6 Roundtable Participants 2004 Global Forum--Washington 6 Chen Jian is C.K. Yen Professor of Chinese-American Relations and History at the University of Virginia, and Zijiang Distinguished Visiting Professor at East China Normal University. He received his M.A. from Fudan University and East China Normal University in 1982, and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in He was a Norwegian Nobel Institute Fellow and a U.S. Institute of Peace Senior Fellow. Among his main publications are: China's Road to the Korean War: The Making of the Sino-American Confrontation; The China Challenge in the 21st Century: Implications for US Foreign Policy; and Mao's China and the Cold War. Deng Yong is an associate professor of political science at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. His publications include three books, Promoting Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation: Perspectives from East Asia (author), In the Eyes of the Dragon: China Views the World (coeditor), and a forthcoming volume on Chinese foreign policy (co-editor). He is a guest editor of a special symposium on U.S.-China dialogue over China's international futures in Journal of Contemporary China. His papers have appeared in such academic journals as China Quarterly, Asian Survey, Harvard China Review, Pacific Affairs, Journal of Strategic Studies, Political Science Quarterly, and Washington Quarterly (forthcoming). He received his BA from Renmin University and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. Gao Zheng (James) (MA, Peking University, 1983; Ph.D., Yale, 1994) is an assistant professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland. He taught at Peking University and Christopher Newport University as assistant and associate professor. He is the author of Meeting Technology's Advance: Social Changes in China and Zimbabwe in the Railway Age (Greenwood Press, 1997), The Communist Takeover of Hangzhou: The Transformation of City and Cadres, (University of Hawaii Press, 2004), Modern China, (Historical Dictionary) (Scarecrow Press, forthcoming), and several articles on modern China, such as "Rediscovery of Western Science and Technology and the Definition of China's Foreign Policy." His major fields of interest are political and social history of Modern China. He is currently working on a book-length project on "Conflicts of Modernity: The City Rules and Rice Market Politics in Shanghai, " Ji Zhaojin is Program Coordinator of the Asia Program at Johns Hopkins University--SAIS. She is author of A History of Modern Shanghai Banking: the Rise and Decline of China's Finance Capitalism, (M.E. Sharpe, 2003). Lin Gang is Program Associate in the Woodrow Wilson Center s Asia Program. He served as President of the Association of Chinese Political Studies from 1998 to 1999, and taught at American University (fall 1999) and Johns Hopkins University (fall 2001). He has co-edited China after Jiang (Woodrow Wilson Center Press & Stanford University Press, 2003), Transition toward Post-Deng China (Singapore University Press, 2001) and Prospects for Cross-Taiwan Strait Developments (Hong Kong: Asia Sciences Press, 2000), co-authored Taiwan s Political Transition (Hong Kong: Social Sciences Press, 1997), and contributed

7 2004 Global Forum--Washington 7 numerous articles and book chapters. He has frequently traveled to mainland China and Taiwan, and participated in academic conferences and Voice of America programs. He was invited by the Chinese People s Political Consultative Conference to attend (as an observer) its 10 th annual meeting in Beijing, March His research interests include China s political development, Taiwan s domestic politics and cross-strait relations, U.S.-China relations, and democracy and democratization. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Pennsylvania State University (1997), MA in Taiwan studies from Xiamen University (1984), and BA in history from Fujian Normal University (1982). Liu Chuansheng is Minister Counselor of the Education Division at the Embassy of the People Republic of China in the United States. She received her BA and MA from Qinghua University. Su Ge is Minister Counselor of the Embassy of the People Republic of China in the United States. Previously he was Deputy Director of the Institute of the International Studies at Foreign Affairs Ministry. He received his Ph.D. from Brigham Young University. Wan Ming is an associate professor in the Department of Public and International Affairs, George Mason University. His Ph.D. was from the Government Department, Harvard University, in He held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard and was a visiting research scholar at Tsukuba University and a Luce Fellow in Asian Policy Studies at the Sigur Center for Asian Studies of George Washington University and the Woodrow Wilson Center. He has published two books: Human Rights in Chinese Foreign Relations: Defining and Defending National Interests (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2001) and Japan Between Asia and the West: Economic Power and Strategic Balance (M.E. Sharpe, 2001). He has also published in journals such as Asian Survey, Orbis, Pacific Affairs and International Studies Quarterly and in edited volumes from Harvard University Press, Roman and Littlefield, Stanford University Press, Xinhua Press and others. His current research interests include Sino-Japanese relations, human rights legalization in China, and international political economy of East Asia. Yang Daqing is Associate Professor of history at George Washington University. He received his BA from Nanjing University, MA from the University of Hawaii, and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Yang Jiechi is Ambassador of the People s Republic of China to the United States. Yuan Peng is Deputy Director of Division for American Studies of CICIR. He is now a visiting fellow of CNAPS program in the Brookings Institution. His specialty is U.S. foreign policy, U.S.-China relationship and U.S.-Taiwan relations. His most recent publications include American Think-Tanks and Their Attitudes toward China (co-editor-in-chief, 2003). Zhang Ming is Director of Research at IHS International, Virginia, previously worked at the Library of Congress and the U.S. National Defense University. In addition to numerous projects for U.S. federal departments, Zhang is the author of three books: Major Powers at a Crossroads, China s Changing Nuclear Posture, and A Triad of Another Kind: the United States, China, and Japan. In recent years, Zhang's studies have focused on the competency of China's national

8 2004 Global Forum--Washington 8 infrastructure, U.S.-China relations, and globalization, and continued to provide consulting services to U.S. departments and corporations. He received his Ph.D. from Purdue University. Zhang Shu Guang is Professor of American Foreign Relations at the University of Maryland (since 1993). He is author of Deterrence and Strategic Culture: Chinese-American Confrontations, (Cornell University Press, 1992), Mao's Military Romanticism: China and the Korean War, (University of Kansas Press, 1994), Economic Cold War: America's Embargo against China and The Sino-Soviet Alliance, (Wilson Center Press-Stanford University Press, 2001). He co-edited with Jian Chen, Chinese Communist Foreign Policy and the Cold War in Asia, : Documentary Evidence (Imprint, 1996). Zhang has also authored and co-authored four books in Chinese. Having completed his doctoral program (supervised by John Lewis Gaddis) at the Ohio University, Zhang was an Olin Foundation postdoctoral fellow in international security at Yale University in He received a Norwegian Nobel Institute fellowship in international studies for the spring of 1995 (Oslo, Norway). He was also awarded a Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Shanghai International Studies University (Shanghai, China) in In August 2003, he was appointed director of the Institute for Global Chinese Affairs at the University of Maryland. His current research is on Chinese-American confrontations over nuclear weapons from 1955 to Zhang Yiqun is First Secretary of the Education Division at the Embassy of the People Republic of China in the United States. Zhao Quansheng is Professor and Division Director of Comparative and Regional Studies at the School of International Service, and Director of the Center for Asia Studies at American University. He is also Associate-in-Research at the Fairbank Center of Harvard University, and Guest Professor of Peking University. He is author of Japanese Policymaking (Oxford, "Outstanding Academic Book" selected by Choice), Interpreting Chinese Foreign Policy (Oxford, Best Academic Book awarded by Ministry of Culture of South Korea), editor of Future Trends in East Asian International Relations, and co-editor of Politics of Divided Nations: China, Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He is Chair of the American Political Science Association s Conference Group on China, Series Editor of Comparative Perspectives in Modern Asia for Palgrave, and a member of editorial board of Journal of Strategic Studies, China Review, Hong Kong Journal of Social Sciences, and Journal of Contemporary China. He received his BA from Beijing University, MA and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, and postdoctoral research at Harvard University. He was a visiting scholar or professor at Oxford University, University of Tokyo, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, National University of Singapore, University of Stockholm, Tufts University, East- West Center, and the U.S. Institute of Peace. Zhou Qi is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Johns Hopkins University-- SAIS. Previously she was a Research Fellow at the Institute of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and professor of Fudan University. She is author of Human Rights and American Foreign Policy. She received her BA from Fudan University.
