All assignments are hard copy handed in on due dates as directed by the class calendar. NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED FOR THIS CLASS NO EXTRA CREDIT WORK IS GIVEN IN THIS CLASS. **CELL PHONES: This classroom is a cell-phone-free zone, meaning phones are not visible or audible from the time you cross the threshold, even if you arrive to class early. Also, because we darken the room to show films every day, lighted screens will distract and disturb others, so students will demonstrate selfdiscipline and show respect to others by turning off cell phones as they enter the classroom and will not check for messages, etc. during class. Arrivals and departures: Class begins and ends on time; please arrive on time, stay until the end and actively contribute to group discussions. If for any reason you arrive after class has started or must leave before it is over, you must enter and exit using the back door. Do not cross through the front of class once class has begun.

Course Description This is a survey course of Theatrical Dance as Art in the Western World; it examines the history and diversity of the people, cultures and events that led to the development of Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Dance in Film and Musical Theatre Dance. MySJSU Messaging You are responsible for keeping your information up to date with the messaging system through MySJSU to learn of any class updates. Course Goals and Learning Objectives GE Learning Outcomes (GELO) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Recognize aesthetic qualities and processes that characterize works of the human intellect and imagination (observation of classes, rehearsals and performances) Respond to works of art both analytically and affectively (with testing and written observation essays and through other forms of personal and artistic expression) Write clearly and effectively (formal and informal writing of rehearsal and performance observations) Course Learning Outcomes Courses in the Arts should give students knowledge and understanding of significant works of human intellect and imagination. Students will examine the interaction of analytical and creative processes in the production and perception of such works, and the significance of the historical and cultural context in which the works are created and interpreted. Courses should enable students to participate in social and cultural communities associated with artistic and literary endeavors, enriching their personal and professional lives.

3 Upon successful completion of this program: 1. The students will be able to understand the historical evolution of Western Theatrical dance. 2. The students will be able to understand how Western Theatrical dance reflects the society that produces it, and how the history of this dance has been shaped by the contributions of men, women and societies from a diversity of cultures. 3. The students will be able to recognize the aesthetic elements in a variety of dance styles. 4. The students will be able to analyze, interpret and evaluate dance performance. 5. The students will become knowledgeable audience members for dance performances. 6. The e-book version is available at: Course Requirements and Assignments SJSU classes are designed such that in order to be successful, it is expected that students will spend a minimum of forty-five hours for each unit of credit (normally three hours per unit per week), including preparing for class, participating in course activities, completing assignments, and so on. More details about student workload can be found in University Policy S12-3 at Tests (40% of final grade)three tests assess the student s understanding of the historical evolution of Western Theatrical Dance, the responsibilities of the dancers, choreographers and audience, and how the history of dance has been shaped by the contributions of people from diverse cultures. 10% Test over Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 11 10% Test over Chapters 10 and 6 20% Final Exam over Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12 Attend Performances (20% of final grade) these assignments help the student recognize the aesthetic elements in a variety of dance styles, analyze, interpret and evaluate dance performances, and become a knowledgeable audience member for dance performances. 20% attend two live performances (10% each). These are specific concerts assigned for you. A separate handout will give you specific dates and method for receiving credit for attendance to these concerts.

4 Writing (20% of final grade) the following assignments allow the student to respond to works of art both analytically and affectively and to write clearly and effectively. GE writing guidelines are to be followed and are included with this syllabus. A specific writing format will be provided. The observations are required to prepare for this written assignment. Being present and observing dancers create their art helps students become knowledgeable audience members, and to learn to appreciate art forms that are unfamiliar, (10%) written response to youtube viewing of a specifically assigned performance. Due date is on the class calendar. (10%) Written paper which compares and contrasts the live viewing of a rehearsal with a live viewing of a dance technique class. Due date is on the class calendar. Observe one hour of one rehearsal of either the University Dance Theatre (UDT) or the Choreography III class. A rehearsal schedule will be provided. This observation becomes half of the foundation for one of your written assignments. Due date is on the class calendar. Observe one SJSU dance technique class in its entirety. A full class schedule will be provided. This observation becomes half of the foundation for one of your written assignments. Due date is on the class calendar. Quizzes (20% of total grade) You will have four quizzes, one on each of the IRC viewing assignments. Each Quiz is worth 5% of your grade. ) These viewing assignments help the student recognize the aesthetic elements in a variety of dance styles, analyze, interpret and evaluate dance performances, and become a knowledgeable audience member for dance performances. Grading Percentage Breakdown 94% and above = A 93% - 90% = A- 89% - 87% = B+ 86% - 84% = B 83% - 80% = B- 79% - 77% = C+ 76% - 74% = C 73% - 70% = C- 69% - 67% = D+ 66% - 64% = D 63% - 60% = D- Below 60% = F Computer Use: In the classroom students are allowed to use computers only for class-related activities. Common courtesy and professional behavior dictate that you notify someone when you are recording him/her. You must obtain the instructor s permission to make audio or video recordings in this class. Such permission allows the recordings to be used for your private, study purposes only. The recordings are the intellectual property of the instructor; you have not been given any rights to reproduce or distribute the material. Attendance at the required dance concerts require the use of a punch card. Any punch used on this card which is not the official punch is considered cheating and will result in a failing grade and sanctions by the University. All Writing Specialists have gone through a rigorous hiring process, and they are well trained to assist all students at all levels within all disciplines to become better writers. Learning Assistance Resource Center The Peer Mentor Center is located on the 1 st floor of Clark Hall in the Academic Success Center.
