2 programme Innovative Certificate Programs from UNITAR-NYO and Columbia Law School: Description and Objectives In this groundbreaking series, UNITAR-NYO and the Columbia Law School Mediation Program, with the full backing of Columbia Law School and Columbia University, will deliver the most rigorous, intellectually engaging, interactive, custom programming for United Nations diplomats and change agents around the world. Our individual, day-long courses will leverage Columbia s unparalleled strength in the area of conflict resolution, weaving it in with skills building programming that acknowledges the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals. Participants in these individual, day-long programs will receive Certificates of Attendance signed by top level officials at Columbia University, Columbia Law School, and UNITAR. The programs are designed for delegates at any level, as well as national change agents or other personnel, who wish to achieve mastery of negotiation, mediation and multilateral conflict resolution processes, and implement them toward solving the world s most difficult problems. The Columbia Law School Mediation Clinic, founded more than 20 years ago, is one of the premier mediation programs in the country, both in terms of its domestic impact having mediated thousands of U.S. legal cases, in federal, state and administrative fora and its global reach. For the last decade, the Clinic has worked with transnational organizations like the United Nations, as well as foreign governments, courts and law schools, to advance the practice of mediatio, negotiation and global peacebuilding. 5 programme Structure The Columbia Programs are comprised of eight one-day modules, one per month from September to April. Participants are encouraged to enroll in the entire series of training programs; those who do will be given the opportunity to come to a special invitation-only seminar,with no additional cost, at the Law School with leading conflict resolution, human rights and other academics. 6 Key Features Research shows that experiential learning interactive programs in which participants practice skills linked to theory produces the highest levels of mastery and achievement. 9 Faculty Profiles Professor Alexandra Carter Professor Shawn Watts columbia university columbia university Professor Alexandra Carter is a Clinical Professor of Law and the Director of the Mediation Clinic at Columbia Law School. Since 2012, she also has served as the Law School s Director of Clinical Programs, providing leadership in the area of experiential teaching and learning. Professor Carter s teaching and research interests lie in the field of alternative dispute resolution, primarily in mediation and negotiation. She has been sought as a trainer on mediation, civil procedure, negotiation and dispute systems design for many different groups from private and Professor Shawn Watts is a Citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and is the Associate Director of the Mediation Clinic at Columbia Law School. He has conducted conflict resolution and negotiation trainings for numerous Native American nations located within the United States, as well as for diplomats at the United Nations. He has mediated in the New York City Civil Court, Harlem Small Claims Court, and the Institute for Mediation and Conflict Resolution, and he has public sectors, including the United Nations, the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education, U.S. courts, private corporations including Viacom Inc. and Time Warner, as well as law firms. Internationally, Professor Carter has been invited to address the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Rule of Law Conference, the 5th World Peace Conference in Jakarta, and the Ceará Supreme Court Conference on Mediation; she also has contributed as a faculty speaker at universities in South America, Asia and Europe. Domestically, Professor Carter was elected to the mediation panel for the United States District Court for supervised student mediations in court-related programs in New York City. Mr. Watts developed and teaches a course in Native American Peacemaking, which is a traditional indigenous form of dispute resolution. Multiple Native American tribes have used his peacemaking work to refine their conflict resolution and court systems. Prior to serving as the Associate Director of the Edson Queiroz the Southern District of New York, and serves on mediation leadership boards such as the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee for the New York City Bar Association and the Mediator Ethics Advisory Committee for the New York State Unified Court System. Prior to joining the Columbia faculty, Professor Carter was associated with Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, where she worked as part of a team defending against a multibillion dollar securities class action lawsuit related to the Enron collapse, served as the senior antitrust Foundation Mediation Program at Columbia Law School, Mr. Watts was an associate in the Finance and Bankruptcy practice group at the New York office of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP where, in addition to representing both creditors and debtors in multimillion-dollar bankruptcies, he specialized in Federal Indian Law and tribal finance. Mr. Watts earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. John s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico in He served as the President associate on several multibillion dollar mergers, and handled cases involving copyright law. Professor Carter received her Juris Doctor degree in 2003 from Columbia Law School, where she earned James Kent and Harlan Fiske Stone academic honors. She also won the Jane Marks Murphy Prize for clinical advocacy and the Lawrence S. Greenbaum Prize for the best oral argument in the 2002 Harlan Fiske Stone Moot Court Competition. After earning her degree, Professor Carter clerked for the Hon. Mark L. Wolf, U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts in Boston. of the National Native American Law Students Association and was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar while at Columbia Law School. In addition, he was a Managing Editor of Columbia Law School s Journal of Law and Social Problems. Mr. Watts won the Jane Marks Murphy Prize for clinical advocacy and was a Strine Fellow while he was a student at Columbia Law School. Mr. Watts graduated from Columbia Law School in 2012 and is currently licensed to practice law in New York and New Jersey.
