Love yourself CHALLENGE Body Image and Self-Esteem Activities BROWNIES

Body Image and Self-Esteem Activities for Brownies The GGC/NEDIC Love Yourself Challenge is designed to build and encourage healthy self-esteem and positive body image among girls. This document includes numerous activities which explore aspects of body image, self-esteem and health and nutrition. Each is adaptable through the use of appropriate props and language. You can modify or adjust the activities to suit your Unit s needs, size and abilities. This Challenge can be completed in one meeting, throughout several meetings or even at camp. It is strongly recommended that Guiders review the document GGC/NEDIC Love Yourself Challenge: Backgrounder on body image and self-esteem for Brownie Guiders before beginning the activities with the girls. To complete the NEDIC Challenge, Brownies and their Guiders should work together to choose and complete one activity from each section: Body image Self-esteem Health and nutrition You can do a Brownie Brainstorm and ask the girls what kinds of activities they would like to do. Record all their thoughts and look through the Challenge activities to see which ones most reflect their interests. This allows the Brownies to be involved in the process from the very beginning and ensures that girls are being engaged in a meaningful way. Don t forget to look closely at the program book you may have achieved more than expected! Some of the activities could count towards other core program work. Once you have completed the Challenge you can buy the Challenge crest at your Guiding store or online and present it to your Brownies. 2 Brownies Body Image & Self-Esteem Activities

Body image activities 1. Explore similarities and differences: encourages a respect for others while understanding that differences between individuals are something to celebrate. Gather miscellaneous items (at least twice as many as there are girls in the Unit). There should be multiples of some of the items. Examples of items can be empty salt and pepper shakers, coloured pens or markers, balls of various sizes and colours, plastic animals, etc. Ask each girl to choose one item that appeals to her and to take it back to her seat. Ask each girl to tell the group what appealed to her about the item. If more than one girl has the same item, ask each in turn to explain the attraction of the item. Where there are different explanations, comment on how there are many different reasons to like something and we may each value the same thing for different reasons. Where the girls like the same feature of the item, comment on how they liked the identical thing. This exercise is to help talk about differences and similarities as neutral or positive and to encourage learning that we are not all the same but we are all worthy. 2. Positive trait game: encourages girls to brainstorm positive traits that are reflective of themselves and their peers. Flip chart and makers Have the girls suggest positive traits about themselves and the other girls around them using each letter of the alphabet. The trait needs to match up with each letter in the alphabet. For example; A could stand for Awesome friend, B could stand for Beautiful smile, etc. Ask the girls to continue until each letter of the alphabet has a positive trait listed. Ask them to shout out whatever comes to mind. Using a large flip chart, have a Guider or guest helper write down the girls answers. 3. Body pride pledge: reminds girls that there are lots of things about themselves to love and celebrate. 3 Brownies Body Image & Self-Esteem Activities

One piece of 8x10 inch paper for each girl in the Unit Unit s craft supplies With the help of your local Guide Unit, have the girls write down on a piece of paper three personal traits they like about themselves. For example, I think I am funny, I like my smile, I m a great soccer player, I am helpful. Finish each pledge with I am beautiful. Have each girl decorate their Body Pride Pledge. Encourage girls to take it home and hang it up in their room so they can be reminded everyday of how special they are. 4. Awesome aliens: uses creativity to reinforce the idea that it s cool to be different. A variety of craft supplies What to do Using your Unit s craft supplies, have each girl draw and create her own alien. She can make it look any way she wants three eyes, purple teeth, funny feet, etc. Ask the girls to volunteer to present her alien to the Unit and describe how it looks. Celebrate the differences between each girl s creations! 5. Books: builds vocabulary and strengthens use of language while introducing a new concept. A selection of books A healthy snack Several books appropriate for Brownies are listed in the Backgrounder on body image and self-esteem for Brownie Guiders. This activity would be a great way to get your local Guide Unit involved. You could break the girls up into small groups and have one Guide read the story and another Guide provoke discussion around the topic of healthy body image. Alternatively, some of these books could be recommended to parents to share with their daughters. 4 Brownies Body Image & Self-Esteem Activities

Self-esteem activities 1. Pump up the put-ups!: encourages positive self reflection. Tape One piece of 8x10 paper for each girl Markers Music Tape a piece of paper on each girl s back. Give each girl a marker (be sure it won t leak through the paper). Ask the girls to go around and write a positive word on every other girl s back. Note: it is important that the girls write on EVERY girl s back so no one is left out. The positive word will reflect a character trait or quality that represents or describes the girl. For example: funny, smart, caring, etc. Once they are finished writing on each other s backs have them take off their sheet of paper and they can read all the positive words their Brownie friends wrote about them. Note: play some fun music while doing this activity to get the Unit excited and infuse the room with positive energy. 2. Find the match: reinforces the importance of focusing on positive character traits and behaviours rather than physical attributes recipe cards GGC clip art aspx?searchparam=clip art Brainstorm 10 to 15 positive character traits or behaviors. For example, helpful, caring, good athlete, creative, etc. Using recipe cards write each word on two cards. You could also add matching images of girls onto the cards (see the link above for GGC clipart). If you have a large Unit, break the girls up into smaller groups. Give each group one pack of cards. Ask them to place the cards face down so the word or image is not showing. Give each girl a chance to find the match. She can flip one card over and then a second. If she doesn t find the match then she flips both cards back over and it s the next girl s turn. The structure of the game mimics the game Memory. End with a dance party to congratulate each group for finding all the pairs! 5 Brownies Body Image & Self-Esteem Activities

3. Create family portraits: promotes positive self-esteem while encouraging girls to explore similar familial traits; infuses a sense of pride. NOTE: please be sensitive when using this activity. There could be personal familial circumstances such as adoption or blended-family that make a girl and her family uncomfortable. Have the girls bring in various family photos What to do Ask the girls to organize their photographs into groups where each group has a similar feature; e.g. gender; eye colour; height; size, etc. Ask each girl to briefly talk about her own similarities and differences to her family members. Guide the discussion to how our features are genetically inherited, including size and height. Note: you may have to explain what genetically means, i.e. traits are passed on from your parents and grandparents. Mention that there is a small role in how the environment and our lifestyles affect our inherited traits. Note that when you grow up, you might look different as an adult then you do right now. For example, if you have blonde hair now you may have brown hair when you grow up. It s a surprise what you might look like in the future! This exercise helps girls recognize where their physical traits come from, that they are not something you choose or can change at will. Talk about differences and similarities as neutral or positive and encourage learning that we are not all the same but we are all worthy. Ultimately, the girls should be able to see that all individuals belong to the same family: the human family. The Guider may want to extend this exercise into looking at non-physical characteristics too, such as personalities, likes and dislikes. 4. Focus on the good stuff: Allows the girls a safe space to express and reflect the positive elements of her life. Prior to the meeting, trace a basic outline of a butterfly on a sheet of paper. Photocopy the butterfly template, making sure you have one copy for every girl in your Unit. Unit s craft supplies This is a great opportunity to involve your local Guide Unit. Ask each girl to think of a few positive elements that she enjoys about her life. This could be her friends, her family, her pet, a Guiding activity, etc. Let her choose as many or as few as she feels she would like to share. The only rule to follow is that it has to be positive. With the help of an older buddy, the girl should write down her positive thoughts inside the butterfly. Once the writing is finished give her an opportunity to colour and decorate the butterfly s wings. 6 Brownies Body Image & Self-Esteem Activities

Health and nutrition activities 1. Create a collage that celebrates healthy bodies: highlights positive influential images while reinforcing the importance of a healthy body. Pictures from newspapers, magazines and other sources Unit s craft supplies Ask each girl to bring in a photo of herself 7 Brownies Body Image & Self-Esteem Activities

have the girls create a collage that celebrates physical differences, health and nutrition and shows how healthy bodies come in many different shapes, sizes, etc. Encourage girls to add pictures of people participating in physical activities as well as pictures of healthy foods. Have the girl include a picture of herself. This will reinforce that they have a healthy body! 2. Invite an expert: creates a safe space while providing information from an expert. Not to mention, it is always exciting to invite a guest speaker! Invite a guest speaker from your local health Unit to speak about the importance of making healthy food choices and proper nutrition. 3. Get active: provides an opportunity to infuse physical activity A safe space to run around Use this time to simply be active and have fun! Play an active game that interests the girls in the Unit. After you have finished save a few minutes and have a brief discussion on the importance of living an active life. 4. Cook up a storm: teaches the importance of healthy eating and provides girls with nutritious options. Before completing this activity, make sure you ask all parents if there are any food allergies you should be aware of. Accessible kitchen or appropriate cooking space All ingredients and cooking utensils necessary to create your dish This is a great opportunity to involve your local Guide Unit Prior to the meeting conduct a Brownie Brainstorm and make a list of healthy snacks they would like to make together. Break the girls up into smaller groups. Make a list of which group will be responsible for making which snack as well as bringing the ingredients. The dishes could range from fruits smoothies, banana bread, trail mix, mini-veggie pizzas, etc. With the help of a Guider or volunteer helper set up stations and make your healthy snacks. Let the girls be creative with their food presentation. 8 Brownies Body Image & Self-Esteem Activities

Let the girls taste and explore each other s creations. While eating, have a group discussion about why they think it is important to eat nutritious meals and snacks and share with them any points they might have left out. Note: Don t forget the importance of hand washing. Please review Girl Guides of Canada s Safe Guide document located on Member Zone to ensure that all safety precautions are taken. 5. Books: Builds vocabulary and strengthens use of language while introducing a new concept. A selection of books A healthy snack Several books appropriate for Brownies are listed in the Backgrounder on body image and self-esteem for Brownies Guiders. This activity would be a great way to get your local Guide Unit involved. You could break the girls up into small groups and have one Guide read the story and another Guide provoke discussion around the topic of healthy body image.
