2 A brief history of Cambodia The first humans in Cambodia were hunters and gatherers. Farming was introduced about 2,300 BC. The first Cambodian farmers used stone tools. From about 1,500 BC they used tools and weapons made from bronze. By 500 BC they began to use iron. The first Cambodian civilisation arose about 150 AD in the Mekong River in South Vietnam. A very sad but important part of Cambodia s recent history was a takeover by the Khmer Rouge forces in This resulted in the unfair & inhumane execution of millions of people. Peace was restored to Cambodia in 1998 after the death of Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge forces.

3 National Holidays Victory Day (Jan 7): A day that marks the end of the Khmer Rouge takeover. Cambodian Khmer New Year (14-16 Apr): One of Cambodia s most important holidays. The celebration lasts for three days. Water Festival (9-11 Nov): The streets of Phnom Penh are crowded with people that are celebrating the end of the monsoon season.

4 The Two Brothers This story is about two brothers whose names were Kem and Sem. They lived in a Buddhist Monastery in Cambodia. Both brothers eventually became monks. One day they went to the abbot of the monastery, knelt before him, and touched their heads to the ground. They said, We have lived our entire lives in this monastery. Now we would like to see the world outside. You may go, and with my blessings, the abbot told them. The abbot looked at his astrological charts and told Kem that he would become a very wealthy man. To fulfil the prophecy, he said to Kem, Go to China and become a merchant there. For the younger brother, Sem, the abbot said that he would eventually become a king. The abbot s advice was, When in love, look at the girl s mother. When in pain, don t sleep. And when in bed, don t talk.

5 The Two Brothers Kem decided to take the abbot s advice immediately, so he boarded a ship to China. Sem, on the other hand, stayed in the village, choosing not to take the abbot s advice. He eventually married, but he lived a poor lifestyle. One day, a Chinese ship arrived, and Sem decided to board, having heard about Kem being the richest man in China. After visiting Kem s palace and seeing his fortune, Sem started to follow the abbot s advice. On his journey back, he obtained a magic stick, magic rope and a magic pot. Using his new items while also following the abbot s advice, it led to the King and Queen of Cambodia who offered their daughter's hand in marriage. Eventually, when the old king had died, Sem became King of all Cambodia, just as the abbot in his monastery had foreseen.

6 Religions observed in Cambodia The main religion observed in Cambodia is Buddhism, although the Catholic & Islam religions are also observed. For the Buddhist religion, the place of worship is a temple. People that follow the Catholic religion worship in a church, and Muslims worship in a mosque. Buddhist temple Mosque Catholic church

7 Famous Landmark: Silver Pagoda The Silver Pagoda was built in Its purpose was to house the ashes of the royal family. This building can be found in the capital, Phnom Penh as indicated on the map.

8 Silver Pagoda Inside the Silver Pagoda was a gold Buddha that weighed about 45 kilos, and was covered with approx diamonds. After the Silver Pagoda had been damaged, it was rebuilt under King Sihanouk s reign, using about 5000 silver tiles. During the Khmer Rouge years, many items were stolen, but nowadays the government has tried to restore the Silver Pagoda to its original state.
