1 2015 Pricing Survey Thank you for participating. Please read all instructions and specifications carefully before completing bid forms. All surveys must be returned by August 17, 2015, to be included in our special pricing report.

2 Welcome to the 2015 Pricing Survey Our readers have told us time and again that pricing correctly is one of their biggest challenges. They constantly find themselves caught between the extremes of pricing work too low to make a reasonable profit and bidding jobs too high to get the work in the first place. Either extreme is bad for business, and this survey is an attempt to deal with that. Results of the 2015 survey will be published in the October 2015 issue of FDMC. Since every job is different, how can you compare your pricing with someone else s? We try to eliminate that variable by having a cross-section of our readership bid on a representative selection of identical jobs. To further add realism and accuracy, all the jobs outlined here are for actual work that has been completed, and the original makers of those projects have provided their bid data. In some cases, we ve reproduced actual shop drawings. We also will have the original makers help analyze the results to further add to the value of the survey. Bid it your way. To provide the most valuable information for you and our readers, we ask that you conscientiously bid each project just as you would in the course of your regular business. We ask for itemized bid information on each bid, and please try to provide that information for comparison purposes even if you don t normally include that information in your calculations. If you would consider other factors or use any special formulas (i.e., cost plus a profit percentage, price-per-foot calculations, etc.), please base your final price on your usual method. For example, if you fill in the itemized information, but your usual method gives you a different price, put your regular price down as the bid price. Please explain any differences in the notes section. You can also use that section to make comments about the job. For example, if the job appears to require different hardware, materials or techniques than you would use, or you have a problem with the design and would suggest changes, please do so. But please comment on what your changes would do to the price. Remember: We will keep your name and your shop name confidential in the final report, we will publish only the name of the state or province from which the bid came. Software/CNC/years in business questions. We want to probe how using computer software affects pricing. A number of readers have also asked us to point out shops using CNC to see if that makes a difference. If you use any software in your bidding/estimating process or you use CNC equipment, please note that on the form. We also would like to know how many years you have been in business to give a better idea of your business experience. Bid what you know. We are sending a full survey package to all bidders regardless of their shop specialties. Projects were selected to be of interest to a majority of the volunteer bidders. Bid on any and all projects that you would feel comfortable bidding on in your own shop. Don t bid on jobs that you are not comfortable with, for whatever reason, unless you can suggest a change to make it work for you. Not everybody does kitchens. Not everybody does furniture or commercial work. The point is, while we want a diversity of projects reflecting the diversity of our readership, we want accurate price estimates. 5 This project sponsored by: Vero Software Cabinet Vision 1. Walnut Transitional Kitchen This Transitional Kitchen features walnut cabinetry with a beaded inset design. Here are the specifications: Walnut cabinetry, uppers and talls to 9 ceiling. Soft close doors and drawers (Grass). Doors---Shaker (1/4 panel) style with a beaded inner edge and 1/8 round over outter edge. Some reeded glass in upper doors. Drawers--Slab with 1/8 round over outer edge and larger drawers are 5 piece to match doors. Details -- Beaded stacked 4 cove crown. Paneled ends. Custom metal corbels under island hangover. Chamfer furniture base around island only. Extras -- Roll outs (6). Pull out double trash (35 qt.). Hardware was included from Top Knobs (roughly $10 each). Finishing was a custom color, stain only, no glaze or distressing, done on-site, clear shot on the inside of cabinets. Installation in town.

Frameless Maple Kitchen This elegant kitchen was done in the European frameless style and was designed with Thermwood's ecabinet software and cut on a ShopBot CNC router. Here are the specifications. Cabinetry -- Structure built from ¾, ½ & ¼ Columbia Forest Products Pure Bond formaldehyde-free prefinished double-sided Maple veneer plywood. Doors & drawer fronts made from 4/4 hard maple select. Base Cabinets- 8 Base Corner- 1 Island Cabinets- 2 Hutch Base-3 Hutch Upper- 3 Upper Cabinets- 6 Upper Corner- 1 Fridge Cabinet- 1 Flush Pantry Cabinet- 2 To be constructed as frameless box construction using interlocking joints, glued & screwed, using ¾ pre-fin-

16 3. Knotty Alder Face-Frame Kitchen This face-frame-style kitchen was done in knotty alder. It features extras such as custom vent hood, two tip-out sink trays, trash bin with 2-50qt cans, 2 square island posts, cookie sheet dividers above the oven, and a series of small functional drawers below cooktop. Doors: Stick and cope raised panel doors, slab drawer fronts with outside edge to match doors. Vitus concealed European hinge 1/2-in. overlay. Drawers: Vitus full extension drawer guides. 20 This project sponsored by: Castle Inc Back Bar Feature Wall This is an unusual commercial project encompassing a back bar feature fall. Based originally on an architect's drawing, the shop that did the work created a 3D computer rendering to work out the job rather than standard shop drawings. According to the original bidder, "This allowed us to determine the exact size of each box including the cuts that overlapped the adjacent box. The 3D drawing, also allowed us to show the lighting to the architect. This showed a few areas where the lights didn t have enough gap to cascade up effectively, and it showed that the TV frame was not high enough." The pricing is only for the maple wall panels, the TV frame and the two-tier liquor bottle display. The flat and the radius section were both divided into two pieces that slipped together in the field. The original shop sent a template so the contractor could lay out the wall to the shop's exact requirements.

Live Edge Table & Bench This live-edge table and bench were created from air dried, local walnut 8/4 slabs bookmatched with hand turned basswood legs constructed with wedged through tenons and finished with mineral oil and beeswax. The original shop worked from a sketch, but they had their draftsperson draw it up in AutoCAD to show here. The piece was popular when displayed at a consumer show prior to delivery earlier this year.

25 6. Mantle Built-In Project This mantle built-in project combines a solid walnut mantle with painted millwork and cabinetry to make an elegant fireplace surround. Here are the basic specifications: ¾ Birch Plywood (U.S. domestic) casework ¼ Beadboard backing Poplar face frames Soft maple doors Concealed hinges 4 ¼ Crown moulding Maple bun Feet Painted white with water-based paint Solid walnut mantelpiece with custom made corbels, stained and lacquered Note: Door pulls and black slate hearth provided by others.
