1 Greetings from St Bede s We have had a reasonably normal week with teaching and learning in the classroom, but a special week of events out of the classroom. The picture tells a story, and the photos of Feast Day show we had a great day, beginning with an outstanding Mass which had at the end the introduction and performance of another College song, the lyrics of which are shared later in the newsletter. Composed by three Year 13s, Harry Flett, Will Chambers and Patrick Sherwood, the intention is that is doesn t replace the existing anthem, but is another song, that would be sung in Formal or less formal situations. It was aired again at yesterday s Cultural Assembly and those leading began teaching the boys the song at Assembly. The pictures tell a story of the recent Feast Day as well good fun culminating in the Year 9 Haka Competition where the standard was excellent all round. On the Friday night 220 Old Boys met for the annual dinner and the All Time St Bede s College XV was announced, which is published in the Old Boys section of the newsletter. Yesterday we staged the Cultural Assembly and the school was treated to some significant performances, and one by Michael Thwaites (Year 12), who received a standing ovation, but this was one of many warmly appreciated by the College. The lyrics of the new song follows my hope is that at some stage the wider community may have an opportunity to hear it and perhaps join in and sing it. 3 Mrs Rachel Pitcaithly Ministry Team Co ordinator Sacramental Programme At the Feast Day Mass last week we launched our Sacramental Programme. This programme prepares the boys to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation. Predominately this is for our boarders who are away from their parishes for the majority of the year. Some day boys have approached me about joining the programme and I will be contacting their parish priests to let them know this. A very important part of this programme is involvement with parish life and we strongly encourage all students to go to Mass each Sunday in their parish. We ask you, parents and caregivers, to support us in this. We will celebrate our Sacramental Mass on Friday, 4 July at 1pm with Bishop Barry. You are all very welcome to join us. Please keep these boys in your prayers. Sacrament of Confirmation The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated in Holy Trinity Parish Hall on Sunday 10 August at 4.30pm. Confirmation classes for students in Year 8 and upwards begin on 31 July, pm. Please contact the Parish Office, or holytrinitybryndwr@gmail.com with details of Name, Date of Birth and contact details if you wish your child to be confirmed. Mrs Nicola Leete Learning Support Learning Support Buddy Survey We are keen to receive some feedback about our learning buddy system. If your son has a senior learning buddy, could you please encourage him son to complete the survey by following this link: This link is also available on the College s webpage under links on the side bar. Reader/Writer Assistance: Volunteers and/or Donations We are still very much in need of volunteers to work as reader/writers for our students. With such high numbers of students requiring this assistance with their assessments, we rely on volunteers and donations to meet our students needs. If you are available to help on a regular basis each week, please get in contact with me (nleete@stbedes.school.nz). Alternatively, if you would like to make a donation to assist with the costs of providing reader/writer assistance, please do so at the College office. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nicholas and his family. Cultural Assembly Yesterday s cultural assembly provided an opportunity for some of the talented students at the College to share their musical skills with staff and students. The Bedean choir opened the acts with one of their songs for next week s Big Sing and a quartet from the Year 12 Music class sang their version of Titanium. Michael Thwaites (Year 12) wowed the audience with his virtuosic guitar skills and Jonathan Boyle (Year 9) impressed with his confident rendition of Time of your life.

This allows talent to be spotted early (rather than years down the track!) and those with promising voices are pointed in the direction of the choir. This process has slowly born fruit and this year the Bedean choir numbers 65 students. Seniors are doing a fantastic job of providing leadership to younger members and under the very capable direction of director Ms Helen Charlton, the group has prepared a programme for the upcoming Big Sing festival in a couple of weeks time. The choir performs in the heats on Thursday 5 th June at around 11am and again, in the gala concert on Friday evening at the CBS arena. Details on purchasing tickets for the event will be given to choir members on Monday at practice. The choir will also perform at next week s cultural assembly and at the Variety concert on Thursday 12 th June. Obituary Pat Morrison ( ) Pat Morrison attended the College in the immediate post WWII years. His immediate and wider family were strong supporters of St Bede s and were especially generous in their contributions to the Chapel in the 1930 s. Pat was a boarder for three years and his name appeared regularly in the annual prize list. In 1947 he received the class prize for general excellence in the fifth form, leaving school with School Certificate and Chamber of Commerce certification. On leaving school he went to work on the family farm in Darfield and over the years became a well known farming leader. A Nuffield Scholarship awardee he was also a BNZ director, chairman of the NZ Wool Board and NZ Wool Services International as well as serving local community groups with distinction. In recent times he was closely associated with the Central Plains Water scheme and a contemporary reflecting on his efforts said of him, He was respected by everyone and gave everything to any cause he pursued and did it with style and a great sense of humour. Pat s sons Johnny and Peter both attended the College and he was a benefactor to the fund raising campaigns of the 1960s and 1970s. The Association extends its sincere sympathy to his family. Old Boys Dinner On Friday, 23 May 220 old boys, guests and friends of the College attended the 88 th annual dinner of the Association. This was the highest attendance for many years and necessitated staging the dinner in the gymnasium. Thanks to the combined efforts of the PTA, Continental Caterers, the prefects team and assorted helpers the venue was transformed in matter of hours and a great night was had by all. The features of the evening were the announcement of the 2013 Sportsman of the Year; the presentation of specially designed black St Bede s caps to old boys who had represented New Zealand at rugby and the announcement of the All Time XV. Special thanks are also due to the senior boarders who waited on tables and generally helped. Their presence added a special touch to the night and showed the importance of the Association s links to the

9 College. Photographs taken on the night may be found on the College website Enjoying the occasion, from left to right Geoff Bailey, John Reynolds, Alan Dalton, Jim Martin, Richard Sissons, Ray Malone, Fr. John Walls SM, Phil Gourdie and Mark Craddock Sportsman of the Year 2013 Matt Henry Simon Hearsey s testimonial for Matt was as follows: Matt attended the College from 2005 to 2009 and was in the 1 st XI for three years, captaining the side in The Bedean of that year wrote that he was the inspirational leader of the side one of the standout performers of secondary school cricket he was the premium all rounder of the schools grade. An aggressive and skilled fast bowler he gained selection in the NZ under 17 side and was a member of the Canterbury Academy. On leaving school he quickly rose through the playing ranks representing Canterbury in limited overs games and also in the longer four day format. Despite occasional injury concerns he proved his ability by gaining national selection in 2013 against India. In that match he took 4/38 and was a decisive factor in the team s winning performance. Matt is the College s second Black Cap, following Shannon Stewart and we congratulate him on his performances and wish him well for the future. All Time XV Announced A highlight of the dinner was the announcement of the All Time XV. The Association acknowledges the work of the selectors Gerry Davidson, Gary Lennon and Robin Mann and thanks them for their efforts. The team is printed below and the pen portraits may be found on the College website at Wine Opportunity We had many positive comments about the wines at the Old Boys dinner and many wanted to know where they were sourced from. They were supplied by Winesale.co.nz, owned and operated by Pete Dawber (Old Boy). He is happy to supply these wines at the Corporate rate to any Old Boy wine orders: Barren Rock Central Otago Pinot Noir $14.99, Lowlands Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc $10.99, Feudo Syrah (Italy) $ Order through (enter St Bede's College with the order), phone Pete or him christchurch@winesale.co.nz.
