1 Stallions Hockey of Western Michigan University Constitution Preamble: Stallions Hockey of Western Michigan University is a registered hockey organization of USA Hockey. The Stallions are members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) and the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League (GLCHL). The Stallions are a non-varsity athletic team at Western Michigan University. Article I: Stallions Hockey of Western Michigan University Section A. Types of Membership Article II: Membership 1. Rostered Player: player/student who is eligible for all team activities including full game playing rights and is a registered member of the team with USA Hockey. Responsible for full fee. 2. Development Team Player: player/student who is eligible for all practice and team activities except games and not registered with USA Hockey. Responsible for ¾ team fee. 3. Coach: team paid staff member to coach team in practices and games and all coach responsibilities. 4. Manager: adult volunteer that handles all paperwork and banking for the team. Section B. Membership Qualifications 1. Demonstrates ability to play competitive hockey at a collegiate level. 2. Be chosen as one of the top players at the team tryouts 3. Maintain academic standards of ACHA a. Maintain2.0 accumulative grade point b. Pass 24 credits in the previous September August c. Pay required club fee No individual will be denied membership because of race, sex, color, height, weight, age, handicap, national origin, sexual orientation, or veteran status. Section C. Selection of Members 1. Members are selected based on their overall performance at a Tryout Tournament to be held in September of every year. Potential members are evaluated by hired coaching staff, their assistants and other qualified individuals form the hockey community. 2. Students may practice with the Stallions during the season (after tryouts) if permission is granted to them by the coaching staff. Page 1

2 3. A new member may obtain a walk on tryout at any time during the season until the deadline date which is set by the ACHA. New member are contacted by the coaching staff to be informed of their acceptance into the organization. Section D. Voting Privileges Every active member of the Stallions is able to both run and vote for cabinet positions (i.e. President, Vice President, Treasurer, etc.). These votes take place at the conclusion of each season (mid-march) for the following season. Section E. Termination of Member ship 1. ACHA academic requirements dictate that any member not meeting the requirements will be barred from playing games. The player/student may remain a member of the team with game privileges revoked at the discretion of the executive cabinet. 2. Any player not meeting the athletic performance requirement of the team may be terminated by the coaching staff. 3. Any player who does not remain in good financial standing with team fees may have their membership terminated by the executive cabinet. Section A. Elected Officers Article III Officers 1. President: Represents the organization at the University level, attends required Western Student Association meetings, oversees and submits the budget. 2. Vice President: Assists the President in all of his/her duties. 3. Communications: Manages the organization Website. 4. Captain & Asst. Captains: a. Spokesperson for team with official games b. Lead off ice training c. Communication between coaches and team Section B. Qualifications for Holding Office Officers must be currently enrolled as a WMU student and current member of the Stallions Hockey of Western Michigan University. Section C. Selections of Officers 1. President, Vice President, Communications & Treasure Elections occur at the conclusion of each season, usually in mid-march. Any active member may vote and run for any position. Officers will immediately assume their duties and hold their positions until the next year's elections. Page 2

3 2. Captains: are appointed by the coach approximately two weeks after the team has been selected. All rostered players are eligible. Section D. Filling Vacancies 1. The President will fill all positions if the elected officer is vacant. 2. The Vice President will fill the President's position if the President is vacant. Section E. Recall of Officers Officers can be recalled and impeached if by a majority (3/4) vote of all active members. Section A. On-Campus Accounts Article IV Finances This organization will be subject to all University policies, procedures, and practices regarding student organization accounts and finances. If this organization disbands, by policy, all SAF funds in the on-campus account will revert to the university. Section B. Off-Campus Accounts Non-university funds will be kept in an account that will be agreed upon by the executive board members. An effort will be made to make this decision permanent, in which case Article IV, Section B will be amended. Section C. Dues, Assessments, or Initiation Fees There is an annual fee of $3200 dollars for all members of the official roster. This fee is due no later than the first of October. Failure to pay this fee can result is a reduction of playing time and/or removal from the official roster. Section D. Financial Policy All financial books and records will be audited at least once a year per university policy. The elected executive board member in charge of finances will attend a university financial workshop as required by Western Michigan University. Section D. Disposition of Non-University Funds in the Case of Inactivation In the case that this organization disbands or is dissolved, all non-university funds will remain in the designated account for later use if this organization becomes active in the future. 4 Article V Statement of Compliance This organization will comply with all SA&LP and University policies, procedures, and practices and all local, state, and federal laws. Section A. Registration/Reactivation The President of this organization will be responsible for completing and following-thorough on the requirements/annual reactivation process as set forth by SA&LP. Article VI Section A. Frequency of Meetings Meetings will be held through ot the tryout process First official meeting will be held after the team is selected. Guidelines for the season and team contracts will be signed. Meetings during the season will be held on as needed basis at team practice. Official end of season meeting will be held two weeks of the last game of the season. Section B. Quorum ¾ of all members are required to conduct business Article VII Advisors Head Coach: responsible for selection of team, preparing and execution player development, all game responsibilities, assist players in fundraising, represent team at GLCHL, ACHA meetings and assure that the team represents WMU in a positive manner at all times. Term of head coach is open ended. Coach may be asked to leave by a vote of ¾ of the team members, Selection: coaching position will be posted on the ACHA website. All resumes will be reviews by manager and group of adults with hockey experience to fairly evaluate the candidate and make selection. Manager: responsible for all financial records, advise players on budget request to University, team schedule, ice rental, team travel arrangements, assist coach on administrative functions, obtain individuals for game requirements, team communications, report all game statistics to ACHA, assist in team fundraising and coordinate the hiring of new coach. Term is open ended. Selection: appointed by coach Page 4
