1 Maungaraki Tennis Club Newsletter April 2014 Celebrating MTC Success Premier 2 Women s Team Congratulations to our Premier 2 Women s Maungaraki team. They not only topped their grade but are now moving to Premier 1 for the upcoming season. Congratulations to Nichola Boyes, Amy Galloway, Helena Purcell, Jan Milne, Emily Murchland, and Audrey Daly. Alex Calder Davis Cup, international tournaments and how you can help Alex has been selected for the New Zealand Junior Davis Cup team! Late April he competes in Malaysia against 16 other countries in the Qualifying Event for the World Finals later this year. Then in June/July, Alex competes in three Junior International Tennis Federation tournaments in New Caledonia and Fiji. Great for Alex s development and to gain valuable international ranking points. Help Alex out by buying movie vouchers from him. Valid for one year, at any Event cinema across NZ, including Queensgate Lower Hutt and the Embassy in Wellington. Adult $16.50, Child $10. 3 Our Juniors have been busy, here are some pics from our recent Parent Child Tournament. Senior Club Champs Finals to be held Thursday 8 May from 6pm. Rain date is Thursday 15 May. Come along to watch our A grade matches being played. A Men s Singles, A Women s Singles, A Men s Doubles, and A Mixed Doubles. Current state of play can be seen here - Support your club members and grab a hot dog Grill Master Ray will be manning the bbq! Twilight Yankee coming up Tuesday 22 April is our next Twilight Yankee night. This is a great opportunity to connect with Twilight members from both nights. Let s make the April Yankee the biggest one yet come along with food and drink if you like, but the main thing is to connect with our fellow club members and have a social night. 3

4 Trevor Daly Pro-Am Memorial Tournament Our second annual tournament in memory of Trevor Daly will be held on Sunday 25 May (rain off 8 June). Professionals and amateurs compete together in teams, with all funds raised reinvested in our club. More info to come, please keep an eye out and see how you can be involved in or support this very special event. Welcome Richard to the Committee! Welcome to Richard Doyle who has joined the Committee as our Property and Development member, to assist with property, maintenance and grounds matters. It s great to have you on board Richard! Got your attention? Help us keep the club looking great We re planning a Working Bee to make sure the club is looking great for our upcoming events. Many hands make light work and all that please do come along and help out. There may even be some baking. Saturday 10 May pm (rain off date 17 May). No Pay, No Play We know we ve said this before but to be fair and consistent with our other members who have paid, MTC takes a No Pay, No Play approach. This applies to club registration and interclub fees. Please be mindful of others when you commit to playing for interclub especially, it s great to be involved, but you ve got to be genuinely committed to make the most of playing opportunities, and save time and effort finding replacements if you can t make it.
