1 Core Communications Teamwork Report Building Synergy Reducing Conflict Using personality type for personal effectiveness in the workplace Designed to help employees communicate with their teammates. Synergy is the highest activity of life; it creates new untapped alternatives; it values and exploits the mental, emotional, and psychological differences between people. Stephen Covey Conflict is inevitable in a team... in fact, to achieve synergistic solutions, a variety of ideas and approaches are needed. These are the ingredients for conflict. Susan Gerke No matter what the official company line is, or the expectations of a role, or the regulations of an organization, people will end up doing what they do best. Gallup research indicates that an individual s [personality strengths] are strong, recurring, and unchanging patterns relating to how each person filters input and responds to it. Talent is not a lightbulb; it can t be turned on or off at will. Curt Coffman

2 1 Core Function Communications TypeFocus has created an organizational culture model that helps people communicate their personality strengths quickly and easily. This model summarizes organizational culture along personality strengths and highlights a fundamental truth: every combination of preferences adds value to the team. When teammates work together in their areas of strength, synergy will be maximized. The core function model comes from Carl Jung's personality theory. He believed that an effective personality balanced two basic functions - bringing information in from the world (Sensing/Intuition) and then making decisions on that information (Thinking/Feeling). Sensing-types are more interested in the facts (what can be directly sensed or experienced), so they develop an appreciation for a practical and realistic approach to life. Intuitive-types, however, are more interested in the meaning behind the facts (what the pattern of facts mean) so they develop more of an exploratory, creative view of life. Thinking-types tend to make decisions based on impersonal factors like logic, precedent, standards or policy. Feeling-types tend to make decisions based on more personal issues like the impact the decision will have on teammates or clients. Thinkers tend to become businesslike; feelers tend to become empathetic.

3 2 Heart Red Jungian functions: Intuition + Feeling Keyword Description: Compassionate Innovator Leadership style: Facilitative Metaphor: School Counsellor Intuitive-types prefer to go beyond their direct experience and focus on the meaning of the information. This gives them a "big picture" outlook on life. They tune into underlying patterns so they tend to be future-oriented and therefore become creative and innovative. Feeling-types make decisions using their own personal criteria. This often means taking into account the impact that decision will have on someone's life. They tend to treat everyone individually; they value mercy. Feelers ask these questions when deciding: "How do I feel about it? How will it affect someone else?" The person in the Red quadrant blends compassion with conceptualization. Reds often develop into sensitive and insightful teammates who understand group dynamics. A good metaphor for a Red teammate is a school counsellor: connected to his or her work relationships with the purpose of making life better. Teammates in this quadrant are committed to personal growth. Red teammates appreciate a facilitative leadership style, which means working with their teammates. Red leaders value consensus and harmonious relationships. Classic Red Motto: To a valiant heart nothing is impossible. Contemporary Red Motto: Follow your passion. Success Defined: Developing potential at the organizational level. Red Strengths: Sensitive to people s needs Focus on developing human potential Encouraging bring out the best in others Communicating with Reds: Reds value harmony and the big-picture; when communicating your ideas to them: Position recommendations using employee rather than organizational payoffs Relate ideas to the mission and purpose of the team Identify the personal impact your proposal will have on individuals However, remember that Reds need your perspective to avoid making mistakes as well. Your team will be served best when all colours work together in synergy.

4 3 Solid Green Jungian functions: Sensing + Thinking Keyword description: Realistic Thinker Leadership style: Traditional Metaphor: School principal Sensing-types prefer to learn about their world through experience. Because they focus on what they can actually see or hear or touch, they often develop a practical and realistic outlook on the world. Thinking-types prefer to make decisions based on impersonal criteria like principles and logic. Because they treat everyone the same, they tend to become fair and businesslike. They value justice. Thinkers ask these questions when deciding: "Is it logical? Can I support the decision in principle?" The person in the Green quadrant is well grounded - think of roots sinking deeply into the earth, anchoring the person into the heart of the organization. Greens often develop into solid and dependable teammates who are good problem solvers. A good metaphor for a Green teammate is a school principal who pays attention to organizational details and is fair and professional about "taking care of business." Teammates in this quadrant approach work issues in a down-to-earth and sensible manner. Green teammates appreciate a traditional leadership style which means developing project plans, meeting deadlines and solving problems. Green leaders value getting the job done. Classic Green Motto: Always prepared. Contemporary Green Motto: What gets measured gets done. Success Defined: Efficiency doing a good job with existing resources. Green Strengths: Problem-solver Accurate and detailed Fair and businesslike Communicating with Greens: Greens value clear goals and roles; when communicating your ideas to them: Focus on facts Clarify work roles Link recommendations to improved efficiency However, remember that Greens need your perspective to avoid making mistakes as well. 5 4 Sky Blue Jungian functions: Intuition + Thinking Keyword description: Imaginative Analyzer Leadership style: Visionary Metaphor: Scientist who discovers Intuitive-types prefer to go beyond their direct experience and focus on the meaning of the information. This gives them a "big picture" outlook on life. They tune into underlying patterns so they tend to be future-oriented and therefore become creative and innovative. Thinking-types prefer to make decisions based on impersonal criteria like principles and logic. Because they treat everyone the same, they tend to become fair and businesslike. They value justice. Thinkers ask these questions when deciding: "Is it logical? Can I support the decision in principle?" The person in the Blue quadrant is an innovative thinker, a big-picture person who can see over the horizon. Blues often develop into organizationally innovative teammates who challenge the status quo. A good metaphor for a Blue teammate is a school science teacher who appreciates theory and whose laboratory is the organization. Teammates in this quadrant are committed to organizational competence. Blue teammates appreciate visionary leaders who project themselves and their organizations into the future. Blue leaders value competency and create the organizational framework for success. Classic Blue Motto: Fortune favors the bold. Contemporary Blue Motto: Go big or go home. Success Defined: Beating the competition through strategic advantages. Blue Strengths: Understand complex organizations Strong vision of the future Create order from chaos Communicating with Blues: Blues value logic and the big-picture; when communicating your ideas to them: Position ideas using organizational rather than employee payoffs Think in terms of cost-benefit analyses Relate recommendations to strategic advantages However, remember that Blues need your perspective to avoid making mistakes as well. Your team will be served best when all colours work together in synergy.

6 5 Warm Yellow Jungian functions: Sensing + Feeling Keyword description: Responsive Helper Leadership style: Supportive Metaphor: Favourite teacher Sensing-types prefer to learn about their world through experience. Because they focus on what they can actually see or hear or touch, they often develop a practical and realistic outlook on the world. Feeling-types make decisions using their own personal criteria. This often means taking into account the impact that decision will have on someone's life. They tend to treat everyone individually; they value mercy. Feelers ask these questions when deciding: "How do I feel about it? How will it affect someone else?" The person in the Yellow quadrant values helping in a hands-on, practical manner. Yellows often develop into responsive and caring teammates. A good metaphor for a Yellow is the favourite teacher who patiently helps students. Teammates in this quadrant are supportive of the team and quick to lend a hand. Yellow teammates appreciate a supportive leader who helps them. Yellow leaders value harmony in achieving their goals.
