It will serve as a basis of discussion with prospective employers and as principal evidence of mastery of the chosen discipline. The dissertation aims to provide a link between the various subjects studied in the degree, while encouraging the production of independent research. It also aims to develop your critical nature; your ability to select appropriate methods of investigation and capacity to produce sound conclusions based on your research findings. It aims: - To encourage independent thinking and initiative. - To encourage the production of work of an individual and critical nature. - To develop an ability to select appropriate methods of investigation and to produce sound conclusions based on findings. - To provide an exercise in analysis and presentation. - To assist in developing the facility to communicate clearly and concisely. - To provide a link between the various subjects studied in the degree. - To give you responsibility for, and experience of, carrying out a project and of planning your time and resources appropriately. Content outline You are free to choose your own project topic, although it must be approved by your project supervisor. Any area relevant to your degree is eligible. Clearly, it is preferable for you to choose a subject close to your personal interests and career ambitions. You will need to ensure access to suitable data sources and should choose a topic, which presents a suitable challenge. Students who have completed a placement year usually select a topic relevant to their placement company.

2 WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: - Understand the process of formulating an appropriate research topic - Show knowledge of main research methodologies - Understand methods of analysis of empirical data - Establish a theoretical framework and critically evaluate theory Skills: - Analyse a sector, specific business corporation, or function related to the specific areas of banking and finance - Find and combine suitable materials on a given subject - Write an extended and professional presented report accessible to a non-specialist audience - Interpret qualitative and quantitative data related to subject specific area - Identify and critically evaluate methodological concerns which arise from the methods or sources used - Draw inferences and conclusions from discussion of theory and evidence and make recommendation based on the analysis undertaken - Organise your time to ensure that deadlines are met Values and attitudes: - Collect data and interpret findings in a professional and ethical manner - Develop assurance, confidence, and self-belief in the ability to apply the skills and knowledge learnt on the degree HOW WILL I LEARN? One-to-one supervision by a member of academic staff, including preliminary discussion of reading materials, scrutiny of December submission and comments on draft version of final report.
