Policy Manual Come, let us tell of the Lord s greatness; let us exalt his name together. Psalm 34:3 Taylortown Community Church 2656 Taylortown Rd. Shelby, OH (419)

Members will discover that they CAN enthusiastically serve the Lord with music. Members who are wholly committed to being lead worshipers for Christ will desire to serve by leading others into worshiping God with them. ( Romans 12:11, Galatians 5:13) Members of the Praise Team will create a safe environment to worship God freely. It is scriptural to clap, lift up hands, lift up heads, dance, sing, be still, and close eyes but members must be considerate of the people around us. We must worship as ONE while edifying all those around us; believers and not. Members of the Praise Team will be an example of community and an example of other facets of worship such as prayer, humility, praises, encouragement, exhortation, giving, and love. The group must show unity as a body and demonstrate a visible love and respect for the people they are working with. The group must look at each person as Christ sees each person in the band; as valuable. All members of the group will accept the responsibility of being an example of practicing a life of worship, inside and outside of time spent with the group. Mission & Core Values Our mission is to use our gifts to lead the congregation into worship. Members will use their musical talents as one way to exalt God in their lives. Vocalists, Instrumentals, and Technical members of the Praise Team are of equal importance. Each member offers their gifts to glorify God and strengthen the team as a whole. One of our goals as a team will be to focus on God and on leading His people into His presence. All members will serve the church and support its leadership, as together we worship God. Vocalists There will be up to four (4) vocalists who assist in leading worship with microphones and by visually encouraging the congregation to worship through expression (lifting hands, smiling, etc.). Instrumentalists - The instrumentals consists of all instrumentalists that play while leading worship (piano, keyboard, bass, drums, etc.). All instrumentalists must be teachable, sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and available to rehearse weekly. Audio/Visual Reinforcement Team Those interested in assisting with audio/visual reinforcement need to have some training or understanding of audio/visual equipment. Sound Tec s must be teachable and multi-task oriented.

Participation Guidelines The music ministry is not the right of the talented, but rather a privilege extended to the committed. Bob Sorge The following participation guidelines were developed to help us to honor God, share the sacrifice of ministry equally and that you may reach the full potential of your calling. We believe that God calls and uniquely gifts people to serve in the area of worship ministry. We want to include people called as servants of God, gifted by God to minister to God as part of the Taylortown Community Church Praise Team. Because of this belief, those involved choose to make the necessary commitment of time and model the appropriate lifestyle as a disciple of Christ. As part of the Praise Team, you are in a public ministry and everything you do should reflect the life of a follower of Jesus. On the platform, at home, at work, or school, you represent the Lord Jesus as well as Taylortown Community Church and its leadership; therefore, it is essential that relationship with the Lord and your personal walk with God be the first priority. Fulfillment of excellence in ministry is not in the abundance of desire,... but diligence to preparation --Bernard R Gillott III The following guidelines are NOT meant to be legalistic, but rather to clearly communicate what the leadership views as a reasonable requirement to minister as a part of the team as you assist us in our pursuit of spiritual and musical excellence. Perfection is not required. We are looking for people who are faithful, available, and teachable, and desire that all involved in this ministry continually allow the Holy Spirit to work in their lives. We believe that these guidelines should not present a problem to those who are truly called to serve in the area of public ministry, but rather encourage them to attain to a higher level in their service to the Lord. If any of the following areas are a problem, we are committed to help you overcome them. When God has put His call on you, woe be to you if you turn to the right hand or the left. He will do with you what He never did with you before the call came; He will do with you what He is not doing with other people. Let Him have His way. - Oswald Chambers

The Difference Between Volunteering and Being Called Into God s Service 1. A volunteer looks upon rehearsal as another commitment he s been obligated to fulfill, but someone called of God looks upon rehearsal as another opportunity to be used of God. 2. A volunteer looks upon any constructive criticism with indignation, but someone called of God is grateful for feedback because he wants to be the best he can be. 3. A volunteer is concerned only about the minimum requirements finding the least must be done, but someone called of God puts in maximum effort. 4. A volunteer sits back and complains about this and that bothering him, but someone called of God identifies the problem and becomes an integral part of the solution. 5. A volunteer feels threatened by the talent of others, but someone called of God rejoices with each gift God provides, secure in the Lord s direction. 6. A volunteer has no time for outside practicing or preparation but those called of God come to rehearsals and performances as prepared as possible. 7. A volunteer wants to quit at the first sign of adversity or discouragement, but one called of God digs in and perseveres. 8. A volunteer is oblivious to the needs of ministry, but someone called of God prays over the needs of his ministry. 9. A volunteer is more prone to jealousy of others, but one called of God praises God for distributing gifts and talents as He chooses. 10. A volunteer shrinks back from resolving relational conflict, but one called of God seeks to resolve all relational conflict to preserve the unity of the team with which he serves. 11. A volunteer can t handle being put into situation where he s going to be stretched but someone called of God responds to God s call with humble dependence on Him. 12. A volunteer s main source of fulfillment is his talents and abilities, but someone called of God knows that being used of God is the most fulfilling thing he can do with his life. GENERAL COMMITMENT TO MINISTRY 1. Members of the Praise Team must be committed disciples of Jesus Christ and display an ongoing, growing relationship with Him. All should maintain a consistent devotional life through study of scripture, prayer, and personal worship. 2. Team members must be active and committed attendees of Taylortown Community Church. They will need to display this commitment by regular involvement and participation in Sunday services, meetings and functions, and by supporting the church with their gifts and offerings. 3. Every team member is expected to love their brothers and sisters as they love God. This is evident by submitting to and esteeming one another with joy, honor, and respect. 4. Members are expected to be faithful, available, and teachable. We are flexible, able to receive encouragement, correction, suggestions, and constructive criticism in the interest of what will benefit the team as we strive for spiritual and musical excellence.

COMMITMENT TO MUSIC MINISTRY 1. Being spiritually prepared to minister: Our spiritual preparation has a direct effect on our ability to minister on the platform during the service. We need to come not only ready to sing and/or play music, but to worship the Lord and minister to His people. 2. Musical expertise: When someone is considered skillful, it means that they do whatever they do well. When we offer our sacrifice of praise, our aim is to make it the best possible sacrifice. This takes effort, both in and out of rehearsal. It will take a consistent commitment to giving God and our congregation our very best, with all that we have, every chance we get. This means working on our instrument and/or voice on a regular basis to become the best we can be. If we are striving for excellence MUSICALLY but are ignoring the SPIRITUAL aspect of worship, we exclude God. If we are striving for excellence SPIRITUALLY, but ignore the MUSICAL aspect of worship we will be offending God and our listeners. John Barbour 3. Commitment to unity: We are all God s people and are all one in this worship ministry. Whether we sing in the choir, praise team, play in the worship band, or part of the sound team, all team members are expected to support each other through prayer, attendance, and encouragement. We should never engage ourselves in gossip or unfavorable discourse about our leadership or fellow team members. 4. Commitment to servanthood: Remember Christ did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. All of us have desires to do certain things in ministry. However, let us continue to think of each other before ourselves and be supportive of each other in our endeavors (even if they got the solo part you wanted). Let s follow Christ s example of being a servant. 5. Commitment to prayer: One of the best ways we can support each other is to keep our church, choir, team, band, and its leadership lifted up in prayer before the Lord. Part of your responsibility in this ministry is to pray for our team and the congregation on a regular basis. TIME COMMITMENT Please view your role in leading worship as a priority. We need you here 100% of the time. However, we also realize that there will be occasions when you will be out of town, family engagements, or become sick. Therefore, we look forward to your participation in at least 80% of practices and services. If you cannot be here at least 80% of all rehearsals and Sunday services, then you should discuss this with the Praise Team Leader and evaluate your ability to effectively minister in this department. Your attendance affects both team members and our ministry. This is why every reasonable effort should be made to assure that your attendance is a top priority. Everyone will find it necessary to be absent from rehearsal and/or services from time to time. That is normal and certainly not a problem. However, a member of the Praise Team can and should be expected to always be present unless hindered due to

extenuating circumstances! Simply being tired is not a good excuse for missing rehearsal. Excused absences include: vacations, illness, family priorities, and the like. Understanding this, the following are specific time commitments that you will need to make as you consider your service in this ministry. 1. Praise Team rehearsal begins promptly at 6:00 pm_ on Saturdays. Special rehearsals may be scheduled when special events require. If you cannot be here for a rehearsal, contact the Praise Team Leader to make arrangements to get the music for that Sunday. Generally speaking, we request that those who are not present at rehearsal do not minister on the platform that Sunday (because parts may change), unless otherwise excused or special arrangements are made with the Praise Team Leader. 2. Please be responsible and contact the Praise Team Leader when you are unable to attend either a rehearsal or a Sunday service. If you know in advance that you are going to be out of town and will miss a rehearsal or service PLEASE WRITE IT DOWN and give it to the Praise Team Leader. If an emergency or illness arises that will keep you from being here or make you late, call the Praise Team Leader if at all possible. We understand there are always exceptions and special circumstances that arise in our lives that may make it difficult to meet these guidelines. Communication is the key! If there ever is a situation that will conflict with a rehearsal or service schedule please contact the Praise Team Leader director and they ll try to resolve the conflict. WORSHIP SERVICE EXPECTATIONS 1. Everyone is expected to serve at Sunday morning services as scheduled, in addition to any special service. Please clear any exceptions with the Praise Team Leader at least one week prior to the Sunday or service in question. In true worship, God is preeminent and the center of our attention. Conversely, in false worship I am preeminent and the center of attention. David Morris 2. ALWAYS be attentive to Worship Leader during the services. There will be times when they make a change at a moments notice. It is up to you to watch for possible changes and to take the appropriate action. DRESS CODE FOR PLATFORM MINISTRY Considering that we function as leaders in the church and serve in a public ministry, we must remember that we are representatives of the Lord Jesus Christ and Taylortown Community Church. Dress in a way that honors the Lord. Dressing to the extremes can draw attention to self and not to Christ. Therefore, we have established a standard dress code for the Praise Team. Dress for special services will be determined in advance. Below are some general guidelines for both men and women.

Women You must present yourself in a way that does not distract members of the band and congregation. Again, our focus should be on God and on leading His people into His presence. Casual/formal dress is acceptable if it doesn t draw attention to the midriff region, is extremely tight, expresses something of derogatory nature. Extremely torn clothing is unacceptable. If you aren t sure if what you are going to wear is acceptable you probably should wear something else. Jeans are not acceptable. Men You must present yourself in a way that does not distract members of the band and congregation. Again, our focus should be on God and on leading His people into His presence. Extremely tight or torn clothing is unacceptable. Please steer clear of anything of derogatory nature. If you aren t sure if what you are going to wear is acceptable you probably should wear something else. Jeans are not acceptable! As a general rule, if you are questioning whether or not you should wear a certain item - ask the Praise Team Leader or don t wear it. What Makes A Worship Team Tight? Musicians and technical support under the anointing of the Holy Spirit should inspire the congregation to enter the presence of God, and join the celebration that the worship team leads. If one desires to excel as a worship team member, he or she should dedicate himself to self-education in all aspects of his area of expertise and the associated musical skills that enhance that talent. There are many things musicians can do to develop their skill. First, LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN to other quality worship bands. This is the single best habit a musician can get into to fine tune their talent. Some other suggestions could include subscribing to magazines that keep members up to date about there instrument, practicing with their instrument, purchasing books, videos, tapes, computer programs, and CD s that feature talented, well-known musicians in their respected musical arena. Commit yourself to developing your talent and reinvest the talent God has given you by continuing to learn and grow in knowledge and skill, and see if God will not open the windows of Heaven, and pour you out a blessing of abundance!

Characteristics of a Technically Tight Worship Team: Vocalists: 1. Worship vocalist should know their own voice, their range, their strength, and their weakness. They should make a personal commitment to excellence, and expanding their capabilities through practice and study. 2. Vocalists should set themselves to blend with other ensemble or choir member, and achieve a one voice presentation. If you cannot hear the voices on either side of you while singing in a group, then you are singing too loud. Blend is the number one assignment for worship vocalists. 3. Vocalists should make eye contact with the congregation as much as possible during worship. This connection is very important; for it forms a bond, and promotes the ideas that, we are going into God s presence together. 4. Vocalists should learn how to correctly use a microphone, holding it a few inches from their mouth, and maintaining that distance, letting the sound engineers adjusts volume throughout the group. 5. Vocalists should sing with a very open mouth, to allow sounds to resonate clearly and distinctly. Smiling will help lift the entire sound, and projecting a bright, happy, look encourages others to follow the example. 6. Vocalists should be vocal students. Developing excellent habits of posture, breathing, relaxing, and timing breaths. This will great increase the ability of vocalist to add dynamics to their music and follow the flow of the Holy Spirit. 7. Vocalists should learn the lyrics, dynamics, key changes, endings, and the message of each song, so that reading the lyrics becomes unnecessary. Contact Information: Taylortown Community Church 2656 Taylortown Rd. Shelby, Ohio (419) If you are interested in joining the Praise Team at Taylortown Community Church, please read this manual in its entirety and prayerfully consider that this is what the Lord is leading you to do. This is a big commitment, but the Lord will bless you for being obedient and accepting His calling! God Bless!
