How to Find Your Placement Business School Placement Unit
BUSINESS PLACEMENT UNIT Telephone: Placements are 12 month periods of employment that students undertake after their second year of university. Doing a placement means that you leave university not just with a degree, but also with relevant professional experience. Now is a great time to do a placement. There are lots of opportunities out there and with the support of the Business School Placement Unit it is a very achievable goal. Whether you want to work for a global bank, a quirky marketing agency or public sector organisation there will be a role to suit you. This guide gives an overview of the how and whys of doing a placement. More detailed information on how to secure a placement is available on our unilearn site: sbus-placements or call in to ask any questions you don t need an appointment We look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your goals. Placement Unit, BS1/28, The Business School, University of Huddersfield, Queensgate, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD1 3DH businessplacements@hud.ac.uk Telephone: Hud Bus Placement Students and Graduates 2
THE BENEFITS OF DOING A PLACEMENT Make your CV stand out from the crowd Increased competition for graduate careers means it is important to stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs. Employers are demanding more from new recruits and experience is seen as being as important as your degree. Help and support all the way We have a dedicated placement unit that will give you all the support and advice you need and teach you how to succeed in a competitive jobs market Earn Money The majority of work placements are paid; this provides a valuable opportunity to bring in essential funds to support your study. Salaries range from 9K - 20K for the year. Test your career choices A placement can offer you the opportunity to test whether or not your preferred career is really for you. Networking and entry into the graduate job market Doing a placement can identify graduate jobs that may not be advertised on the open market. Many firms offer graduate jobs to students who have already undertaken work experience with them and have shown the skills and commitment they are looking for. Motivation for your final year Many placement students return to university more motivated following their placement. This is often due to students becoming used to a more structured work pattern and being more motivated towards their chosen career. In % of students who had completed a placement year graduate with a 1 st or 2:1 degree. Put your knowledge into practice Undertaking work experience in a field related to your course of study can offer the opportunity to transfer theoretical knowledge into practical experience. Work with a variety of people Work experience provides you with the chance to learn from experienced professionals. 3
PLACEMENT OPTIONS There are a wide variety of placement opportunities open to you: 1. Placements with high profile employers Most large, UK employers offer some form of placement scheme. Business school students have been offered placements with firms including: IBM, Rolls Royce, PWC, Boots, Unilever, L Oreal and Cummins. Most big firms now use placements as a feeder for their graduate training schemes. 2. Placements with regional employers For those who want to stay in Yorkshire, we advertise lots of opportunities with businesses in Huddersfield and other parts of the region. These roles tend to be advertised from January onwards. 3. Placements in the public and voluntary sector Not all placements are with commercial businesses. Last year, we offered numerous placements within the NHS, local councils, universities and various charities. 4. Placements with small businesses If you would prefer to work for a smaller business, we offer placements within local SMEs, which can offer great variety and responsibility. 5. Overseas placements There are opportunities to spend your placement year experiencing another country. We ve had placements in the USA, Caribbean, Asia and throughout the EU. 6. Running your own business If you want to test your entrepreneurial skills, the University s Enterprise team can provide resources and support for you to set up your own business as a placement. This is a unique opportunity to test a business idea, with the aid of an experienced team, and see if selfemployment could be suited to you. 4
10 STEPS TO PLACEMENT SUCCESS 1. Start by preparing your CV using the hand-out from the placement unit or attend one of the CV writing sessions run by the Placement Unit or Careers Service. Bring a copy of your CV to the placement office (BS1/28) for advice and feedback. We prefer to meet you in person. It might take 2 or 3 visits to get it right. We are open 9am 5pm Mon- Friday, you don t need an appointment. 2. Once your CV has been given the OK we will send you access to the eplacements website where we advertise vacancies. You also need to complete a Placement Planning Form so we know what you are interested in doing. 3. You also need a Linked-in profile, the placement unit can advise on this it is easy to do. Once you have a profile join the Hud Bus Placement Student group as we post updates regularly here. 4. The placement unit will advise on the types of role that could suit. You are not limited by the course you are studying and can apply for any role that interests you. As well as looking on eplacements use websites like ratemyplacement. 5. If you have limited experience or not confident about your skills it is advisable to gain some short term experience to make you more competitive. The Placement Unit can help you identify such roles. 6. On average students apply for 15 placements and attend 4 interviews before securing their placement it can take longer. By working with the staff in the Placement Unit you will save time and avoid making unnecessary mistakes. 7. As well as applying for placements you should make an effort to attend some of the employer presentations and networking events we run and attend the placements fair in December. These events give you the chance to find out more about employers and make a good impression in person this makes a difference. 8. When you have been offered a placement make sure you let the placement unit know so we can complete the necessary paperwork. We will then send you an explaining the steps you need to take and also provide you with a pack of information for you and your employer. 9. Around May time you need to attend a pre-placement presentation which covers essential information on passing the placement year. 10. Above all else, what you need to secure a placement is resilience. If you stick at it, work with us and are flexible about where you apply you will secure a placement. 5
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS There are some great placement opportunities out there and almost certainly a role suitable for all types of student. There is also lots of competition and getting a placement requires effort and determination, but it s worth it The following points are things you can do to boost your chances of success: 1. Experience. The more experience you have on your CV the more you can sell yourself. Every student looking for a placement can get some volunteering experience in a relevant role. Getting involved in activities around university also looks good as employers want people who get involved and have a team mind-set. A part-time job alone tends not to be enough to impress most employers, so get involved and take up opportunities to make you stand out. 2. Boost your skills. Most placement roles will require the use of IT skills. We can advise on what software and skills are required for certain roles, and we can suggest how you can develop these. 3. Make use of all the support available. You have a dedicated placement unit that offers support and practice with interviews, assessment centres and other parts of the application process. Make use of us and you will improve. 4. Keep an open mind. The more flexible you are about where you will go to do a placement, the more opportunities there are. Don t limit yourself. 5. Be determined. Our view is that if you are good enough to win a place at university then you are good enough to get a placement but don t expect it to be easy. You should be prepared for some disappointments along the way, and you need to be determined. 6
WHERE TO LOOK FOR PLACEMENTS 1. EPlacements. The Business School has its own system for advertising and managing placement opportunities. The system is called eplacements and can only be accessed by year 2 business school students. You need to register with us and upload an approved copy of your CV. The site advertises a wide range of opportunities, many of which are exclusive to the University of Huddersfield. You can access eplacements via the web at hhtp://halo.hud.ac.uk/eplacements. A comprehensive guide to eplacements is on the unilearn site. Last year, over 600 placement opportunities were advertised on eplacements. 2. RATEMYPLACEMENT.co.uk We work in partnership with RateMyPlacement, who advertise most of the big national placement schemes. Positions on this site can be accessed by any student, so competition is high, but they are often well-paid and prestigious. Look to register with RateMyPlacement as early as you can. 3. Company websites Many employers advertise their placements on their own website. If there is a particular company you want to work for, look on the careers section of their website and also think about following them on twitter. 4. Other vacancy sites There are lots of other sites which advertise placements. You can download a list from unilearn, or pick up a copy from the placement unit. 7
OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU In the Business School we want to see as many students as possible securing placements. Here is a summary of what the placement unit offers: 1. Help identifying the right placement for you. If you re unsure about what you d like to do we can help to identify your strengths and suitable placement options. 2. Help checking CVs, cover letters and application forms. There is no reason to send out poor applications we are here to make sure you get them right. 3. Practice Interviews and assessment centres. You can book a mock interview to help you prepare for placement interviews; you ll get feedback on how to improve and gain confidence. We also run regular practice assessment centres. 4. Lots of Opportunities. The Business School has been offering placements for many years and we have built up contacts with lots of businesses, who offer placement roles. We are always looking for new opportunities for our students. 5. Regular workshops and employer presentations. We run short workshops to help with areas such as: interview preparation, selling yourself, creating a great CV and placements overseas. We also invite employers to give presentations about their organisations and opportunities they have. 6. Placement Fair. Each year, we hold a Placement Fair to allow you to meet employers. The 2016 Placement Fair is scheduled for December 14 th. 7. Experience. The placement unit is staffed by people who are experienced in recruitment and selection. We know what employers are looking for and it is our job to prepare you to be successful. 8. Continued Support. Once you start your placement, you will have the support of the placement unit and you ll be allocated a tutor, who ll visit you. 8
