3 How Effective is Hypnosis to Stop Smoking? The largest study ever conducted to identify the most effective way of stopping smoking found that Hypnosis was: 3 times more effective than the nicotine replacement methods, and 15 times more powerful than pure willpower Researchers statistically combined the results of more than 600 studies of 72,000 people from America and Europe to compare methods and draw these striking conclusions.¹ The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) received a study supporting the use of Hypnotherapy as the most effective method to quit smoking at their 2007 annual international scientific assembly.² Physicians learned from the study that hospitalized patients who smoke are more likely to quit smoking through the use of hypnotherapy than patients using other smoking cessation methods. 4 Will You Be Successful? Firstly, let s get one thing out of the way. Everyone who wants to can enter into Hypnosis. It is something that you can do naturally every day. More on that later. The point being for now that your hypnotic ability is not something that will prevent you from being successful. However, there are some key questions that have to be asked to know if you will successfully become a non-smoker or not. Honest answers now save from wasting you money and both of us from wasting our time. Is it you who really wants to stop smoking? It may be admirable that you want to stop smoking because your spouse or Doctor suggests or demands it. However, this kind of motivation is not what will work to give you success. You have to have decided for yourself and for your own reasons that you really want to become a non-smoker. Is there anyone else in the home who smokes? It is very important that you have a smoke free oasis while you make this life saving change. This means no one else can smoke inside your home. Otherwise it is like asking an alcoholic to give up drinking while they live in a bar. If you do not currently have a smoke free interior to your home then this situation has to be resolved before I will work with a client. Are cigarettes still your friend? We don t give up friends easily, we call on them without even thinking about it. To be honest, if you still consider an activity that costs and arm and a leg, makes you and your clothes stink, is slowly but surely killing you, prematurely aging you, makes your teeth and fingers yellow and burns holes in your clothes and furniture a friend, then you are not yet ready to quit. Cigarettes are a false friend, a slave driver they can never be a true friend of yours when you see them for what they really are. 4

5 Is it your time to put them down? We all know when we are ready to do that, to put them down to be over smoking for good. If you are not really sure, then perhaps you should wait until you are. If you are going to stop smoking unless you have a drink, or have a fight with someone or have a stressful time at work, etc. then you are not ready. Smoking makes none of these things better, in fact it only brings you more problems. If you still honestly can t see that then better wait until you can. But if you can, then it s a done deal. You can become a non-smoker with the help of Hypnosis. What to Expect When you leave your Hypnosis session you can expect several things to happen that will make the transition to being a non-smoker fell much more natural than ever before. 1. You will forget about smoking more often. 2. Your attitude towards smoking will change, so that when you do remember the old habit, it will not strike you as an appealing choice. 3. The old trigger situations that always seemed to have you lighting up will no longer hold their power over you. 4. You will have important tools and learn new ways to deal with stress that will keep you much more relaxed and calm, with a much more positive focus than ever before. This allows you to better handle stressful situations and the things that happen in everyday life. In talking with my clients about their experience, they typically report that things have been much easier than anticipated. This is mainly because the old associations with smoking have been broken (smoking in the car, after a meal, etc.) and you are not reminded of cigarettes and smoking throughout the day. Because of this change, it is normal to be reminded of the habit a couple of times a day over the first few weeks. You are given the tools to deal with these thoughts, so they do not linger in your mind. These thoughts then become increasingly rare over time, and eventually leave your awareness altogether. 5

6 About Hypnosis Fact: You have already been hypnotized Hundreds, if not thousands of times! Every time you were driving on the freeway and realized that you missed your exit Every time you were reading a good book and hours zipped by like minutes Every time you were watching a movie and you were so engrossed in the story that you did not hear what the person sitting next to you just said you were experiencing hypnosis. It s a tool to communicate with the subconscious mind. And why would you want to do that? Because the subconscious mind is a vast storehouse of memories, beliefs, and programs. Once the brain learns how to do something, it stores that information in the subconscious and it becomes automatic, like riding a bike. you don t have to think about it anymore. This is great when it comes to things like driving a car or swinging a golf club. It s not so great, however, when it comes to things like smoking cigarettes or biting your nails. Habits are programs stored in the subconscious mind, and thus are quite difficult to change or interrupt with the conscious mind. That s why it s easier to work directly with the subconscious mind, installing new programs or habits which are more beneficial. That s why hypnosis is so effective. We use it to directly work on the subconscious programs that are driving you to smoke. You re always aware of what s happening Most people expect hypnosis to be like sleep. They expect to go under for a while, then wake up without remembering anything. That s not the case. You hear everything, remember everything, and know exactly what s happening the entire time. Hypnosis is a very clear, pleasant state of mind My clients typically say things like I was very relaxed and peaceful, but I was aware what was happening. Some people experience heaviness or lightness of the body, or sensations of warmth. The point is, anyone can open their eyes and walk right out of the room during hypnosis. They choose not to because it s such a pleasant state! You won t cluck like a chicken People who participate in stage hypnosis shows are up there to have fun. They never lose the ability to refuse a suggestion. If they were ever given a suggestion which contradicted their morals or principals, they would have the presence of mind to refuse it. 7 The critical factor is the part of the mind that screens information and messages before they become accepted and acted upon. During hypnosis, the critical factor is less active, which allows for the acceptance of suggestions which are beneficial to your well-being. The critical factor never disappears entirely, however. So if you came into my office to quit smoking, and during hypnosis I asked you to cluck like a chicken, you would probably say what the heck for? and ask for your money back. Suggestions are only effective when they direct an individual to do something that is in his or her best interests, and when they are appropriate within the given context.
