1 General Guidelines for Challenge Matches All challenges must be made and played. In planning ahead for challenges please try to keep your schedule flexible and be prepared to play at different times.the odd-even system of challenging will be used. Challenges must be made and confirmed by the Sunday before challenges begin by 9 pm and played by the following Saturday by 6 pm. If you are unable to confirm a challenge, a committee member. Booking of 2 hours of court time is suggested in order to prevent running out of time during a match. Matches will be played under the DBH guidelines (See DBHITL.org) and The Code. However, matches must be finished. Do not count games. If players need to come back to finish the match, they should start where they left off and complete the match. Each team brings one can of new balls and the winners get the unopened can. If a team wins both their challenge matches, they can make one more challenge anywhere on the ladder during Week 5. If a player must stop because of injury and cannot continue, the team must forfeit the match. If a partner is unable to play all challenges due to injury, her partner will be allowed to find a substitute to play the challenge matches and the substitute must continue to play for the first half of the tennis year until the end of December. The substitute must play a minimum of 5 DBH matches or the original partner drops 4 spots on the ladder for the following year. A substitute does not inherit a permanent position on the ladder as a result of being a substitute. However, if the injured player is unable to play the challenge rounds and does not return for any matches for the entire season (October- March) and the substitute plays all the challenge rounds and the matches for the entire season, the substitute inherits the position on the ladder and the injured player is considered a new player for the next season. Week 1: Split Partnerships A partnership from last season where each takes a new partner for the next season. Positions on the ladder must be determined by a playoff by Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at 6 pm. If all four players are in agreement, the match can be played at an earlier date. A split partnership is accepted as an established team after they complete at least one set of their first challenge match together. Week 2: Wild Card Challenges for New Partners Only new partners (neither partner had a position on the ladder the previous season) are eligible for a wild card challenge. The challenge may be made anywhere on the

2 ladder, once it is ed to all players on Sept. 11. The best approach is to challenge a little lower than where you think you should be to gain that position, and then use the following challenges to move up. Our professional tennis staff is available to evaluate and/or advise you. Wild card challengers are responsible for: 1. Selecting the position you wish to challenge 2. Calling those challenged to set up the two matches. You may not call before the ladder goes out on Sept. 11. The call must be made by 9 pm on Sept. 11. If by chance two teams challenge the same team a flip of a coin will decide the challenge. Two matches should be scheduled and the matches must be played by 6 pm the following Saturday, Sept. 17. Existing teams must accept the wild card challenge and be prepared to play two matches in the same week. If they do not, they lose 2 positions on the ladder. 3. Reserving the court time for both matches. You must win two challenges in order to take the challenged position. Your opponents move down one position and the new partnership takes their position on the ladder. If you lose one match, you drop to the bottom of the W-109 ladder and then proceed with the two odd-even challenge matches. If a new partnership loses this wild card, but is undefeated at the end of the odd-even matches, they are considered undefeated and can wild card below the position of their original challenge. EXISTING TEAMS NEED ONLY ACCEPT ONE WILD CARD CHALLENGE. New teams at the bottom of the ladder will be positioned by a playoff determined by the number of teams involved. A new partnership is accepted as an established team after they complete at least one set of their first challenge match together. If new partnerships want to join the team after the Sept. 5 deadline it will be on a first come, first served basis and they will be put at the bottom of the ladder provided space is available. Week 3 &4: Odd-Even Challenges The two matches are played on an odd-even basis and all matches must be played. A forfeit is a loss. If the total number of teams on the ladder on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 6 pm is an odd number, the first week of challenges will begin with odd teams challenging even teams. If the total number of teams on the ladder is an even number, even teams will challenge odd teams. The challengers are required to call W-109 to verify the scheduled time. W-109 will post a suggested schedule for the matches. The scheduling of the challenge match should be completed by 9 pm of the prior Sunday.

3 Week 5: Wild Card Challenges for Undefeated Teams If a team wins their two challenge matches, they are entitled to a wild card anywhere on the ladder, with the exception of new teams that lost their original wild card. They are allowed to wild card below the position of their original challenge. The wild card draw is determined by your position on the ladder. These wild cards must be made and played within 6 days of the draw (Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011). The wild card meeting will be held at 7 pm on Sunday, Oct 2, 2011, following week 2 of the odd-even challenges at W-109. The wild card challenging team must submit, in writing, to the Committee, their top 3 choices. The Committee will then start at the top of the ladder and sort out who is playing who. If the challenging team wins, they take the position of the team they defeated and the defeated team moves down one spot. If the challenging team loses, they stay at the position they had before making this wild card challenge. A wild card cannot be won by default; it must be played. If the challenged team does not accept a wild card, they drop 2 positions. A new wild card must then be selected. If the team that wins a wild card is also challenged, they must defend their position on the ladder before they play their wild card. Please remember that a team is not wild carding a postion on the ladder as other wild cards affect players final position on the ladder. If a team does not fully understand the rules of a wild card, please contact the committee befor the draw on Sunday, Oct. 2, All teams must make sure that they can be contacted on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011 between 7-9 pm. If a player knows that she cannot be contacted, please designate a contact person and let the committee know the name of this person. W-109 Ladder 1. All participants must be prepaid members on Wimbledon 109 for the season. 2. A ladder will be established for the players interested in team play. Positions on the ladder will determine to which team each partnership belongs. The ladder will be continuous. Once challenge matches are completed, the number of teams needed, ex., 25, 30 or 35, will represent the W-109 ladder for that season. 3. The intention to play for current players must be put in writing and mailed or ed to the Committee by the end of June. All partnerships, new and old, must be registered by Sept. 5, If a partnership submits their intention to play with a partner before the end of June they are considered registered. No player will be able to hold a position on the ladder unless they have a partner by Labor Day, Sept. 5, 7

4 pm. This is the final deadline. If a player does not have a partner they will be placed at the bottom of the ladder. 4. All teams should consist of 5 partnerships. 5. Any new partnership can challenge in at any spot on the established ladder within the stated time frame. 6. The ladder will be posted with teams starting in the position they earned in the prior season. A new ladder will be ed to all players after each week of play in Sept./Oct PLEASE NOTE: Due to the highly competitive nature of league play at W-109, some partnerships may not make the division of their choice. Since your ultimate position is determined solely by your own performance, it is expected that all partnerships will be willing to play the season wherever they should end up on the ladder. Additional Comments 1. League dues are paid by W Coaching will begin the week before matches start in order to be ready for the first matches. Usually position #5 has the first bye, but this can change depending on circumstances. Players will practice in the positions they have earned on the ladder. All teams must have 8 players attend weekly coaching sessions. If a sub is needed you are responsible for getting one. The person responsible for the spot will be charged for the practice if no one shows up. 3. Prior to the first practice session, it is suggested that each team meet to discuss the role of captains, practice and match schedules, food, etc. 4. Practices may be scheduled between 8:30 am and 3 pm. 5. The captains for the prior season will remain captains until new ones are chosen during the first coaching session. 6. A new partnership (split, new, etc.) is accepted as an established team after they complete at least one set of their first challenge match together. 7. For purposes of settling disputes, the Committee shall act as arbitrator and their decisions shall be binding. 8. All match scores for challenge matches are to be recorded by the winning team in the score book at the desk AND ed to the designated committee member. 9. These are the rules for the season. They will be fairly and strictly enforced and supersede any previous rules and/or regulations. If any of the above rules are not clear to a participant regarding challenges, wild cards, etc., please contact the committee prior to the start of challenges. The Annual Meeting

5 There will be a meeting, once a year, at 7 pm, on the first Tuesday in March, for all players and the Committee to meet and discuss any concerns. The Committee will present the proposed rules for the upcoming season. The Committee will consider any proposals, concerns or requests brought up at said meeting. The Committee will then meet after the annual meeting and finalize rules. Once the rules are finalized, they are in effect until the next annual meeting. The new Committee then takes over. The Structure of the Committee 1. The Committee shall be made up of five representatives - a chairperson plus one person representing each of the four DBH divisions. One of the division representatives will be designated secretary by the Committee and that person will be chairperson for the following season. 2. Each Committee member shall serve a two year term, with a maximum of two terms being served in a six year period. 3. Before the annual meeting, team captains will determine with players in their division, who they want to appoint as their representative on the Committee (if needed). The new Committee members will be appointed and start their two year terms in April after the rules have been finalized. If a division cannot find a representative, they can appoint someone from the team above or below to represent them. 4. At the first meeting of the new Committee in April, the secretary will be elected. 5. If a Committee member needs to resign, she must submit her resignation to the committee in writing. The Role of the Committee 1. The Committee will establish the rules for the W-109 DBH Womenʼs Tennis. These rules will be presented at the annual meeting and then finalized by the Committee after the meeting.if the players feel there should be a rule change that affects the entire membership, the issue will be discussed at the annual meeting; and if need be, the issue will be ed to all players, voted on and passed by a two/third majority. The rules stay in effect for one year.
