5 1.2. Studio work: Work Groups: The studio work of the workshop will be sub divided into (3) working groups. Each group should start from a specific focal point for the urban development of the site. Each group will be composed of students from all participating faculties and will be guided by academic staff from the participating faculties. Each group is assigned a different sub-zone of the designated area. Goals and objectives: We may define the workshop goal as an attempt at studying the urban complexity of the chosen area in order to develop and maintain the historical value of El-Darb El-Ahmar & El-Hattaba together with improving the inhabitants life and needs in addition to a guideline to in cooperate it in the country s national development plan. Workshop Focal Points: 1. Development of public spaces and the integration of urban nodes with space activities. 2. Design of new building typologies within the historical context & applying the architectural regulations. 3. Community based development strategies for the designated area. 4. Historical approach: Integration of modern buildings & strategies that comprises the existing traditional buildings. 5. Environmental approach: adaptive re-use and recycling concepts & strategies for new construction building materials. Based on studying stock market and situation analysis, each team ought to compile conceptual proposals for the development of the designated area. After doing so, they must come to the fore with their major concerns. The formation of linkage between the major concerns and the work of the groups is proposed. Through this a lively discussion is warranted because of the different point of views which thereby results in collective integrated developmental suggestions and strategies. The goals of the workshop are to convey the complexity of urban design development for heritage urban areas. Moreover methods, strategies and positions for urbanism and architectural concepts will be taught. 5

6 For the Fourth day Professors and lecturers will get involved and closely amend each group. At the end a PowerPoint presentation and a discussion of the work results, analysis and aims will take place. At the end of the workshop a final poster (A0) and exhibition of the different concepts will be held. 1.3.Students working groups: The students will be divided to six main groups with a max number of 10 students per Group from mixed universities, each group will be assigned a specific urban subzone from El-Darb El-Ahmar & El-Hattaba to work on. (will be assigned by the Workshop Committee) Interests and expectations: In this workshop we will highlight designated zones of El-El-Darb El-Ahmar & El-Hattaba and study reasons that led to the disastrous conditions without ignoring the inhabitants needs and traditions while making the best use of our potentials and our rich cultural heritage. The workshop attracts students to gather and discuss strategies of social urban design and understand the complexity of El-El-Darb El-Ahmar & El-Hattaba along with hands on methods to develop and upgrade the previously mentioned area with special reference to data gathered from field reports/ questionnaires. Scientific content: Theoretical: Site observations to understand the perception of space and human needs. Understanding urban design factors, elements and aspects of urban space. Strategies and guidelines for developing an informal urban settlement. Site selection by Dr. Rasem Badran, this will be applied by group of lectures basically by Dr. Rasem himself and decisions taken by the workshop Assisting committee. Practical: Documentation of current situation for the urban\social parameters. Analysis of the existing situation by conducting a questionnaire and a SWOT analysis to be able to determine the uprising problems and users needs. Creation of human aspects and social needs matrix. Classification of historical monuments and its architectural elements. Taking decisions and shaping an action plan guidelines. Creating the strategic plan for the selected urban zone. Workshop documents: Input data: Documentation phase Checklist: Historical timeline and heritage review: to be able to determine the historical trail and heritage value, identify main architectural features and historical elements. Documentation Maps: open spaces Network and types, street network, building typologies, building conditions, building heights, land marks and land uses map. (The workshop committee will appreciate any other inputs decided by any working group participating in the workshop) 6

7 Selection of urban zones: Three subzones were selected and will be assigned to each working group during the first day of the workshop: FIRST ZONE: BAB EL WAZIR. SOUQ EL SELAH EL MAHGAR. SECOND ZONE: El NOBARREYA BAB EL WAZIR HISTORICAL CAIRO WALL THIRD ZONE: BAB EL WAZIR EL MAHGAR BAB EL WADAA Output Data: Matrix of Human needs and social aspects for urban space users and residents. SWOT analysis for space parameters. General guidelines and decisions related to space development. (The workshop committee will appreciate any other output decided by any working group participating in the workshop) Final Outcome: Workshop Report, (By workshop committee) Power point presentation showing three phases: Documentation, Analytical and Conclusion phases. A0 Poster for each Group related to the specific urban zone. A strategic plan for upgrading the selected urban zone. 7
