National Schools Partnership and Night at the Museum 2 on DVD have teamed up together to bring you an exciting and action packed resource that will Bring Learning to Life in your classroom. The Bring Learning to Life project is all about taking your Key Stage 2 pupils on a journey of discovery with the help of some of the characters (historical or otherwise) from the new Night at the Museum 2 on DVD. There are eight modules in the programme, each intended to engage the minds of your pupils in different ways. We hope you enjoy taking them on this great-fun learning adventure! IN THIS PACK Plane s two lessons are: Lesson 1: Those magnificent men and their flying machines Combining history with ICT, this lesson gives pupils the chance to use the internet to research a topic. In this case, the topic is the famous Wright Brothers. Children will be creating an interesting PowerPoint presentation from their findings. Lesson 2: Perfecting the paper plane! A science Sc3 and design technology lesson, in which your pupils will come to understand how paper planes are designed and what makes them fly well. OUT ON DVD & BLU-RAY 9TH NOV 1

This lesson is all about the world-famous Wright brothers, the pioneers of flight! Your pupils will be surfing the Net to research the Wright brothers lives and then, in part two of the lesson, they ll be creating an interesting PowerPoint presentation with the information they have found. LEARNING OUTCOME Part 1: How to use the internet effectively to research a topic Part 2: How to create an interesting PowerPoint presentation CURRICULUM LINKS History The Wright Brothers ICT Creating PowerPoint presentations/research YOU WILL NEED Plane Lesson Plan 1 Who were the Wright brothers? PowerPoint presentation (provided) The Wright brothers questionnaire handout STARTER Show the children this video clip of the Wright Brothers: Launch the PowerPoint presentation file provided to introduce the topic and outline the tasks involved in the lesson. Ask the children what they would like to find out about the history of aviation and the Wright brothers. ACTIVITIES Part 1: In pairs, pupils should record their top 5 questions and share them with the class. Create a list of their questions on page 2 of your interactive whiteboard file. Next, click to page three of the Powerpoint presentation, which gives pointers to useful Powerpoint Presentations and lists some questions children can focus their research on. Part 2: When they ve completed their research, split the children into small groups and ask them to produce a PowerPoint presentation, using all the features of the software they know, to present their findings in the most fun and interesting way they can. PLENARY Show everyone s presentations. How could they be improved? Have they used animation and sound etc? 2

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS AND THE WORLD S FIRST FLIGHT Using the Internet, see if you can find the answers to the following questions: 1. When was the Wright brothers first flight? 2. When and where were the Wright brothers born? 3. What did they do before they became interested in aeroplanes? 4. Which beach did they use to do their flights? 5. What was the first powered plane called and how did it work? 6. How was the first flight powered? 7. How far was the first powered flight? 8. For how long was it in the air? 9. In 1909 the Wright brothers started a business. What was it called? 10. When did Wilbur die? And from what disease?

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS AND THE WORLD S FIRST FLIGHT ANSWERS Using the Internet, see if you can find the answers to the following questions: 1. When was the Wright brothers first flight? When and where were the Wright brothers born? Dayton, Ohio and Milville, Indiana 3. What did they do before they became interested in aeroplanes? inventing, designing and building things 4. How did they become interested in inventing, designing and building things? Kitty Hawk 5. What was the first unpowered plane called and how did it work? Wright Flyer 6. How was the first flight powered? Propeller driven 7. How far was the first powered flight? 120 feet 8. For how long was it in the air? 12 seconds 9. In 1909 the Wright brothers started a business. What was it called? Bicycle Shop, Wright Cycle 10. When did Wilbur die? And from what disease? 1912, Typhoid

In this lesson, the children will be looking at three different paper plane designs, before they settle down to designing their own! Once they ve constructed their planes, they ll be testing and modifying them to see if they can find ways to make them travel further. LEARNING OUTCOME Understanding the design of paper planes and what makes them fly well. CURRICULUM LINKS Science Sc3 Materials and their properties; grouping and classifying materials. Design technology Developing, planning and communicating ideas 1b, 1c, 1d Working with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products, 2a 2d Evaluating processes and products 3a, 3b Knowledge and understanding of materials and components 4a YOU WILL NEED Paper, pencils, rulers and rubbers Sellotape Paperclips Three paper-plane templates (provided) Internet access STARTER Show the children this video clip about making a rapier paper plane: Split the children into small groups and give each a copy of the plane templates (there are three, each with a different level of difficulty). 3

ACTIVITIES In their groups, the children should work together to plan what they are going to make. Limit the materials they re allowed to use just paper, Sellotape and paperclips. Working as a team, they should design, draw out and label their own paper plane. Then, they should make up their design and test it. How far did it travel? Did it maintain its shape? How could it be improved? PLENARY Each group to demonstrate their plane to the rest of the class. Can other groups suggest modifications that could be made to improve flight? Will they work outdoors as well as indoors? 4

BULLDOG The Bulldog has a compact nose section that makes it very stable by keeping the center of gravity forward. It flies well indoors or in very light breezes outdoors. Orient the template with the UP arrow at the top of the page. Then, flip the paper over onto its backside, so that you cannot see any of the fold lines. Fold the top right corner down and to the left until fold line 1 appears and crease along the dotted line. Unfold the fold you just created. BULLDOG 1

Repeat the procedure above by folding the top left corner down and to the right. Make a crease along fold line 2. Unfold the fold you just created.. This step is a bit tricky. Lift the left and right edges of the paper and push them toward each other while folding the top triangle onto the bottom one. Make a crease along fold lines 3 so that you end up with the shape below. This is the shape you should have after completing the step above. Fold the nose down until fold line 4 appears and make a crease along the dotted line.. BULLDOG 2

Fold the left and right flaps in and crease along fold lines 5. Tuck these flaps into the pockets in the nose. Fold the right half of the plane over onto the left half and crease along fold line 6 so that the outside edges of the wings line up. Fold the wings down along fold lines 7 and the winglets up along fold lines 8. Add wing dihedral by tilting the wings up slightly away from the fuselage. The wings will have a slight V shape when viewed from the front. You are ready to fly! BULLDOG 3

BULLDOG 4

RAPTOR This plane is an excellent outdoor glider. Launch straight up and it will glide down in big lazy circles. Adjust the elevator on the back edge of the wing to perfect the flight characteristics. Orient the template so that the UP arrow is at the top of the page. Then flip the paper over so that none of the fold lines are showing. Fold the top right and top left corners in until fold lines 1 appear and crease along the dotted line. Fold the nose down toward you and crease along fold line 2. RAPTOR 1

Fold the nose down toward you again and crease along fold line 3. Fold the top edge down toward you again and crease along fold line 4. Flip the plane over and fold the right half over the left half along fold line 5 so that the outside edges of the wings line up.. Flip the wings down along fold lines 6 and the winglets up along fold lines 7. Cut twp slits along the back edges of both wings for elevator adjustment. Add wing dihedral by tilting the wings up slightly away from the fuselage. The wings will have a slight V shape when viewed from the front. You are ready to fly! RAPTOR 2

RAPTOR 3

DELTA This plane flies fast and straight. It is easy to fold and a great all around flier. Add some up elevator if necessary to produce stable flights. Orient the template so that the UP arrow is at the top of the page. Then flip the paper over so that none of the fold lines are showing. Fold the top left corner down toward you until fold line 1 becomes visible. Crease along the dotted line and repeat with the top right corner. Fold the left side over again and crease along fold line 2. Repeat with the right side. DELTA 1

Fold the nose down and toward you along fold line 3. Fold the right half of the plane over the left half along fold line 4 so that the outside edges of the wings line up. Fold the wings down along fold lines 5 and the winglets up along fold lines 6. Add wing dihedral by tilting the wings up slightly away from the fuselage. The wings will have a slight V shape when viewed from the front. You are ready to fly! DELTA 2
