Strand: Number Sense Understanding Questions Possible Technology Product/Outcome Mathematical terminology and symbols are used in precise ways. All numbers have a distinct position on the real number line. Why is it important to use precise mathematical vocabulary and symbols? How does mathematical terminology relate to common English words? What is the relationship between the position of a number on the number line and the value of the number? How can we use a number line to solve problems? Use KidPix to make a number book. Use Kidspiration to count symbols. Use Millie s Math House to recognize and read the numbers Use Millie s Math House, Build A Bug, to understand that numbers represent a certain quantity of objects regardless of what the objects are or how they are arranged. Use Mighty Math Zoo Zillions to locate numbers on number line, count backward and forward using a number line, and use the number line to add and subtract. 1
The results of an operation depend on the types of numbers involved. How does identifying the types of numbers involved in an operation assist in determining the reasonableness of the result? Estimation is a logical, useful tool. How can estimation be used to determine the reasonableness of an answer? When is estimation the best strategy? Use KidPix to draw a number story. Use the digital camera to make a counting book. Use Kidspiration to tell a simple addition or subtraction story. Use Millie s Mouse House, What s My Number, to recognize and read number sentences. Use ClarisWorks for Kids, math templates, to illustrate number sentences. Use Count Us In website for fun number games. in/default.htm 2
Strand: Algebra (Patterns & Functions) Many patterns exist in What are number patterns and mathematics. why are they useful? How can we find number or picture patterns? Where do patterns exist in the physical world? Use Sammy s Science House to sort and classify objects according to their attributes. Use Kidspiration or KidPix to make series of patterns which students complete. Use Kidspiration SuperGrouper to sort and classify. Use Millie s Math House, Bing and Bong to create and complete patterns. Use Mighty Math Carnival Countdown to sort and classify objects with one or more attributes. Use Thinkin Things to create and solve patterns. 3
Strand: Geometry and Measurement Mathematical terminology and Why is it important to use symbols for geometry and precise mathematical vocabulary measurement are used in precise and symbols? ways. How does mathematical terminology relate to common English words? Different types of measurements are required depending on the situation or objects involved. How do we use different types of measurements? Make a shape slideshow using KidPix. Use Kidspiration SuperGrouper to match geometric shapes with real life objects. Use Millie s Math House Little, Middle, Big to explore meanings of words related to measurement. Use Mighty Math Carnival Countdown to recognize, identify, and differentiate geometric shapes. Use Trudy s Time and Place to develop an understanding of the units used to measure time. The characteristics and properties of geometric figures and real-life objects can be used to solve problems. What are the unique characteristics associated with individual geometric figures? Use TERC Shapes, to combine basic shapes to make designs and patterns. Use Millie s Math House, Mouse House to combine basic shapes to make designs. 4
Strand: Data, Statistics and Probability There are a variety of ways to How can we use data to represent, model, and analyze data interpret events in the physical and to predict future events. world and in our society? Use The Graph Club to record data in bar graphs and pictographs. Use The Graph Club to explain information in a simple graph. 5
