Gimp 2.6 Gimp is available for: - Windows - Linux - Mac Available for download from: Documentation: Introduction GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) was first released in Many refinements have been made over the years and enhanced versions are released on a regular basis. GIMP is similar in use and functionality to Adobe Photoshop, and includes: A full suite of painting tools including brushes, a pencil, an airbrush, cloning, etc. Sub-pixel sampling for all paint tools for high-quality anti-aliasing. Full Alpha channel support for working with transparency. Layers and channels. Multiple undo/redo. Transformation tools including rotate, scale, shear and flip. Support for a wide range of file formats, including GIF, JPEG, PNG, XPM, TIFF, TGA, MPEG, PS, PDF, PCX, BMP and many others Selection tools, including rectangle, ellipse, free, fuzzy, bezier and intelligent scissors. Plug-ins that allow for the easy addition of new file formats and new effect filters.

Toolbox Options

Double-click on any icon in the Toolbox to set parameters for that tool. For further detailed information on the Tools, see: Colour, Indicator and Active Image area This area sits below the Tools area. These icons are optional and can be set in Preferences > Toolbox They show current foreground/background colour, currently selected brush, pattern or gradient, and a thumbnail of the active image. Clicking on these icons allows the corresponding item to be changed.

Dockable Dialogues These are optional icons than can be added as tabs in the dockable area of the Toolbox for frequently used options. It is common to place the Layers, Paths and Channels dialog tabs here. Basic Concepts GIMP can handle three different colour modes: RGB, Indexed and Grayscale. The Indexed colour mode uses a colour map, where all used colours on the image are indexed. A GIF file is an example of an indexed mode. For maximum flexibility all operations within GIMP should be carried out in RGB Mode. To check or change Mode, select Image > Mode. The native file format when saving a file from GIMP is XCF. This should always be used to save an incomplete image, since it saves all information, including layers, paths, channels, and settings. This information is lost when saving a finished image in a format such as JPG, PNG or GIF. Layers An image with Layers is like a sheaf of transparent films stacked one on top of the other, with a sheet of paper at the bottom level. Channels A Channel is a single component of a pixel's colour, i.e. Red, Green, Blue and sometimes transparency (Alpha channel). Colours RGB colour is also referred to as 24-bit colour. 8 bits are assigned to each of the three colours, so each colour value can range from 0 to 255. This produces 16 million colour combinations. e.g. Red = 255, 0, 0 or ff0000 in hex, Green = 0, 255, 0 or 00ff00 in hex. Selection A Selection is a region of the active layer that you can work on without affecting the unselected areas. The selected area is visually identified by a moving dashed line, referred to as the marching ants

A simple example demonstrating layers Open a new image with a white background, Create a new transparent layer and use the Rectangle tool to create a basic shape. The shape can be moved and dragged to change size or position: Click on the Foreground Colour icon and change to Red (255, 0, 0):

Paint the rectangle in Red with the Bucket Fill tool. Create another transparent layer and paint an overlapping Green circle, using the Circle and Bucket Fill tools: The layer dialogue should now look like this: The order of the upper layers can now be moved, or the individual layers turned on and off. Layers allow different objects to be moved and transformed independently of other elements in the image.

Red layer moved to top: A further illustration of how layers work:

Create Colour Wheels with GIMP Create new image window (640x480). Open Layers Palette in Dock. Duplicate Background and turn off lower layer. Create a Circle object. Create Alpha Channel: Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. Choose Select > Invert then hit Delete. Choose Select > None. Duplicate circle layer twice to create three layers. Move the circles so they are overlapping:

Select each layer in turn and fill circles with the 3 primary colours: Duplicate the three layers, place the duplicates in the same order, and make the second set invisible:

Make Background visible and change each of the visible layers to Subtractive Mode. The Complementary colours are now shown (CMYK), with the Primary Colours in the overlapping areas. This is known as a Subtractive colour mixing. Change the three visible layers to Addition Mode, and then make the 3 duplicate layers visible. Duplicate the Background and change to Black. The 3 Primary Colours are then shown, with the Complementary Colours in the overlapping areas. This is known as an Additive colour mixing.

From the preceding, it can be seen that the colour Cyan can be created by 1. subtracting Red from White or 2. adding Blue and Green CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) is the mode used in printing. These are the colours in the ink cartridges in a colour printer. It is also the mode used in painting and explains the colour of objects around us, where light is reflected, not emitted. Objects absorb part of the light waves and we see only the reflected part. Creating a Logo using GIMP Make a Logo using File > Create > Logos Try Starscape, Neon, Glossy, Frosty, Chip Away, Chrome, and Alien Glow. Enter the text for the logo and try varying the default parameters. e.g. Starscape: Frosty:

Chrome: Further examples using GIMP Gimp has no drawing tools as such. To draw an ellipse, circle or rectangle, create the shape then choose Edit > Stroke Selection, changing the Line Width of the Stroke Line accordingly. (To create vector graphics (scalable drawings) the open source program Inkscape is recommended. It is similar in functionality to Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw.) To combine layers, choose Layer > Merge Down to merge the current layer with the one below. To merge all layers, choose Image > Flatten Image. Images will be flatted automatically if exporting to a standard image format, e.g. JPG. Straight Lines Select drawing tool (Pencil, Brush or Ink Tool). Click at start position. Hold Shift and click at end of line position. Drop Shadow Create some Text. Choose Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow.

Convert Part of a Photo to B&W Open the photo image and create a duplicate layer. Add Alpha Channel using Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. Select the upper layer. Choose Colors > Desaturate. Erase the area to be coloured. Example: To create a simulated oil painting from a photo: Choose Filters > Artistic > Oilify (mask 25)

Paths (Bézier Curves) Use Path Tool. Click to place nodes then drag lines to create smooth curves. Choose Select Path to close the path, or hold Ctrl and click on first point. To draw a line following the path, choose Edit > Stroke Path. When the dialog pops up, select Stroke with Paint Tool > Paintbrush for smoothest lines. Exercise As an exercise, attempt to re-create this image of Wilbur, the Gimp mascot:

Gradients A simple gradient is a smooth transition in colour from the foreground colour to the background colour along the length of a path created by dragging the mouse across the screen, e.g. More complex gradients can be made by using different blend shapes (e.g. spiral) and various patterns, a number of which can be selected from the Blend (Gradient) dialog, e.g.

Gradients can be used to create perspective shading with light coming from a particular direction. A more Complex Example using Layer Masks This exercise will create a desktop wallpaper. The method allows change of background colour while preserving the pattern. Create an image the same size as your desktop. Fill with blue. Create a new Layer in Transparent mode. Set Foreground colour to White, background to Black. Set Layer Mode to Addition. Select Gradient Tool with shape set to radial. Create a gradient from top left. Adjust Opacity to taste. Create another new layer in Transparent mode. Set Mode to Overlay. Select Gradient Tool with shape set to bilinear. Create gradient from centre downwards. Adjust Opacity. Set foreground to Black, background to White. Create a new layer in Background mode. This changes the visible image to white (background colour). Set Layer Mode to Overlay and adjust opacity. Select Paths tool. Make a random curved shape. In the Paths tab, choose Path to Selection. In Layers tab, right-click Add Layer Mask, set to Selection (makes selected area opaque). Choose Select > None and exit Paths tool. (In a Layer Mask, Black is transparent and White is fully opaque).

Repeat above 3 steps a few times. Now create some random large arcs as narrow white lines. Select Ellipse tool, with Aspect Ratio 1:1 (i.e. a circle). Select > Border 1px wide. Add a new New Layer with Fill Type set to Background. Change Layer Mode to Overlay and adjust the opacity. Add Layer Mask, set to Selection. Repeat the above 2 steps a few times. The end result should be a wallpaper similar to this: Enjoy being creative with Gimp!
