Should I publish, patent or is the best solution to keep it as a trade secret, which means keep quiet about it. After participating in this module you will be able to answer the following questions: My rights as a PhD-student, researcher or professor, what are they? Who has the rights to my results? Teachers Exceptions Financiers Employment at foreign universities. Why protect innovations? Is the potential greater than the cost for the protection? This module will take the participant through three steps in order to reach a level of knowledge of how you can look upon your technology in a different way. Step 1: Specify your technical result. Step 2: Define the advantages with your result compared to other existing technologies Step 3: How can these advantages be expressed in terms of company/user profits The module begins with an introduction to the Business Idea Identification process. There will be cases and examples from real life on the process from where research could be transformed into a business idea. After the coffee break the participants will be divided into smaller groups with a work-shop leader from Chalmers Innovation in each group. What impact does it have on the innovator, department and university? The role as a PhD-student/researcher/professor What does it mean to be a founder and owner of a start-up? What is the difference in academic research and commercial research/product development? Do I have to be active/employed in the startup? Are there any demands on the innovator? How to found a start-up What steps must/should be taken prior to start-up formation? What beurocratic steps must be taken while forming the start-up? Costs and time? 6 Short introduction of Chalmers Innovation Chalmers Innovation is a Business Incubator that supports technology-based business ideas and growth companies from universities, colleges and industrial spin-offs. There are approximately 15 new start-ups in the Chalmers Innovation incubation process every year. When going through a Business Incubation process, which normally is between three and four years, you will be provided practical management assistance, access to financing and a shared office space with critical business or technical support services. Each start-up has its own business coach who will assist with expertise in areas like economics and financing, intellectual property rights and marketing communication. They also have a great network in all technological areas which facilitates when starting a new business. Chalmers Innovation also invests up to SEK in start-ups going through their incubation process. The Pre-Incubator The Pre-Incubator is offered to those who have a promising business idea with a good potential. Over a six-month period the requirements for building a new growth company are identified and verified while a business plan is drawn up. The Incubator The Incubator is offered to those who have an established business plan and have already completed initial verification of technical and marketing requirements. After being selected to be one of the start-ups in the incubator a company is formed and the partnership with Chalmers Innovation then continues for a maximum of three years. Assessment criteria Each partnership is preceded by an evaluation process during which Chalmers Innovation assesses your idea or your company. The Business Idea must: Be unique and technology-based, Have a high global growth potential, so that there is potential to create a growth company, Be open to finance from customers or from public or private sector, Already have or be prepared to accept entrepreneurial management.
