3 Children and Young People s Safety / Accident Prevention Training for Professionals This course is designed to give professionals who work with families the knowledge and skills to deliver child safety sessions to parents and carers. An overview of the causes and effects of accidents to children Information on good practice in accident prevention and risk management An understanding of the links between child development and accidents Examples of good practice and effective methods to pass on information effectively Practical advice on accident prevention Dates available on request Trust

4 Alcohol Brief Awareness & Interventions This training is suitable for a wider range of individuals and organisations working with the general public who are consuming alcohol We will look at drinking patterns as a national picture as well as the impact on local communities The course does not examine drinking dependence but rather, the negative impact it can have on the population with a focus on a preventative approach. To support frontline workers in the recognition of drinking behaviours that may be harmful or damaging to health To equip frontline workers with the knowledge and skills to discuss alcohol and risk taking behaviours when working with individuals To up-skill staff with knowledge and techniques to support individuals (through brief intervention) when harmful behaviours have been identified, aiming to help reduce harmful behaviours and promote alcohol consumption in line with national guidance. 5 Back To Basics HIV & Aids: World Aids Day 2015 Briefing The aid of this two hour briefing is to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and to increase early testing/diagnosis within communities. 6 Basic Drug Awareness This training will give participants basic knowledge and understanding in relation to substance use. Participants will gain an understanding of a range of drugs, as well as the effects on the individual. We will look at the difference in terms of stimulant, depressant and hallucinogenic drugs. This training will look at some of the reasons people use drugs and also the effect substance use has on communities. 7 Sexual Health Service C Card Training A one day course aimed at anyone who works with young people aged years old, delivering c card, condom and sexual health information. From January 2013, there is an expectation that anyone who applies for C Card training will have completed the Introduction to Sexual Health Course. 8 Sexual Health Service C Card Refresher Training A half day course aimed at anyone who has completed initial C Card training. Refresher training is recommended every 18 months giving participants the opportunity to update their knowledge and skills related to the scheme. Update knowledge regarding C Card programme, Chlamydia /Gonorrhoea screening processes and agency requirements for its implementation throughout An opportunity to explore long acting reversible contraceptive methods, (LARCS) Revisit sex and the law, relating to young people and Fraser Guidelines. 9 Cancer Prevention One to two hour tool box talks covering cancers; including signs & symptoms and prevention. Toolbox talks offered on: Breast Cancer Awareness Prostate Cancer Awareness Bowel Cancer Awareness Bladder and Kidney Cancer Awareness Lung Cancer Skin Cancer Awareness How to reduce your cancer risk toolbox talk on lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your cancer risk. The courses are designed to give an awareness of general signs and symptoms. Greater awareness of possible common symptoms and signs of the cancers. 10 Dementia Awareness Training A training session to increase knowledge and understanding of Dementia and Alzheimer s. Develop understanding of the common features / behaviours for people with memory loss. Look into ways we can best support someone with memory loss. The training is designed to help workers, paid carers and volunteers feel more comfortable with this client group and better equipped to meet their individual needs. Increase awareness of memory loss behaviour, Dementia and Alzheimer s Understand common features for someone with memory problems Help to Identify any concerns when working with these clients Explore possible practical solutions to potential problems Understand benefits of activity therapy for clients with memory loss Dates available on request Trust

11 Falls Prevention Training A train the trainer approach to allow others to pass on key messages around the prevention of falls to older people living in the community. The training provides a tool kit for people to use when delivering the messages of falls prevention. Understand the potential consequence of a fall to an individual s health and wellbeing. To be aware of the environmental and individual factors which contribute towards a fall? To know how to teach someone how to get up after a fall. To advice older people how best to prevent falls. 12 Healthy Weight in Adults Brief Intervention This training aims to offer you age related guidance and resources so you can give brief advice or, when able, a brief intervention to help address weight concerns specifically in overweight or obese adults. To become confident in providing adults with weight concerns, brief advice and when able, offer a brief intervention. 15 Mental Health First Aid Event Overview: Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a nationally and internationally recognised training course that gives a person the knowledge, skills and confidence to make an immediate helping response to someone experiencing a mental health crisis. This course will look at how to help, support and give information to people experiencing problems such as depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety or psychosis. A variety of teaching methods (including discussion, group work and DVD clips) will be used to keep the day lively. All those who complete the course will receive a manual and a certificate of participation. 17 Smoke Free Families Reducing Exposure of Second hand Smoke To increase participants awareness about the effects of second-hand smoke. Particularly in relation to children s health To equip participants with the knowledge and skills to help them embed advice to parents and carers on protecting their families from second-hand smoke To introduce participants to the smoke free families programme and how it fits in with the delivery of tobacco control in the North East. 18 Social Media & Healthy Teen Relationships This one day training workshop for teachers & educators who work with young people aims to explore the issues relating to young people s preferred choice of media and how this has impacted on young people s expectations of being sexually healthy. A range of lesson activities and strategies will be explored how to use social networking in a positive way and what is currently available to support sexual health work through national organizations Explored of the education issues around young people accessing pornography and the impact on how this can influence their understanding of sex and relationships. Experienced activities designed to work with groups of young people to stimulate discussions around pornography, sexting, media and the positive use of social networking. Have a brief overview of some of the most popular social media websites currently being used by young people. 19 Basic Suicide Awareness Training Event Overview: Suicide awareness training is a half-day session that aims to increase basic knowledge and understanding in relation to suicide in England. This training gives an overview of suicide globally, nationally and locally. Whilst highlighting key warning signs, risk and protective factors, as well as how to respond in a crisis situation. Appropriate referral routes and signposting is also discussed. 20 Supporting Foster Parents to Talk About Growing Up, Body Changes, Relationships & Sexual Health This course aims to support foster parents and carers to facilitate age appropriate discussions around growing up, body changes, relationships and sexual health. Spaces are limited. Bookings can be made by Foster Carers direct to Health Improvement or via Carer Development Workers The physical and emotional changes during puberty To improve confidence in discussing growing up, sex and relationships. Identify opportunities that can be used to discuss sex and relationships. Being able to answer children s questions confidently. 21 Working with Boys & Young Men s Groups around Health & Relationships This practical course aimed at youth & community workers, pastoral staff and educators will explore opportunities within group work to address issues and develop positive approaches of working with boys and young men, so that they feel safe and supported. There is an expectation that participants will plan and deliver at least one programme of sessions to boys and young men in within 12 months of completing this course. To understand the rationale for working with boys and young men Experience training activities and practical ideas for supporting boys self-esteem, emotional resourcefulness and encourage healthier lifestyles. 22 Working with Girls Groups around Sexual Health & Relationships This two day practical course aimed at youth & community workers, pastoral staff and educators will provide workers with a range of exercises that can be used with groups of young women to build confidence, assertiveness, self-esteem and help recognise the difference between healthy & unhealthy relationships. There is an expectation that participants will plan and deliver at least one programme of sessions to young women in within 12 months of completing this course. To understand the rationale for working with girls and young women around self-esteem, confidence and healthy relationships. Experience training activities and practical ideas and resources for supporting group work. To plan a programme of sessions for group work in your organisation. 23 Youth Mental Health First Aid Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course that gives participants the knowledge, skills and confidence to support a young person who may be experiencing mental and emotional distress.
