Who Are We? Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Partnership NHS Trust (The Trust) is the NHS organisation responsible for providing community health care and adult social care services in Staffordshire and community health services in Stoke-on-Trent. Our services include: District Nursing Community Hospital Care and Services Health Visiting Occupational Therapy Dental Services School Nursing Lifestyle Services Physiotherapy Sexual Health Services Hospital Nursing Offender Health Speech and Language Therapy Adult Social Care in Staffordshire The Partnership Trust is one of the largest community providers in England and serves a population of 1.1 million people and employs in the region of 6,000 staff. It is located within the geographical boundaries of Staffordshire County Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council and contains a number of urban centres including Stoke-on-Trent, Leek, Burton-upon-Trent, Cannock, Lichfield, Stafford, Tamworth and Wombourne, although the geographic area is largely rural. We are winners of the Investing in the Future award part of the annual apprentice awards from Stafford College.
Introduction Apprenticeships not only provide an organisation with a skilled workforce, but also a way of contributing to the community. People are the Partnership Trusts greatest asset and it is important that we invest in staff development, education and training, in all roles across the organisation it is also essential that we look to create a sustainable skilled workforce. Apprenticeships are not only a development tool for existing staff to progress within our organisation but also an excellent way of gaining qualifications and work experience for young individuals, helping employers meet personal development and workforce needs for the future. Apprentices will earn while they learn, gaining practical workplace experience, benefiting from in house expertise. They will feel more valued in their roles and benefit by becoming more confident, competent and productive. This leads to better customer care and satisfaction from patients and service users. We want to invest in our local workforce whilst encouraging and utilising the great benefits apprenticeships have to offer in developing both new and existing staff. We have set up an academy with the aim to support our local economy & develop young people in order to grow our own local workforce. We are extremely pleased to say that this has been recognised by a local provider and we won the investing in the future award part of the annual apprentice awards from Stafford college We offer a broad range of apprentice frameworks that will include, administration, customer service, adult pathways in health and social care and catering to name a few.
What is the Apprentice Scheme? Apprenticeships are work-based learning programmes that enable the apprentice to earn a wage whilst gaining on-the-job experience and skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are available at two levels: Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) on completion this is equivalent to 5 A* C GCSEs Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) on completion this is equivalent to 2 A-Levels All apprenticeships are contained within a Framework An appropriate work-based qualification Qualifications Competency Framework (QCF) at either Level 2, 3 or 4 Functional or Key Skills qualifications, e.g. working in teams, problemsolving, communication and using new technology and numbers effectively A technical qualification such as a BTEC or City & Guilds (as relevant to the specific apprenticeship) These nationally recognised qualifications give the apprentice transferable skills and the modular style of delivery enables the apprentice to achieve milestones throughout the apprenticeship pathway. Apprenticeships have no set duration, as the time taken will depend on the ability of the apprentice and the employer s requirements, on average: Intermediate Apprenticeship will take approximately 12 months to complete Advanced Apprenticeship 12 to 18 months Apprentices earn while they learn and the minimum pay from employers is about 2.68 per hour, working a minimum of 30 hours. (Length of time to complete frameworks is dependent on hours). Salaries vary and can be dependent on sector, age of apprentice and apprenticeship level. As an employee, the apprentice receives the same benefits as other employees. Most of the apprentice s training takes place in the workplace but study for technical and functional/key skills qualifications can be at a local college or a specialist training provider. This can be completed on day release or in a block, although full on-the-job training is becoming more popular. Apprentices have a mentor to support them at work, ensuring that they are given training that develops the skills needed for the job, satisfies national standards and meets the apprentice s personal requirements.
What We Can Offer You! Apprenticeship opportunities within the Partnership Trust There are over 250 apprenticeship pathways recognised nationally. These are a few that we have already delivered within our organisation. If you don t see a framework that you are interested in contact the Apprentice Lead as there may be opportunities to work within a different framework. Business and Administration Customer Care Health and Social Care Catering Buildings maintenance The Partnership Trust currently works with five Apprenticeship Training Providers across England, however we are always expanding to ensure we can meet new opportunities for apprenticeships within our organisation. Alongside the framework the Trust ensure that any in house training specific to the apprenticeship role is received. A few examples of some of the training programs offered are: Dementia Minute Taking Safeguarding Adults and Children Fire Safety Manual Handling Any many more We enable our apprentices to succeed in any position they take on. As an organisation we encourage staff to develop in their roles and contribute to making Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent NHS Trust an outstanding place to not only work but for clients and the community to access services.
These are a few Apprentices opinions about working within our organisation Helped me mature and take responsibility Care for people Earn Money Meet new people Helps to manage my own money A step towards a career NHS Benefits, i.e. Annual Leave Work with people in similar jobs Learn to time manage Gain from other employee s experience See what it s like to work in a busy environment Gain a recognised qualification
In Their Own Words!!! Here are few blogs from apprentices with our organisation that have reaped the benefit of the program I am now in my 7 th month of working as a business administrative apprenticeship within the Workforce Development Team and I believe there are a number of benefits that I have gained. One being that you get to take a big step from school and go straight into the big world of working and getting to work with people in the similar job role as you on a daily basis, who help and encourage you to want to develop. You also get to earn money and the amount of benefits from earning your own money is unbelievable because you no longer depend on your parents but in fact depend on yourself. You do have to make sure you manage your own money on a monthly basis to ensure you make it to the next with some spare. Apprenticeships are a big step to making a career for yourself and getting a job at the end of it which is a big advantage because it is really hard to get a job that you want and enjoy. I enjoy my apprenticeship very much because it makes me take responsibility and become more mature. You also get the chance to meet new people and become friends within the period you are in your apprenticeship and you get to see how people cope with work and how hard it really can be on a busy day. Nobody pushes you too hard to get things done but at the same time they expect you to try your best to get every task completed in the time period they allow you. Everyone treats each other well and with a lot of respect which is really important if you are in an office like I am because in my opinion if everyone is happy and works together throughout the day then work will be a better place. Even though you are working you still get annual leave which allows you to go on your own holidays any time during the year which can be good just for a nice refresh.
In Their Own Words!!! My name is Bethany, I am a support worker apprentice at Haywood Hospital on the Sneyd ward. Our ward is a specialised rehab ward which aims to rehabilitate and educate individuals who have suffered from a stroke and to prepare them for returning back to their homes and the community. My role as an apprentice not only provides an insight to the hospital environment but also to the roles and responsibilities of the many specialised staff, I see and help to provide care from all angles and watch how each vital role contributes to the overall improvement of the individual in order to attain their ultimate goals. There is always something new to learn or experience on the ward; I enjoy learning from and helping all the specialist teams within the ward, from speech and language to the divisional therapist. This opportunity to be an apprentice is an amazing experience; I see all aspects of treatment and work alongside everyone whilst also forming amazing relationships with both staff members and patients. This role has significantly increased my confidence and I find myself able to do things that I could never imagine myself being able to do, this whole experience has shaped my personality, my character and behaviour. I definitely believe that choosing to take this course has been the best decision that I have made for myself so far!
Applying for an Apprenticeship in the Partnership Trust Anyone can apply for an apprenticeship although some government restrictions apply. You must be aged Be a resident in the UK/EEA for the last year Must not have a degree, level 3 qualification or above Must not be in any form of formal government funding education The Trust has two pathways to becoming an apprentice. We have a Support Worker Academy at Level 2 Health and Social Care Apprenticeship Framework. In this pathway we recruit a cohort of apprentices and work with a specific training provider to deliver the framework. The full cohort is recruited together and any learning and in house development is done as a group. We also have apprenticeships that arise through vacancies. These are individual apprenticeships and for the majority any learning will be done within the workplace, i.e. the training provider will come to the workplace to deliver the framework. All available apprenticeship positions within the Partnership Trust will be advertised on and Want to search for Apprenticeship vacancies whilst on the go? Download the Av Search app to find vacancies on iphone and Android, visit the National Apprenticeship Service website, and look for guidance on downloading the application to your phone or tablet.
