MSM2G5: Java session 1 Paul Flavell and Richard Kaye School of Mathematics and Statistics University of Birmingham November 2000 Your objective for your first lab session with Java is to get used to the windows environment we shall be using and to learn how to enter, compile and execute a Java program. You should work through the bulk of this handout during the first practical class. If absolutely necessary, part of the next practical class may be used to complete the work. There will be an assessment on this material next week. Assessed work should be sent to me by as indicated by Friday 17th November at noon. The details, including the questions and exercises that will be assessed will be handed out at next Monday s lecture. There is no time pressure or assessment pressure this week, so take your time to learn the basic material ready for the first assessment. Don t rush make sure you understand what you are doing. The computer labs P6, P9 and 304 may be used at any time when there are no booked classes. In particular, you may use P6 and P9 between 6pm and 10pm on week days. Further notes, corrections and example programs will be available in due course at the web site If you have time, take netscape here and bookmark this site. You will find it useful later on in the course. Logging On For people working in P6: (If you are working in P9 then skip this paragraph.) If necessary, turn the PC on. Then log on to Windows 95 by typing your ugs2 user name and password at the first log on prompt. You may press CANCEL at the second logon prompt. After a while, the Windows 95 desktop will appear. Double click on the red icon labelled exceed. In all labs: select ugs2 and then log on in the same way you did for Maple. The windows environment and FileManager The windows environment under unix may take a little getting used to at first, but once you do get used to it, it is a very easy environment for manipulating files. You already have some experience with OpenWindows from the first year Maple classes. 1

Exercise. As a simple exercise in the windows environment, you should quit any windows that are displayed on the WorkSpace. To close a window, move the pointer so that it is in the title bar, hold down the MENU mouse button (= right mouse button), drag the pointer down to quit and then release the mouse. Any icons on the desktop may be quit in a similar way. FileManager provides a graphical method of managing your files. To start FileManager, press MENU on the WorkSpace. A menu will appear and what is available depends on how your session is set up. You may find a file entry: selecting this will give you a file manager item. Alternatively, if you see a program item on the menu, choose this and select FileManager from the submenu and then release the mouse. After a few seconds, either the FileManger itself will appear, or the FileManger icon will appear. In the latter case, double click SELECT (the left mouse button) on the icon. You can move FileManager around the WorkSpace by holding down SELECT on its border and dragging it. Try this. You can iconize FileManager by clicking SELECT in the button in its title bar. FileManager is still there but in icon form. To restore FileManager, double click SELECT on its icon. Try it. This is useful if the WorkSpace gets crowded. FileManager should display the files in your home folder. So you should see any files left over from the first year Maple classes. Creating a folder. Keep all the files relating to this course in a folder called MSM2G5 in your home folder. You first have to create the MSM2G5 folder. To do this, you can SELECT file from the main menu and then New Folder. You will have to enter the name of the new folder. Type in MSM2G5. Double click SELECT on the MSM2G5 icon. FileManager will then display the contents of this folder, i.e., nothing since we haven t put anything in it yet! A simple Java program We ll illustrate how to enter, compile and execute a Java program by writing a simple program that prints out Hello World All the files relating to a Java program must be put in a folder, so inside your MSM2G5 folder, create a new folder called Hello. Display the contents of Hello by double clicking SELECT on its icon. Next we must create a file in which to write the program. This is the same as creating a folder, except you use New File or Create Document in the File menu instead of New Folder or create folder. Name the file Hello.java In order to enter text into the this file, we must open it in the text editor. This is easiest done by clicking SELECT on its icon and then clicking Open. Enter the following. class Hello public static void main(string[] arg) 2

System.out.println("Hello World"); Next, save the file. One way of doing this is to hold down MENU on the file button of the text editor and then drag the pointer to save. The Java Compiler and the Java Virtual Machine Java programs are executed by the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Java source files, such as the one you have just entered are written in too high a level language for the JVM to understand. First they must be translated into a low level language which it can. This is accomplished by means of a Java compiler. To use the Java compiler we need a Command Tool or Terminal window. This is a window in which it is possible to type commands. To start a Command Tool or Terminal, click SELECT on the workspace and then choose Terminal or Programs/Command tool. A command tool will appear. Inside this window, type the command to change directory to the one where you created your program: To compile your program, enter cd MSM2G5/Hello javac Hello.java After a short delay, the command prompt will reappear. If any error messages appear that you can t sort out, ask for help. If you look in FileManager, a new file should have appeared called Hello.class. This is the file that the JVM will execute. Tell the JVM to execute your program by typing java Hello in the command tool. The message Hello World should appear. Modifying your program Modify your program to print out some other message by editing its source file. Once you ve done this, you need to save the file. Compile it. (javac filename.java) Execute it. (java filename) If there is an error in your program, the compiler will not be able to compile it. Instead, it will produce an error message. For example, the semi-colon in System.out.println("Hello World"); 3

is essential. Try deleting this semi-colon and recompiling see what happens. To prepare for the next section, quit the text editor and command tool. Change the current folder of FileManager back to MSM2G5 by double clicking SELECT on the MSM2G5 icon in FileManager. For loops We ll discuss these by means of an example. In a folder called ForLoops, create a file called Test.java and type the following into this file. class Test public static void main(string[] arg) //We ll use the local variable i as a counter. //All local variables must be declared. int i; for(i=0; i<10; i=i+1) int a = i*i; System.out.println(i + " " + a); Compile and execute this program. For loops are used when we want to repeat a block of statements a number of times. The general format is for(initialization statement ; test ; change statement) //block of statements test should be some expression that evaluates to a boolean, i.e., it must evaluate to true or false. Here s how the for loop executes. 1 The initialization statement is executed. 2 test is executed. If the answer is false, then we exit the for loop. 3 Execute the block of statements. 4 Execute the change statement. 5 Goto 2. Note: in Java, a < b 4

returns true if and only if a is strictly less than b. Similarly a > b returns true if and only if a is strictly greater than b. Use <= to test for less than or equals. Use >= for greater than or equals. To test equality, you have to use a == b rather than a = b. There ll be more about this later. Try modifying the above program, e.g., changing i < 10 to i <= 10. What do you think will happen if you change the test to i < -1? Try it. What do you think will happen if you change the test to i >= 0? Try it. Now we have a problem: how do we stop the program? It s a good idea to know how to do this since it s very easy to make a mistake that results in a program never terminating. One of the following should do. While holding down the Ctrl key, press C. Quit the Command Tool in which the program is running. A Triangle class We ll write a program to draw triangles, e.g., * ** *** **** Such a triangle has two properties, its size and the character used to draw it. This is similar to the Square example from lectures. Put all the files for this program in a folder called Triangles. Your program should consist of two source files. One containing a class called Triange and the other containing a class called Test, which is a small program to test the Triangle class. Important. The source file that contains a description of a class named Triangle must be named Triangle.java. Similarly, the source file that contains the Test class must be named Test.java. You should insert comments in your source files, but they don t have to be as extensive as the comments in the examples given in lectures. The Test class must have the form class Test public static void main(string[] arg) 5

//the statements that //do the testing I ll leave it up to you exactly what you put in your test program. It doesn t have to be exactly the same as the Test program for the Square class. But it should create at least two instances of Triangle and manipulate them using the appropriate set methods. Finished Already? Here s some other things to do. Explore the Sun website, see the lecture handout. If you don t know how to use a web browser, ask one of the helpers. Modify your Triangle class so that it prints isoceles triangles. 6
