1 Dear OSR Students, Congratulations on your admittance to the Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership Program at BGI. Below is a reading list for you to complete before coming to the first session of the program at Pilgrim Firs on September 30th. Now that you have the reading list: 1. Please DO NOT order the books on the list. We are mailing the books on this reading list to you now. o OSR provides the books you will need for the program directly to you. The supplemental materials fees that you pay each quarter covers the cost your books. o Please expect to see packages at your home address shortly. The packages will be delivered by US Postal Mail or UPS and will either come directly from the OSR Program or Amazon. 2. Please DO NOT research the electronic readings available on the Channel. o As soon as you complete your online orientation with Sarah Miller, Director of Information Technology, you ll be able to access BGI s online learning portal, the Channel. o All the electronic readings are available on the channel for you to download. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the reading list. Regards, -- Leslie Chamberlain OSR Program Administrator leslie.chamberlain@bgi.edu home office
2 This set of articles, chapters, videos and poems is our way of presenting to you what we consider the fundamental/defining themes and dimensions of the learning journey of OSR 20. Our intention is to start building a common ground and a common language to talk about human systems, change, learning, and design. We suggest you go through the resources in the order presented but you may read in whatever order you choose. You are not expected to memorize information from the readings; instead we invite you to: Pay attention to what is provoked in you: What conversations start to unfold in you? What are your gut reactions to the core propositions? How are you touched in your heart and spirit? What do you feel moved to do or not do? Consider the core concepts being presented against your personal experiences of living inside organizations. What peaks your curiosity, and what bumps against your own previous knowledge? Observe how you are stretched in your conceptions of what it means to be alive, to be part of a human system, and what it might take to transform that system. If you seek to improve the health of a human system, what relationship will you need to have with yourself and with the system? Discover the network of interconnections in what might seem at first glance a random set of materials. What is the whole that you experience as you engage with all of the material to prepare yourself to enter the OSR learning experience? Notice how you learn as you engage with each article, chapter, poem, or video. What does it mean to learn? Do you learn when you agree with something; when something strikes you as different or novel; when you disagree with something; when you do not understand something? After noticing each of these reactions, what do you do next? How do you reflect on what has provoked you? How do you capture and apply your learning? Rest assured that this is a not a typical amount of reading for each month! The greater-than-average amount of preparation helps us form and learn together as we convene for the first time. Enjoy!
