2 Does this study fit me? In the Game design course we will teach you about the graphical and design part of games, but also give you an insight in the technical workings of a game. If you are considering this course, and what to be sure whether or not this course is suited for you, ask yourself the following: - Do I have some experience with drawing (either manually or digitally) - Did I explore the creation of games. E.g. modified an existing game (created a mod), created your own levels, created your own games - Do I have some experience with 3d software like Maya, 3dsMax, Blender, or other tools - You have some experience with 3d engines like unity3d, unreal, cryengine, or others - You like storytelling, make up your own stories or characters - You have some experience with digital Audio or play an instrument - Other interest which involve the creation of things, perhaps with physical materials (clay or foam or any other material - You have an interest in photography - You have an interest for technical subjects like basic programming, math or electronics - You have a portfolio you can show If you can answer the majority of these questions with yes you are probably a suited candidate for these studies. If the answer is no, don t hesitate and get going to gain some experience! Details curriculum Projects: During projects, students from game design and game engineering work together to create an actual game. A project is always full time, during a time span of 2 weeks, increasing in duration and credits over the first 2 years. (this is the reason the amount of courses will decline during the first 2 years as you might have noticed in the table above) In these projects you use different game engines, planning tools, different types of software and gadgets (occulus rift for example) in order to create a working game. Eventually you ll have actual clients for whom you ll have to create a game. All projects ask you to apply the knowledge you ve gained in the previous quarters. Courses: All courses consist of lectures and practical hours, in order to practice the theory right away. The generic courses are all 3 ects (credits) and will stop after the first 2 years, since you focus on your own specialization from there on.
3 Year 1 Quarter 1 2d game assets: This is the basic introduction in how to use tools (Adobe Photoshop) and what (technical) requirements you ll have to meet in order to create optimized game assets. 2d animation: In 2d animation you ll learn the essentials of animation and how to prepare your assets in order to get them into the game you ll make in project 2d platformer On games: In this course you ll learn the essentials of how games work, what makes them appealing and what game design is all about. Team up: Here you will learn the basics of teamwork and the scrum planning method Year 1 Quarter 2 Q2: Game scripting: as a creative student you ll learn the basics of LUA script, in order to be able to script basic gameplay Concept art: Here you ll draw both manually and digital (using a tablet) Contents are human anatomy and composition Game design MDA: This course concerns a more in-depth look into game design and the Mechanics Dynamics Aesthetics principal Communication: You can create a game, but can you sell the game? It all starts with a decent presentation and good communication Year 1 Quarter 3 3d modelling: Using Autodesk Maya, you ll learn to model 3d objects so they can be used in 3d engines Unity 3d: This is the game engine we ll be working with mostly during the first 2 years. Try it out for free on ww.unity3d.com Game interaction: What makes a game intuitive, how do you create a decent feedback system. That s what you ll learn in this course Game audio: Here you ll learn the basic use of game audio, the different audio formats and how to apply them in your games. Year 1 Quarter 4 3d animation: How to create animations in games that blend from one into the other whilst playing your game? Next to that, get familiar with the basics of sculpting in Autodesk Mudbox Level design: Level design is applied game design. You ll learn the do s and don ts for the creation of levels Rendering Pipeline: Understanding what hardware you use, and which options and limitations they have, you can optimize your game for the different platforms available.
4 Year 2 Quarter 1 3d rigging: in this course you ll create a character in 2d, build it in 3d, and provide it with a skeletal structure in order to be able to animate it. In game audio mixing: How do you recognize in a game that a certain event is happening? You might hear the music or sound effects change. How to do this gradually and how to set his up in an engine is what you ll learn here. Game economics: What is the economy of your game, how do you set it up and balance it out so the game is playable. Year 2 Quarter 2 Cinematics: You will learn how to tell a story, how to set up an interesting character and how to adjust your composition in a way that you can provide your audience with the optimal experience. Procedural art: Have you ever wondered how many items there are in your game, and how much time it would take the level designer to place everything by hand? Here we ll teach you several scripts in order to automate this. Team development: Take a look at your role in the team, and how to optimize your team so it provides you with the best result possible Year 2 Quarter 3 3d sculpting: Here you ll learn how to create a high polygonal creature in Z-brush Creativity: In this course you ll learn the do s and don ts of creative Idea generation, in order to come up with to most unique games! In business: Know how to sell your game, what to think of, which platforms, which stores, the right advertisement etc. Year 2 Quarter 4 Graduation plan: Here you ll take a look into you (near) future to determine where you want to go during the next 2 years of your study and beyond Year 3 Quarter 1-4 Internship: You ll have to find an internship in which you work in a game company for about 5 months, experiencing production pipeline and how the industry works. Specialization: You will specialize in 2 different subjects, in which you do research about topics of your choice. This can be a certain workflow, a design style, or anything you find interesting and is of interest for the game industry Year 4 Quarter 1-4 Minor: In the minor you can go more in-depth, or broaden your knowledge. You can for example, get more acquainted with the programming courses, or pick any of the minors offered throughout The netherlands Graduation: In an existing company you will graduate with a professional product and a research document, showing that you have mastered all (and more) of these subjects
