, etc.
Desktop GIS developers 4 Suitable environments to create customized modules, add-ons & plugins: advanced/specific functionalities routines for repetitive tasks modelling & simulation

The Digital Earth 11 A multi-dimensional, multi-resolution model of the Earth allowing to contextualize the huge amount of georeferenced information related to the physic and social-economic environment (Gore 1998): a challenge for managing geo Big Data every day we create 1018 bytes of data and the 80% are georeferenced or georeferenceable allows navigation through space and time (accessing historical data as well as future predictions based on models) responds to the needs of multiple stakeholders: scientists, decision makers, communities, citizens, children, etc. based on open access and participation (GeoWeb 2.0, Science 2.0, etc.) through multi-platforms data, information, services, models, scenarios and forecasts can be accessed from current and future devices Gore, A., 1998 The Digital Earth: underdstanding our planet in the 21 st century,
The Internet of Everything 12 Objects (or things) will be linked and communicate through the network and will react in different ways according to their location and time (26 billion devices are expected to be connected within 2020): Internet of Information Internet of Places Internet of People Internet of Things Internet of Everything
Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) 13 A coordinated set of agreements on technology standards, institutional arrangements and policies that enable the discovery and use of spatial information by users and for goals other than those it was created for example: INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe)
Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) 14 A coordinated set of agreements on technology standards, institutional arrangements and policies that enable the discovery and use of spatial information by users and for goals other than those it was created for example: INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) INTEROPERABILITY (ISO TC211, OGC, etc.)

Conclusions 25 Geospatial data play a crucial role in the management of hydrogeological emergencies and there are mature technologies to exploit them: real-time and massive information need to properly access, store, process, use and distribute it through a Spatial Data (Web) Infrastructure interoperability of data & services (STANDARDS!) Web visualization as a key access to the data User-collected data represent a (potentially) invaluable information: they come continuously and at no cost can be extremely useful in case of disasters they come with no assurance of quality how to treat them?
