3 in Numbers 20 chairs and 5 junior professorships are in the Department - from Banking to Economic History, from Business Taxation to Economic Theory. 1 of a kind: Tübingen business and economic sciences is the most distinguished department across Germany in terms of internationality. Our focus on the area of International Economics is unique, and a number of our chairs, including and International Business, are a part of this concentration. The opportunities for Master s students to complete part of their studies at top universities in Japan, Korea, and China or South Africa and Ghana are also unique. In 2016, University of Tübingen Business and Economics will prepare more than students for challenging tasks in science, business, and 2100 society. In the winter semester 2015/16, the number of applications for the B.Sc. programs was times higher than 6 the number of available spots. For the M.Sc. programs, we received applications for each spot. 11 Around 2/3 of our students spend one or two semesters abroad: whether in the USA, Japan, or more than other countries top-level adjunct and visiting professors give our students valuable insights into business practice, including Horst Köhler, former Federal President, Jürgen Stark, former member of the European Central Bank s board of directors, and Wilhelm Rahl, longtime senior partner at McKinsey & Company. 2 additional languages, or alternatively one Asian language, are what our students are required to learn in the Bachelor s programs International Business Administration and in addition to their education in business and economics. in the lecture halls and seminar rooms, in the library, during office hours, at panel discussions, and at institute colloquia - but also at the WiWi Grill Party, soccer games, or the WiWilympics. At the end of their studies, we want our graduates to be able to do more than research, teach, and learn because excellence is based on exchange and cooperation. 40 research associates and 35 staff members in the School s administration ensure there is a lively exchange between the Tübingen business and economic sciences with universities, researchers, and companies in Germany and throughout the world. They teach, accompany, and support students during their studies and when starting their careers. There are more than 160 paths to 43 countries: Besides universitywide partnerships with foreign universities, the partnerships of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences enable additional possibilities for studying abroad: 38 within Europe, 12 at Asian universities, 2 in North and South America, 2 in Africa, and 1 in Australia (WS 2015/16). 50% of our M.Sc. programs can be studied in English. 4 ... is the result of research strength We are convinced that we offer our students an excellent education if we actively engage in research. Our graduates thus obtain current knowledge and the best possible methods for their career entry. That is how we can fulfill our social mandate of expanding society s knowledge and giving answers to urgent questions in business and economic policy. These are only some of the questions we work on. Our research is focused on the following major areas: and International Business Financial Markets and Banks Education, Qualification, and Labor Markets Behavior of Companies and Organizations The majority of our research is quantitative and empirical and is complemented by experiments and qualitative surveys. Contemporary economic models and methods are of course applied. Another hallmark of our research activities is the interdisciplinarity due to many cooperation projects with the humanities, law, and natural sciences. One example of this is our participation in the Graduate School, which is supported by the Excellence Initiative, Learning, Educational Achievement, and Life Course Development (LEAD). Review and the European Journal of International Management and are often requested to be reviewers. The fact that many of our research projects are funded by private donors and state and federal ministries confirms how relevant our work is for the practice and for society. This is also shown by our presence in review boards as well as in the Senate of the largest German research funding institution, the German Research Foundation (DFG). We maintain a research-oriented atmosphere. The unity of research and teaching can be seen in the School s research seminar series in which researchers from top universities, e.g. Harvard University or Sorbonne as well as international organizations such as OECD, present the most recent findings from their research and thus stimulate our own research and the education of our students. Accounting, investments, finance - What should I know? Controlling - What are the areas of application, tasks, and tools? Market research - How are markets analyzed and company strategies developed? International economic organizations - What do the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, and the World Bank do? Globalization - Does it lead to unemployment? Organization structures - What do Corporate Governance and Diversity Management mean? Unemployment and inflation - Can we prevent one or the other, or even both? We and our young scientists present our research results at the largest international conferences such as the Annual Congress of the European Economic Association, the European Meeting of the Econometric Society, the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, and the Annual Meeting of the Academy of International Business. We hold conferences ourselves in order to bring important research topics and the best international researchers to Tübingen. Our professors regularly publish their research findings in high-ranking international journals with peer-review procedures. Our research team and students look beyond the boundaries of their own subject and university. They want to know how other people do business, work, live, what role cultural factors play, and how business and economics is taught outside of their home university. Expanding horizons is part of the regular program at the School of Business and Economics. If you study in the Bachelor s program and International Business at the University of Tübingen, you are enrolled in an interdisciplinary program that introduces you to other subject areas as well. Our strong focus on international business relations is unique in Germany. We offer our students courses that specifically prepare them for transnational work: from foreign languages, intercultural management, and international labor markets to doing business in China or on the African continent. 7 Number of Tübingen students from the Department of Business and Economics at foreign universities during the winter semester 2014/2015 More than 60 percent of our students spend one or two semesters at one of our global partner universities. Coursework that is done at one of the more than 160 partner universities abroad or at other German universities is counted toward the degree. Universities on five continents teach our students how to navigate in unfamiliar contexts, how to approach people, how to question their own habits, and especially, that business and economics is not the same everywhere. In internships done concurrently with the program, students get to know national and international companies and institutions or get involved in non-profit organizations. Courses that teach qualifications in professional skills assist our students in further developing their personal, individual skills. They obtain additional qualifications that are professionally relevant, for example dealing with business software, rhetoric and presentation skills, or working in teams. As a full university, we offer our students the opportunity to take advantage of a broad course of studies in which specialist knowledge in business and economics can be combined with interdisciplinary offers, for example the Studium Generale and the Forum Scientiarium. For a successful career, the internationally focused degree programs at the University of Tübingen s School of Business and Economics offer an excellent starting point. We present our research findings not only in expert journals, but we also participate in social opinion-forming processes. That is why business and economic scientists from Tübingen are involved in advisory councils and boards of directors, associations and interest groups, as expert reviewers and scientific advisors. The research associates employed by our professors focus on topics that are important for our society. In contrast to universities of applied sciences and cooperative education universities, the University of Tübingen s Business and Economics sees it as its task to carry out foundational research that is relevant to the practice, to advise politicians and companies, and to educate young scientists. By doing so, we fulfill a social demand to which we feel particularly obligated. Our professors offer consulting services for institutions and thus help to shape our society. We examine the importance of our research findings for the practice in cooperation with the Associated Institute for Applied Business and Economics Research (IAW). We have numerous joint projects. This applies to the best of the best lists from academics as well as evaluations from the business world. In the best-known German university ranking, the Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (CHE), we are regularly placed in the top group. In 2014, the Tübingen business and economic sciences achieved top scores in the categories feasibility of studying, overall situation for studying, and graduates done in the regular duration of study, support for stays abroad, IT infrastructure, range of courses and international focus of the Master s programs. Our graduates are top. The high demand for our degree programs makes it possible for us to choose the very best secondary school graduates to study with us in Tübingen. With small groups and intensive supervision, we offer our students optimal conditions. We are pleased that we have only a very small number of dropouts, which speaks to both the quality of our students as well as the quality of our education. University of Tübingen Business and Economics was one of the first to react to the demands of globalization. In the 1970s, it had already established internationally oriented degree programs that included aspects such as foreign languages and cultural and regional studies as required elements of the curriculum. In the past, we have continued to strengthen our international focus, not least by creating the chairs for and International Business. A modern education for our students that is focused on the future is important to us, as can be seen in our range of degree programs. The Bachelor s programs make it possible to have a business and economic science education with a concentration on obtaining additional professional skills. Our Master s programs are conceptualized to follow a Bachelor s degree in the same discipline, and students thus become qualified both for challenging management tasks and for a doctorate. Integrated binational Master s programs with double degrees, in which students spend a part of their time in Tübingen and part at a partner university in Strasbourg (France), Pavia (Italy), or Adelaide (Australia), are important to us. The Master s in International Business is unique in Germany - here students have the opportunity to spend parts of their studies at selected universities in Asia and Africa. In this way, we convey intercultural skills to our graduates and prepare them for their jobs in important markets for the future. We offer a doctorate program for graduates of our Master s programs who are interested in research. For all Master s programs, there is a PhD option that prepares the students in a targeted manner for a doctorate. Tübingen business and economic scientists work in global corporations and midsized companies, in the industrial sector, for service providers and in public institutions, for listed corporations and non-profit associations, as freelancers or employees. They have responsibilities that range from controlling to auditing, from strategic planning and marketing to human resources and sales. Their education enables them to confidently master challenging tasks, to work independently and in a team, and to contribute to the success of a company or institution with their expertise and foresight. Students, professors, alumni, and partners from the practice are connected in the WiWi-Network Tübingen. The Alumni Unit brings together School members and alumni, maintains contacts, and promotes a lively exchange among Tübingen business and economic scientists. At our School, the Center for Corporate Contact brings together companies, students, and instructors. Companies can contact the Center if they are interested in cooperation. This Center promotes cooperation with those in responsible positions and thus contributes to the successful start of our graduates careers.
