Publisher: Dorling Kindersley Description: Classic philosophical problems are examined through discussions and a wide range of historical readings. The foundations of Western philosophical thought are explored from such thinkers as Socrates, Descartes, Nietzsche, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Prerequisites: Completion of all reading courses required by the College's Testing and Placement program and eligibility for enrollment in ENGL 101. (Core A) Course Goals: The goal of this course is to introduce students to the discipline of philosophy including its major subfields, theories, methods, terms, concepts, and issues as they have been set forth in the Western intellectual tradition. A second goal of this course is to apply these methods, techniques, terms, etc. to the comparative analysis of selected classical and modern works within this tradition. Outcomes: Upon completion of this course students will be able to: *define philosophy and its major divisions *identify central questions of the different branches of philosophy
2 * define and assess such issues as free will, the mind-body problem, the concept of selfhood, and the pursuit of meaning. *understand important historical developments which bear on the tradition. Course Procedures The course will be divided into 8 parts, called "modules." A module is just a topical unit, much like a chapter in a textbook. We will begin a new module roughly every week. This course will include reading, writing, and regular assessments (exams and quizzes). Readings will familiarize you with the issues. Discussion assignments will give you an opportunity to express your point of view. And finally, quizzes and exams will assess how well you are keeping up with the material and understanding it. Since you are responsible for all your work on your own, managing your time in order to keep up with established assignments and due dates will be a critical factor in your success in this course. Readings: Every module includes a set of readings. Click on "Modules" to view a schedule of the Modules and the readings. Module commentaries are also located here. Their purpose is to introduce and summarize the readings. I recommend that you look at these before going to the text. Discussion Assignments: On five different Wednesdays, a new discussion forum will appear under "Discussion Board" with a discussion question that is related to the issues discussed in the current module. In addition to answering the assigned question each week, you will be interacting with your peers. Your response to each week s assigned question, and two replies to peers posts, are due on the following Tuesday by midnight. Initial responses are to be at least 350 words. Responses are judged by how well they advance the discussion. Mere agreement with a classmate is not an acceptable response. To add a post, click on Discussions, then click on the current discussion assignment, then click on the compose tab. Quizzes: There are three quizzes offered during three different weeks. The standard availability period of quizzes is midnight Wednesday through 11:55 pm on the follwoing Tuesday. You can take a module's quiz whenever you are ready, but you must take it during that period. To take a quiz, select the "Quizzes" option from the menu at the top of the screen, then select the quiz. Every quiz has a time limit of 20 minutes, and will consist of 10 multiple choice or true/false questions at 5 points each. Quizzes can cover any content associated with a module. You may consult your text and notes during a quiz. Quizzes do
3 not require a proctor. Exams: There are three exams offered during three different weeks. The standard availability period of exams is midnight Wednesday through 11:55 pm the following Tuesday. To take an exam, select the "Quizzes" option from the menu on the top of the screen, then select the exam. Exams will have 25 multiple choice or true/false questions at 5 points each, and you will have 60 minutes to take each exam. You may consult your text and notes during an exam. Exams do not require a proctor. A Note About Submitting Work: You are responsible for making sure that all your discussion posts have been submitted successfully before the deadline. You will know if your discussion posts have been submitted successfully because they will appear in the forum. You are responsible for making sure that all your quizzes and exams have been submitted successfully before the deadline and within the time limit. You will know if your quizzes and exams have been submitted successfully because you will see a confirmation page after you click the "Submit" button that will indicate that your assessment has been submitted and will indicate your score. Grading: Your final grade is made up of your Discussion Assignment grades, Quiz grades, and Exam grades. There are a total of 825 possible points in this course. You can access your grades at any time by clicking on "Grades." The point breakdown by category is as follows: Each discussion assignment is worth 60 points, and there will be 5 discussion assignments throughout the course, so there are 300 points available from discussion assignments. Each quiz is worth 50 points, and there will be 3 quizzes throughout the course, so there are 150 points available from quizzes. Each exam is worth 125 points, and there will be 3 of them throughout the course. This means that 375 points comes from exams. Your final grade can be determined from your total points earned according to the following: pts. A (excellent) pts. B (above average) pts. C (average) pts. D (below average)
4 490 and below F (failure) This will be the scale of grading if any student earns points. Otherwise I will grade on a curve based on the highest score in the class. So, if a the top score earned is 775/825, and your grade is 700/775, I will factor 775 (not 1000) into 700 to come up with your percentage--roughly 90%. Policies Late Work: Late discussion board posts, exams and quizzes will not be accepted. You are given an entire week to complete quizzes and exams, and five days to submit discussion work. These extended due dates are meant to take the place of any make-up period. I strongly urge you to do your work earlier in the week rather than later. That way, you ll have time to address any technical difficulties. Time Limits: Quizzes have a time limit of 20 minutes, and exams have a time limit of 60 minutes. These are strict time limits that you are responsible for adhering to on your own. D2L will not stop you when the time limit is reached. You will be penalized one point for every minute that you exceed the time limit. Saving an assessment in progress does not pause the timer. Technical Difficulties: You are strongly urged to take your assessments and submit your discussion posts as early as possible, and over a reliable internet connection. Technical problems are not automatic excuses for missing or late work, just as in a traditional course a printer failure would be no excuse for turning in a late paper. Academic Honesty Policy Cheating, plagiarizing, falsifying results of study or facilitating academic dishonesty are prohibited and can result in sanctions as extreme as suspension from class (es) and/or from HACC. Final Note These policies may seem very strict, especially to those of you who have never taken an online course. This is because the success of an online course depends entirely on the responsibility of students to complete their work on schedule. I am required to enforce these policies rigidly in order to ensure fair treatment to everyone in the course. If you do not think you can commit to the work that is required, I do not recommend taking this course.
