1 A nightly reading homework folder system Created by Amanda Byrnes

2 Shopping List Class set of red 3-pronged folders with pockets 1 piece of cardstock (any color) 2 baskets to hold folders (See Basket Labels page) 2x4 printer labels (type in student names, include cute Dr. Seuss or reading clipart on each label, and stick on front of each folder) Stick glue or rubber cement Class set of printer paper in the following colors: o Blue (for RED Informational sheet; hole punch and insert into folder) o (for RED Book Log sheets; hole punch and insert behind blue informational page) o Red (for RED Comprehension Questions page; glue on back of each folder) Motivational stickers, bookmarks, and window cling below from

3 Basket Labels Print this page on cardstock, laminate, and cut around edges. Ear label: Attach to basket where students will turn in folders Book label: Attach to a different basket where you will put folders/books you have already had a student read to you so you know you need to insert a new book for that child! Please listen to me read my RED book! I d like a new RED book, please!

4 Students need to be able to read when they leave Kindergarten. The RED (Read Every Day) Folder is a part of your child s nightly reading homework. Students should aim to read 1-2 books/week. Reading more is even better!! Each night, please: Have your child read the book I ve inserted into his/her folder to you. They will be practicing multiple reading skills, specifically decoding and sight word skills. o Please don t let your child struggle over words. Give him/her a chance, but if it is too difficult, tell him/her the word. Ask your child 3-4 applicable comprehension questions on the back of the folder. When your child is able to read the book very well, write the book title, date, and your signature in the log. o If your child needs a few extra days of practice with a book, please do not send it back. Keep it at home in the folder and have him/her practice it with you. Return the book to school in your child s RED Folder. After the book is returned to school, I will listen to your child read it and put a new book in the folder. Important Notes If your child is really struggling with or is flying through a book I have sent, please return it with a note on the log page. I will gladly send another that is less difficult or more challenging, depending on the situation! RED books belong to our school. Please teach your child the appropriate way to treat books and school property! I am eager for you to share your child s excitement as all of his/her skills begin to come together throughout the year, and he/she is able to read to you! Happy Reading! $

What time of day does the story take place? Who are the characters in the story? Is there a problem in the story? If so, what is the problem? What is the solution to the problem? Can you think of another solution? What happens at the beginning, middle, and end of the story? Did you like this story? Why or why not? Can you think of a different ending for the story? What would you do if you were in the story? Would you recommend this story to a friend? Why or why not?
