1 All You Need To Know About The Horsham West Colour Fest WHAT a fun, non-competitive, family-friendly, 5km run/walk, culminating in a celebratory Colour Party until 1:00pm WHEN Sunday, 25 October 2015 WHERE Sawyer Park, Horsham START TIME the pre-run warm-up starts at 10.30am; the first runners will kick off soon after. Runners will be started off in waves to minimise congestion at the Colour Hotspots. Do I need to be a serious runner to do this? Absolutely not! The Horsham West Colour Fest is a day of colourful enjoyment for all ages and fitness levels. The focus is to have fun with family and friends. Feel free to run, walk, skip or dance your way along the 5km course - whatever takes your fancy. Is the Colour Fest a timed event? We won t be timing you, so run as fast as you can, or make it a gentle stroll if you prefer; but you may like to time your own run if you re interested in your performance. Is there an age limit for younger runners? Or ancient ones? There are no age limits! If someone can safely cover the course, they can participate. Strollers and wheelchairs for those who need them are very welcome, but not just for fun - sorry. Does everyone run together? We will let everyone onto the course in waves to avoid congestion at the Colour Hotspots. If you are serious about running, you may want to make your way to the front early to be amongst the first group to enter the course. Is the course wheelchair friendly? We think so, but it is for you to decide what you and your wheelchair are suited for. The track is mainly gravel and dirt paths. If you are unsure, contact us for the exact course so you can check it out before registering.
2 Can I bring my bike? Or my dog? Unfortunately, for safety reasons, the only wheels allowed on the course will be strollers etc. for the very young and wheelchairs for the infirm. Otherwise, it s a feet-only event. And a maximum of two per participant, please - no dogs, cats or other animals. Should I bring something to drink? We encourage all Colour Fest runners to bring a bottle of water with them to keep hydrated. There will be a water station roughly half way along the course. Very strictly NO ALCOHOL on the track or at the Colour Party. What should I wear? We suggest you wear as much white as you can to get the maximum effect of all that coloured powder being tossed about. Wear your tutu or a fun outfit if you wish, but the more white, the better. After all, the more colour you can be seen to have picked up along the way, the more impressive your before and after selfies will be! How will I get coloured? The powder will be squirted at you as you pass through Colour Hotspots roughly every kilometre along the way. It s like getting into a powdered-sugar food fight! Dash through quickly if you want to avoid it, or better, linger longer to get a thorough dousing. And then there s the Colour Toss What s the Colour Toss? Onlookers and runners will celebrate the event with a Colour Toss every few minutes at the Colour Party at the end of the course. As a participant, you will receive one packet of colour at the finish line (and more can be purchased in the party area once you have finished the run) - toss it at someone else, or toss it over yourself! Are the colour powders safe? Our coloured powders are made from food/cosmetic grade cornstarch and dyes. If you have any skin sensitivity or other allergy that may be irritated by these ingredients, or if you suffer from asthma that could be triggered by the powder, take suitable precautions before participating. It s always better to keep uninvited stuff, including Colour Fest powders, out of eyes, so if this is a concern for you, you could wear goggles or glasses, and perhaps a dust mask or a bandana or scarf over your mouth. Some personal belongings such as phones and other mobile devices, cameras etc., aren t designed to come into contact with quantities of powder and still work afterwards. Think carefully before you bring them with you, and if you do, make sure that you keep them out of harm s way. Will the colour stain? The colour from our Colour Fest powders should wash out of clothes (or at least, mostly!) in cold water and, as with most dirty clothes, the sooner you wash them, the more effective it will be. The best plan is to wear only what you re willing to have made colourful! That includes your shoes, which often are not washable. Car seats are also tricky to pop into the washing machine, so if you plan to drive home after the event, throw in some old towels or plastic to sit on. And do the same with strollers, etc. That covers my belongings, but what about me? The coloured powder will wash off you, but we suggest the following precautions if you re worried. Apply sunscreen not only as UV protection (we re hoping for a lovely, sunny day!), but also as a barrier between your skin and the colour; add baking soda to your bodywash to help remove the colour. Oil your hair with conditioner or coconut oil or similar before you run, or keep your hair covered - a hat, a scarf or even a swim cap won t look out of place amongst the craziness. Bi-carb soda and anti-dandruff shampoo will encourage more stubborn colour to leave, but it especially loves fair hair, so blondies may need to be more persistent and prepared to put up with a new tinge for a few days. But what if I want to keep the colour in my shirt as a souvenir? The best way to preserve the colour in your clothing is to spray it with vinegar, let it dry and then iron it. Even so, the colour will eventually come out with repeated washing. And speaking of souvenirs, don t forget that you can buy a special silicone wristband at the Colour Party; but get in quick - stocks are limited. What is the Colour Party? We will celebrate the fine achievements of all our partipants with a bit of a shindig at the end of their run. There ll be colours flying all over the place, music to dance to, a coffee van and other stuff to buy including yummy sausages and cold drinks, extra colour powder and those silicone wristbands (so bring some spare change), as well as a pretty much guaranteed party atmosphere! The party wraps up at 1pm, so get there in good time to join in. Oh and did we mention it s gonna be colourful?!
3 Can spectators come along? Of course! The more, the merrier! Spectators and cheer squads are welcome at any point alongside the course, but not actually on it, and they are invited to join in with the Colour Party. There s no cost for any of that. There ll be powder packets for anyone to purchase for $3 each on a first come, first served basis while stocks last, as well as other goodies to buy. You may want to warn them, though they will probably leave a whole lot more colourful than they arrived! Can I photograph or film the event? The Horsham West Colour Fest will be a great opportunity to capture some crazy, colourful memories of a fun day. You are welcome to be as snap-happy as you like, BUT please remember to protect your precious phone or camera from the colourful powder (plastic food wrap or a snap-lock bag would be a good idea). What do I do if I need help at the Colour Fest? There will be plenty of highly-visible Colour Fest officials all around the course and at the Colour Party. They shouldn t be hard to find, so if you have any problems or need assistance of any kind, just let one of them know. What s the cost? If you register before 5pm on 09 October, you will attract an Early Bird discount and save $10 per participant. After that, you will be charged the full fee. Ages are as at the date of the event, 25 October Early Bird Tickets (available until 5pm 09 October): Adult (aged 18+) $28.00; Child (6-17) $18.00 Full Price Tickets (from 5pm 09 October): Adult (aged 18+) $38.00; Child (6-17) $ year olds or younger may participate free of charge, but must be accompanied by a registered adult. Where will the Colour Fest proceeds go? All proceeds from the Horsham West Colour Fest will go directly to the Horsham West Primary School and will be administered via the hard-working Parents Club for the benefit of our students. Your contribution in supporting this event will be much appreciated - thank you. Can I have a say in how the money is spent? You sure can! The Horsham West Parents Club usually meets in the staffroom (Hillary Street entrance) on the third Monday evening of each month. Come along, join in and have your say. Keep your eye on the school app, the website ( the newsletter or the Horsham West Primary School Parents Club Facebook page ( for confirmation of meeting dates and times. The Colour Fest sounds great! How can I get involved? It s easy - register your participation and pay for your ticket on Qkr!. If you want to buy multiple tickets, you can pay for them all at once by adding them to your cart, but remember to register each participant (aged 6 years and over) separately on Qkr! so that we receive their signed consent form. There s no need to register children aged 5 years or less. Then all you need to do is collect your Colour Fest pack at Pick Up, and turn up on the day! I don t know about Qkr! How do I use it? Simply download the free Qkr! app (provided by Mastercard, so you know your payments are secure) to your smartphone or other mobile device, make sure you register your child enrolled at the Horsham West or Haven school campus, and/or register someone else (like yourself) as a Guest. For users new to Qkr!, step-by-step instructions are included at the end of this document. If you would like some help getting started, call in to the Horsham West Primary School office (Hillary Street), or ring the school on If you don t have a mobile device, you are welcome to use the ipad at the school. Please visit the office in Hillary Street during normal school hours. What, when and where is Pick Up? You will need to attend Pick Up prior to the event to collect your Colour Fest pack. This pack will include the special wristband ticket that entitles you to enter the course. Once you register for the event on Qkr!, you will be issued with a receipt. You will need to print the receipt and bring it with you, or show it as a screenshot on your mobile device at Pick Up. All participants (aged 6+ years old) will need to pick up their registration pack BEFORE 25 October. WHEN: Thursday, 22 October and Friday, 23 October, 3 6pm each day WHERE: Horsham West Primary School Gym, Hillary Street, Horsham
4 Can someone else collect my pack for me? Yes. Just make sure you give them a copy of your receipt to present at Pick Up. Can I have my Colour Fest pack delivered? No, unfortunately this is just not feasible. Pick Up will be available prior to the event, and you can call the school ( ) to arrange another time if need be. Is there a registration cut off, or can I register on the day? We would prefer pre-registration; it saves time on the day, and once the tickets sell out, that s it. Why risk it? And remember to register by 09 October to take advantage of the Early Bird pricing. We have only 500 tickets to sell, so get in early to save money and avoid disappointment. What is included with my Horsham West Colour Fest registration? Runners will receive a registration pack which includes their wristband ticket as entry into this crazy event, a headband (white, naturally, so that you can collect lots of colour!), and a printed copy of this information. Participants will also get a packet of colour as they cross the finish line and, of course, entry to the Colour Party. What do children who are aged 5 or under receive with their free entry? Provided they are accompanied by a participating adult, children who have not yet turned 6 years old are welcome to join in without registering, but as they will receive free entry, they will not be given a Colour Fest pack. However, they are pretty certain to receive a whole lot of colour fun along the way, and if they want some colour of their own to toss around, packets can be purchased for $3 each at the Colour Party. Any refunds? Unfortunately, we cannot issue refunds if you can t participate on the day. Our event will go ahead, rain or shine (a bit of rain isn t a problem, anyway - the colour sticks better to slightly wet clothing, adding to the fun). We will only cancel if extreme adverse weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances make participation dangerous. In this very unlikely event, we will reschedule. If you are in any doubt about the Colour Fest proceeding, check out the Facebook page ( for any last-minute changes. The Horsham West Colour Fest sounds like heaps of fun! How can I help spread the word? We d love you to share the colour fun with as many people as you can. Tell everyone you know - in person, or Like and Share the Colour Fest Facebook page ( or use our hashtag (#horshamwestcolourfest) on your favourite social media. What if I have a question that isn t answered here? Please the school (horsham.west.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au) or send us a message via the Colour Fest Facebook page ( and we will do our best to find you an answer. Any other words of wisdom? Just a few tips and reminders o If you have a small child with you, consider writing your name and contact telephone number on the back of their hand in some kind of indelible ink in case you become separated during the day. o Please follow all directions given by the Colour Fest officials so that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable day. o If you don t want to risk having it come into contact with lots of coloured powder, don t bring it!!! o DO bring your best mood and your biggest grin, and remember to have FUN!!!
