EE and Microcontrollers Module 4- Class1 Prepared by Mr. Asst. Pressor, EEE Deprtment, VAST Department Electrical Engineering, Vidya Academy Science and Technology January 19, 2016
Outline lecture Overview Overview 2 / 14
Expected in class and consequence violation Overview Expected 1 Be inside the class within 5 minutes from the time the bell /or from the time previous hour teacher stops the class (if the previous hour teacher take extra time). 2 Wear proper uniform (decent dress on Fridays) 3 Proper haircut and shaving, put buttons the shirt 4 Wear ID card (If you are not able to bring ID card for any reason, get a letter signed by HoD before 9.00 am in morning) Consequence violation- Attendance will be deducted for that hour 3 / 14
Expectation inside the class Overview 1 Be ready with and Microcontrollers notebook and a pen. 2 No other books or papers or materials should be there on the desk or the space underneath the desk. 3 Sit straight and make eye contact when teacher is taking class. 4 Take down notes and dont talk to each other 5 If you are not feeling well, ask for permission, then lay down your head on the desk. 6 You are free to ask doubts, but it shouldnt be distracting the whole class. Personal doubts will be discussed one to one with the student only after the class hours or during the breaks or during library hour. 4 / 14
Consequence violation expecations inside the class Overview 1 First instance- Warning 2 Second instance- Attendance deduction for one hour 3 Third instance- Attendance deduction for 5 hours 4 Fourth instance- The student will be sent out class and parents will be informed. 5 / 14
Overview 6 / 14
Microprocessor Overview It is an IC which has only the CPU inside them. Dont have RAM, ROM, and other peripheral on the chip These have to be added externally to make them functional Make the system bulkier and much more expensive Due to external components, the entire power consumption is high Have the advantage versatility- User can decide on the amount RAM, ROM, and I/O ports- can be used for large range applications Eg: Intels Pentium 1,2,3,4, core 2 duo, i3, i5, i7 are all processors 7 / 14
Microcontrollers Overview It has a CPU, in addition with a fixed amount RAM, ROM, I/O ports, timer and other peripherals all embedded on a single chip. More compact and cost effective. Total power consumption is less- can be used with devices running on batteries. The amount RAM, ROM and I/O ports are fixedcan be used for limited applications Eg: Motorola s 6811, Intel s 8051, Zilog s Z8, Microchip s PIC 8 / 14
Overview Various 8-bit microcontrollers are: 1 Motorola s Intel s Zilog s Z8 4 Microchip s PIC Each has its unique instruction set and register set. These are not compatible with each other. Program written in one will not work with other. There are also 16-bit and 32-bit microprocessors from various manufacturers. The most common is Intel s The has the largest number diversified suppliers- Intel (original), Atmel, Philips/Signetics, AMD, Infineon (formerly Siemens), Matra, Dallas Semiconductor/Maxim 9 / 14
Overview Overview 8051 Microcontroller- Original member in It has 128 bytes RAM, 4 kilo bytes on-chip ROM, 2 timers and 4 I/O ports- each 8 bit wide (total 32 I/O pins) 8052 Microcontroller- Advanced and more powerful version compared to Programs written for 8051 will work with 8052, but not vice versa. It has extra 128 bytes RAM- so total 256 bytes RAM. It has 3 timers and 8 kilo byte on-chip ROM 8031 Microcontroller- It is referred to as ROM-less External ROM is to be added and external ROM can be as large as 64 kilo bytes. Adding this external ROM takes 2 out 4 I/O ports leaving only 2 ports for I/O operation 10 / 14
Overview Overview 11 / 14
Overview Overview The 8051 is available in different memory types- UV-EPROM, flash ROM, NV-RAM (or EEPROM). There is also one time programable (OTP) version microcontroller- It uses UV-EPROM (Ultra-Violet Erasable Programable Read Only Memory). PROM burner is required to load the program. Erasing the program using UV-EPROM eraser may take about 20 minutes. AT89C51 from Atmel Corporation- It uses flash ROM. Flash memory can be erased in seconds. It requires a ROM burner that supports flash memory to load the program. 12 / 14
Overview Overview DS89C4x0 from Dallas Semiconductor- It uses flash ROM- can be erased in seconds. It comes with on-chip loader, loading program to on-chip flash via PC COM port. DS5000 from Dallas Semiconductor- It uses NV-RAM (Non Volatile Random Access Memory) or EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Read Only Memory). The program can be changed one byte at a time. It also comes with on-chip loader OTP (one-time-programmable) version This is used for mass production once the product design is finalised. It is much cheaper than all others. 13 / 14
