3 January 27th is Family Literacy Day Be sure to find time to read as a family. Fifteen minutes of reading a day can make a difference in developing children s learning skills and improving their chances for success. Quotable Quote You may have tangible wealth untold: Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I, you can never be I had a mother who read to me. Strickland Gillian Why Your Baby Loves Rhymes and Songs When your baby is born, he is ready for interaction. He loves to see, hear and be touched by you. When your baby is awake and alert, she notices your face and your voice. Use rhymes and songs to show her how much fun language is. Your baby will love to hear the same song or rhyme over and over. Share the fun, hugs and giggles. Literacy Tips and Ideas for Parents Use family photos and cree a story book with your child. Let your family see you reading. Kids learn by example. Sing with your children. Visit the library or Hub regularly. Follow a recipe and cook/bake with your child. Do laundry together. Let your child helps sort the dirty laundry into darks, lights, etc. Clean laundry: mch socks and sort which clothes belong to which member of the family. Count the number of jumping jacks you both can do. Put some snow in the sink, add some spoons, cups, toys and talk about wh happens to the snow when it warms up. Everyone can be a Storyteller Storytelling helps preschoolers learn new words and get ready to become readers and writers. To further this learning home, invite your child to tell stories to you and other family members. Here are some suggestions: Share wh happened while on an errand Any daily event can become a story if a child wants to tell it. A trip to the grocery store can become a search to find the bread. After she tells this story, join in by becoming one of the characters. The bread is in aisle 10. Do you want whole whe or pumpernickel? Plan for and describe important events Meeting new neighbors or going to the dentist can be gre topics for a story. After explaining wh might happen, invite your child to turn it into a story. Ler he can revise the story to include wh actually happened. The dentist put a paper bib around my neck. A story can help your child know wh to expect and recall how brave he was. Publish the story Write down your child s story and offer crayons so she can illustre it. a scanned copy to friends and family. Provide simple props so you can act out the story together.
