1 ASTHMA DISCHARGE PLAN Information Leaflet Your Health. Our Priority.

2 Page 2 of 6 Asthma When a child with asthma comes into contact with something that irritates their airways (an asthma trigger) the muscles around the walls of the airways tighten The airways become narrower and the lining of the airways become inflamed and start to swell, sometimes sticky mucus or phlegm builds up and can further narrow the airways These reactions cause the airways to become narrower and irritated - making it difficult to breath and leading to symptoms of asthma. What causes asthma It is difficult to say for sure what causes asthma but your child is more likely to develop asthma if he/she has a family history of asthma, eczema or allergies, environmental factor also have an influence over the likelihood of your child developing asthma. Symptoms of asthma The usual symptoms of asthma are: coughing wheezing shortness of breath tightness in the chest Most people with asthma have symptoms that are controllable. By following a written personal asthma action plan, you should be able to gain better control of your asthma and manage your symptoms. The plan helps you to manage your own asthma by enabling you to: Recognise when your asthma is getting worse or better Change the amounts of medicine you take as agreed with your doctor or asthma nurse Most importantly, it's really helpful to learn what to do in an asthma attack, so you're always prepared to deal with it Medications to take at home Oral Steroids- Prednisolone Dose required..
