2 Stoptober Campaign 2013 The Trust has made the decision to fully support the Public Health England Stoptober 2013 challenge and will be working with colleagues from Wigan Council Public Health and Bridgewater Community NHS Trust to help both our patients and staff to stop smoking. The immediate objective of the Stoptober Campaign is to encourage patients and staff to give up smoking for a 28 day period in by using a variety of support mechanisms which are available. However, in WWL we will also be using this as a real opportunity to raise the profile of our smoke free policy and to actively challenge and reduce the incidence of smoking at the front of all of the Trusts sites but most especially Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. A small multi disciplinary Task and Finish Group has been established to take this campaign forward with a number of key actions being put in place: WWL confirmed participation in Stoptober 2013 challenge Task & Finish group set up which includes Public Health and Bridgewater NHS Trust Communications Plan agreed Appendix A First communication within August Team Brief First Global sent out week commencing 16 Appendix B Market place stalls manned by Smoking Cessation Teams for each site have been organised Lead Focus article in edition Posters will be widely distributed across the Trust Pay slip notices being arranged Increased security presence at key areas Wigan Council to step up litter enforcement E notice boards to raise awareness in all areas Internet/intranet information available Social media and Trust news Highly visual banners at each site frontage. In addition to the above it has also been suggested that Senior Management with HR support, should support the initiative by taking a more active and visual role in challenging smoking on site and staff non compliant with uniform policy. To support this initiative, it is proposed to hand copies of the letter which was read out at the August Trust Board meeting to any members of staff who are identified to be smoking outside the Trust s main entrances, in order to reinforce the message about the negative impact this has on public and patient impressions of our hospital. This will need to be agreed and organised appropriately. David Evans, Associate Director of Estates & Facilities & Jon Lenney, Director of Human Resources & Organisational Development

5 Appendix B Stoptober 2013 be part of the challenge We are delighted to announce that the Trust will be supporting the Public Health England Stoptober 2013 challenge. All over the country people will take the 28 day challenge to stop smoking during. Last year over 160,000 people successfully quit smoking for Stoptober, thanks to the wide range of quitting support on offer. The key messages from this campaign are: Stoptober is back for the second time encouraging the nation s 8 million smokers to stop smoking for 28 days. If you can stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stay quit. People taking part in Stoptober will be provided with a detailed 28 day step by step programme to support them in their smoke free attempt. For more information and to join the biggest stop smoking challenge of its kind, search Stoptober online or visit smokefree.nhs.uk/stoptober Those who stop smoking for 28 days and longer will begin to experience financial, physical and health benefits. These include better sense of taste and smell and a reduced risk of lung cancer and heart disease. Health Harms: Smoking is the biggest cause of premature death in England. Each year it accounts for over 80,000 deaths with one in two long term smokers dying prematurely from a smoking disease. Stoptober is being supported by a number of nationwide organisations, companies and charities. WWL is working in partnership with Wigan Council Public Health and Bridgewater Community NHS Trust locally to support and promote this initiative. For more information search Stoptober on line or visit or alternatively speak to our local stop smoking service or occupational health team. Further information is on the Smoking Cessation intranet site
