1 Job Description JOB TITLE: Lead Pharmacy Technician - Pharmacy Stores and Logistic Services DIVISIONAL/DEPARTMENT: Clinical Support, Pharmacy GRADE: Band 5 REPORTS TO: ACCOUNTABLE TO: Chief Technician - Assistant Services Manager Chief Pharmacist JOB SUMMARY To manage the day to day work of the Technicians and Assistant Technical Officers in the provision of the topping up service and other basic stores functions, to ensure a timely, accurate and safe service to all users, liaising with other Lead Technicians, where appropriate in all matters relating to aspects of the Pharmacy Store and its services. To provide training and assessment of Pharmacy staff to ensure the provision of high quality service and to be involved in developing and maintaining a well trained and motivated team. To support the Chief Technician responsible for stores and Logistic services in ensuring that hospital and internal Pharmacy policies and procedures are followed and the supply to pharmaceutical items to internal and external customers meet agreed deadlines. 2 1. To manage the day to day provision of Stores Services to the wards and departments of the hospital. To ensure that pharmaceutical items are checked and supplied to internal and external customers to meet agreed deadlines. 2. To deputise for the Chief Technician (Assistant Services Manager), ensuring the day to day service provision is maintained during short term absence. 3. To organise, co-ordinate and oversee the duties performed by the Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs) and Pharmacy Technicians in the Stores area to ensure a high quality service is maintained. 4. Manage the ordering of sundry items required for use within Pharmacy Stores and ensure any that are used within the top-up services are charged to the relevant cost centres. 5. Assist in the co-ordination of annual leave in the department to ensure adequate service levels. 6. To undertake return to work interviews for the Stores areas sporadic sickness management for staff in accordance with the Trusts and Departmental sickness monitoring policy. 7. To be involved in the recruitment and selection of Pharmacy Stores staff, at all grades. 8. Assist the Chief Technician in the management of the unlicensed products, ensuring appropriate stock holding and the documentation ate maintained. 9. To assist with the management of the ward stock top up service and also participating, when required, to designated areas as necessary, ensuring when working in areas where patients are being treated that patient confidentiality is maintained. 10. To liaise with the Chief Technician Procurement, Chief Technician Assistant Services Manager and Pharmacy Finance staff on any drug shortages and supply problems, assessing the impact on services users with a view to supplying alternative products. 11. To be a link between Governance and Pharmacy Stores for Health and Safety issues. 12. Assist in the provision of induction training for new staff, the competency and validation programmes, including assessments for the NVQ Level 2 and the continuing education for all staff directly working within or on rotation through the Stores area to meet the Trust s Clinical Governance Standards. To work closely with the training team to ensure training needs of staff are communicated, delivered, are carried out promptly and a record made. 13. Participate in extended delegated checking duties in accordance with departmental policies to ensure that the correct medicines are issued from the Pharmacy Store and to keep the error rate within the Pharmacy Standard. 14. Perform final accuracy checking of items dispensed by other members of staff in accordance with agreed protocols to met departmental standards. 15. To participate in the departmental appraisal scheme (IPR) and to perform appraisal interviews with all grades of staff to include ATOs, technicians, portering staff and storekeeping staff in order to monitor performance and accept feedback from members of staff. 16. Assist the Chief Technician in the preparation and implementation of procedures to ensure uniform systems of working are in place where standards and quality are maintained. 17. Contribute to departmental planning and development of services, and to undertake project work as required. 18. Assist in the supervision of the repacking and over-labelling of certain drugs according to agreed procedures 19. To assist in re-cycling of unwanted pharmaceutical products from wards and departments to help ensure safe and effective disposal of waste and the safe return of stock to various cost centres. There is some exposure to hazards when items are not disposed of at ward or department level

3 following the Trust Procedures, including unsheathed needles, broken glass, mercury and body fluid samples. 20. To participate in the programme of regular review of ward and departmental stock lists and the checking of stock in areas that do not receive a topping up service in order to reduce waste and ensure appropriate supply of medicines. 21. Assist on a day to day basis in error monitoring, recording and feed back to the staff in the Stores areas in order to reduce risks within the Pharmacy Stores and on wards and departments. 22. To participate in departmental stock control within the Distribution area in order to ensure effective stock levels are maintained and discrepancies in a timely manner in liaison with the Pharmacy Information Technology and Pharmacy Business Teams. 23. To assist the Chief Technician procurement and the Pharmacist in charge of product recalls in informing the relevant stock holding areas, with the drawing affected products and supplying with replacement stock. 24. To be a key holder, locking up when required, maintaining security within the Pharmacy stores area at all times. 25. To regularly attend to contribute to team meetings and in the absence of the Chief Technician attend were appropriate meetings that require input from the Stores areas. 26. To deal with telephone and face-to-face enquiries and or complaints from a wide range of staff groups, resolving where possible and referring appropriate queries to relevant members of the pharmacy team 27. To ensure that all drug transactions are entered accurately and timely onto the pharmacy computer system so that stock discrepancies are kept to a minimum. 28. Participate in the creation, reporting and monitoring of workload data to support our key performance indicators etc. Generating action plans and supporting teams to complete the objectives developed, as necessary. 29. To take responsibility for personal continued professional development. 30. Duties of the post within the Pharmacy Store are performed in an area of restricted space with variable temperatures depending on the weather conditions. There is a requirement for a significant amount of bending, stretching, lifting and handling in the day to day duties. 31. Participate in the departmental weekends, Bank Holiday working and late duty rota as required. In addition the post holder may need to participate in a system of flexible shifts. 32. Any other duties which may be requested by the Chief Technician (Assistant Services Manager) following consultation. General Policies Procedures and Practices To comply with all Trust policies, procedures and practices and to be responsible for keeping up to date with any changes to these. WORKING CONDITIONS Duties of the post within the Pharmacy Store are performed in an area of restricted space with variable temperatures depending on the weather conditions. There is a requirement for a significant amount of bending, stretching, lifting and handling in the day to day duties. There is some exposure to hazards when items are not disposed of at ward or department level following the Trust Procedures, including unsheathed needles, broken glass, mercury and body fluid samples Physical Effort: During a shift the post holder will frequently be required to exert physical effort and be required for periods of time to use IT equipment and attend staff meetings. When in the stores and distribution areas standing for long periods of time may occur. There may also be occasions where the post holder is expected to exert moderate physical effort (e.g. pushing trolleys between pharmacy areas). Lifting, bending and stretching will be required frequently on a daily basis. There will be face to face contact with healthcare professionals in this role which occasionally may be stressful and difficult. Mental Effort: During a shift the post holder may experience unpredictable workload with some extremely busy periods with lots of background noise/distractions. Constant concentration is required for accurate work. ACCESS TO PATIENTS

5 In undertaking the duties outlined above the post holder will have access to patients. This means that the post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and all post holders must disclose any criminal conviction including those considered as spend under the Act. Post holders appointed to this will be required to consent to a check through the Criminal Records Bureau. REGISTERED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS All persons appointed to the post are required to hold registration with their appropriate professional Regulatory Body and comply with their professional code of conduct.
