2 Merseyside Sports Partnership values the commitment made by clubs and coaches, leaders and volunteers in supporting sport and physical activity across Merseyside. High quality clubs and enthusiastic coaches, leaders and volunteers provide our communities with a range of opportunities to enjoy sport at all levels and for all abilities. The aim of this programme is to: Outline the courses organised that support individual coaches, leaders and volunteers in order to develop or enhance their skills and knowledge. Detail the courses that are available to assist clubs in achieving their goals when working towards or maintaining recognised accreditation standards such as Clubmark and those of the National Governing Bodies of sport. 2

4 Get Qualified - Qualification Bundle High quality coaches, leaders and volunteers with the skills, knowledge and expertise - combined with the motivation, commitment and enthusiasm are fundamental to providing sporting opportunities and making a difference across Merseyside. Merseyside Sports Partnership recognises that becoming qualified and gaining the skills and knowledge to develop and progress, requires a significant commitment. In order to help ease the financial burden on individuals and voluntary clubs, Merseyside Sports Partnership has introduced a qualification bundle: Three Course Discount Book any three courses organised directly by Merseyside Sports Partnership and receive a discount of 20 on the total cost. In order to take advantage of our qualification bundle, the three courses must be booked at the same time with Merseyside Sports Partnership. Please see our How to Book section on page 17 for more information. 4

5 Safeguarding and Protecting Children Target Audience: UKCC Level 1 and 2 coaches, leaders and volunteers working with children. This workshop is a recommended Minimum Standard for Deployment requirement for National Governing Bodies of Sport and other key employers in the sport and active leisure sector. It constitutes part of the basic standards a coach needs to be able to carry out their role safely and effectively. It can be delivered to all those responsible for organising children's sport (e.g. within governing bodies of sport, local authorities, sports and leisure centres, and sports clubs) and those who lead or deliver children s sport programmes (e.g. coaches, leaders, instructors, development officials, administrators, volunteers and parents), an estimated 76% of whom undertake these roles on a voluntary basis. Workshop Summary: The workshop aims to increase the awareness of safeguarding and protecting children and help coaches to recognise possible signs of abuse and deal sensitively and effectively with issues that arise. It also prompts a review of practice to ensure that sport provides a positive and enriching experience for children, and that coaches behaviours is always above reproach. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to: Identify and recognise good coaching practice and the implications for their coaching. Explore their values and feelings in relation to child abuse and recognise their potential impact on their response. Recognise and respond to possible signs of child abuse. 6 How to Coach Disabled People in Sport Target Audience: UKCC Level 1 and 2 coaches, leaders and volunteers working with disabled people. This workshop is a recommended Minimum Standard for Deployment requirement for National Governing Bodies of Sport and other key employers in the sport and active leisure sector. It can be delivered to all those responsible for organising sport (e.g. within governing bodies of sport, local authorities, sport and leisure centres, sports clubs) and those who lead or deliver sport programmes (e.g. coaches, leaders, instructors, development officials, administrators, volunteers, parents) Workshop Summary: This workshop aims to answer all the commonly asked questions about disabled participants in sport and how to set up coaching sessions to suit their needs. It gives advice on how to plan a session or make minor adjustments to the way you work, to make your coaching more effective. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to: Determine how to include disabled people in sport. Select appropriate coaching activities. Create effective coaching environments. 7 Coaching Children and Young People Target Audience: UKCC Level 1, 2 & 3 coaches working with children and young performers. Workshop Summary: This workshop includes essential information on physical growth, social and emotional development, early skill learning and presenting the information in a practical and usable manner. It also covers how to adapt your coaching style to individual needs and different stages of development, and how to deal with a variety of different situations. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to: Explain and identify why children and young participants take part in sport and plan and deliver sessions to meet their needs. Match their coaching to meet the developmental stages of children and young people. Plan and deliver coaching sessions that will maximise learning and enjoyment. Follow good practice when coaching children and young people. Cost: 30 Date: 26 th November 2014 Venue: Greenbank Sports Academy, Greenbank Lane, Aigburth, L17 1AG 7

8 Emergency First Aid for Sports Coaches Target Audience: The workshop is a recommended Minimum Standard for Deployment requirement for National Governing Bodies of Sport and other key employers in the sport and active leisure sector. Workshop Summary: The course contains content of a practical and functional nature, given this, participants should be in good general health. Participants should appreciate that the course contains practical components where they will work with other course members. By the end of this workshop coaches will have covered the following: Unconscious Casualty Primary Checks - A,B, C. Recovery Position. Chest Compressions. Rescue Breaths. Conscious Casualty Choking. Shock Heart Conditions. Major Bleeding. 9 Equity in Your Coaching Target Audience: UKCC Level 1 and 2 coaches, leaders and volunteers looking to ensure their sessions are inclusive. This workshop is a recommended Minimum Standard for Deployment requirement for National Governing Bodies of Sport and other key employers in the sport and active leisure sector. It can be delivered to all those responsible for organising sport (e.g. within governing bodies of sport, local authorities, sports and leisure centres, sports clubs) and those who lead or deliver sport programmes (e.g. coaches, leaders, instructors, development officials, administrators, volunteers, parents) Workshop Summary: This workshop is designed to assist current or future coaches in becoming more aware of the barriers many people face in taking part in sport. Everyone should have access to sport regardless of gender, age, race, ability, faith or sexual orientation. As a coach, you have an important role to play in ensuring this happens. The workshop will help you to apply and extend your existing skills to meet the needs of present and potential participants. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to: Explain what equity means and why it is important. Identify barriers to participation. Use appropriate language and terminology. Identify and challenge inequitable behaviour. Interpret the legal framework that affects coaching. Identify how they can become more equitable. Establish where to go for further information. 10 Analysing Your Coaching Target Audience: UKCC Level 2 coaches, or coaches working towards Level 2, wanting to develop and understand the processes involved in analysing coaching practices. Workshop Summary: By the end of this workshop, coaches should be able to reflect upon their own coaching and identify their current strengths and weaknesses in relation to the varied and different coaching situations inherent to coaching practice; for example, the selection of appropriate coaching methods. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to: Analyse their own performance against a checklist to identify areas of strength. Recognise the different behaviours they exhibit in their coaching. Devise and implement an action plan to change aspects of their own coaching behaviour where necessary. Monitor any improvements in their coaching practice. Select appropriate coaching. Modify practice across a number of different coaching situations. 11 An Introduction to FUNdamentals of Movement Target Audience: UKCC Level 1 and 2 coaches. Recommendations for this workshop are for coaches to have attended the An Introduction to Long-term Athlete Development workshop or be familiar with the LTAD player pathways in their chosen sport. Workshop Summary: This practical workshop explores the concepts of Agility, Balance and Co-ordination and speed (the ABC s). It compliments other coach education resources which may focus on the movement skills of running, hopping, skipping etc. This workshop assists coaches to observe, analyse and coach good movement patterns within their sessions whether multi skill or sport specific. By the end of this workshop session coaches will be familiar with the fundamental concepts related to agility, balance, co-ordination and speed: Agility dynamic stability, starting and stopping, momentum, acceleration and rhythm. Balance establishing a stable core, static stability, exploring the centre of gravity and base of support. Co-ordination related to disassociating body parts and the co-ordination of explosive actions including jumping, throwing, striking and kicking. 12 FUNdamentals of Balance Target Audience: Coaches and teachers qualified to at least UKCC Level 2. Participants should have some prior knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the principles of FUNdamentals of movement skills. It is recommended that workshop participants have attended one or more of the following sports coach UK workshops or an equivalent course: An Introduction to Long term Athletic Development An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement Workshop Summary: Balance is the ability to maintain the centre of gravity of a body within the base of support. Keeping balance requires the integration of inputs from multiple senses (i.e. sight, touch and hearing). This workshop and its supporting resource will provide an opportunity to explore the FUNdamentals of Balance and give practical solutions to accelerate its development within children. The workshop builds on the knowledge previously gained from the An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement workshop and looks at the individual component of Balance in more detail. It also builds on the development and enhancement of observational techniques and skills. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to: Introduce and identify the specific principles of Balance in more detail within various stages of activity. Develop skills of observation, evaluation and intervention to improve balance. Learn, develop and apply approaches to improve participants movement skills with sport-specific techniques. 13 FUNdamentals of Coordination Target Audience: Coaches and teachers qualified to at least UKCC Level 2. Participants should have some prior knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the principles of FUNdamentals of movement skills. It is recommended that workshop participants have attended one or more of the following sports coach UK workshops or an equivalent course: An Introduction to Long-term Athlete Development An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement FUNdamentals of Balance Workshop Summary: Coordination is the ability to execute a movement smoothly and accurately. This involves the bodily senses (i.e. sight, touch, hearing), muscular contractions and joint movements. Everything we do requires the ability to coordinate our limbs to achieve a successful outcome from walking to hopping or throwing to catching. This workshop and its supporting resource will provide an opportunity to explore the FUNdamentals of Coordination and give practical solutions to accelerate its development within children. The workshop builds on the knowledge previously gained from the An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement workshop and looks at the individual component of Coordination in more detail. It also builds on the development and enhancement of observational techniques and skills. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to: Introduce and identify the specific principles of Coordination in more detail within various stages of activity. Develop skills of observation, evaluation and intervention to improve coordination. Learn, develop and apply approaches which improve participants movement skills with sport specific techniques. 14 FUNdamentals of Agility Target Audience: Coaches and teachers qualified to at least UKCC Level 2. Participants should have some prior knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the principles of FUNdamentals of movement skills. It is recommended that workshop participants have attended one or more of the following sports coach UK workshops, or an equivalent course: An Introduction to Long-term Athlete Development An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement FUNdamentals of Balance FUNdamentals of Coordination Workshop Summary: Agility is the ability to rapidly change the body s position efficiently and effectively requiring a combination of balance and coordination. Within sport, agility is the response to stimuli (i.e. an opposing player approaching or a moving target). This workshop and its supporting resource will provide an opportunity to explore the FUNdamentals of Agility and give practical solutions to accelerate its development within children. The workshop builds on the knowledge previously gained from the An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement workshop and looks at the individual component of Agility in more detail. It also builds on the development and enhancement of observational techniques and skills. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to: Introduce and identify the specific principles of Agility in more detail within various stages of activity. Develop skills of observation, evaluation and intervention to improve agility. Learn, develop and apply approaches to improve participants movement skills with sport-specific techniques. 15 Funding Updates, Advice & Support Four times a year, Merseyside Sports Partnership compiles and distributes a Funding Update Newsletter. This outlines funding resources and opportunities available to support clubs, organisations, coaches and performers. Funding Searches The MSP Core Team can also carry out a bespoke search of available funding opportunities to meet your specific needs. If you would like us to undertake a funding search for you or your club please complete and submit our online form: Funding Applications / Bid Writing Support As a Core Team of sports development professionals, we have considerable experience in the preparation of funding applications, development plans and writing bids for sports projects. 16 Coaching Merseyside Merseyside Sports Partnership aims to develop Coaching Merseyside in order that it will become the one stop shop for coaches and leaders who are looking to develop and progress further. Through signing up to Coaching Merseyside you will become a member of a virtual network of sport coaches and leaders. In becoming a member of this network you will: Be able to build a profile of coaching activity recording placements undertaken, qualifications achieved and hours delivered. Receive information on specific coaching support and development opportunities available personalised to the needs identified in your profile. Be notified of bursary schemes and other funding opportunities, Be notified of job opportunities in Merseyside and the North West. By joining this virtual network you will also help Merseyside Sports Partnership, and our partners, to better understand your coaching needs. 16
