1 May the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen Ray & Anne Ortlund tell the following story: Toad baked some cookies. "These cookies smell very good," said Toad. He ate one. "And they taste even better," he said. Toad ran to Frog's house. "Frog, Frog," cried Toad, " Taste these cookies that I have made." Frog ate one of the cookies, "These are the best cookies I have ever eaten!" said Frog. Frog and Toad ate many cookies, one after another. "You know, Toad," said Frog, with his mouth full, "I think we should stop eating. We will soon be sick." "You are right," said Toad. "Let us eat one last cookie, and then we will stop." Frog and Toad ate one last cookie. There were many cookies left in the bowl. "Frog," said Toad, "let us eat one very last cookie, and then we will stop." Frog and Toad ate one very last cookie. "We must stop eating!" cried Toad as he ate another. "Yes," said Frog, reaching for a cookie, "we need willpower." "What is willpower?" asked Toad. "Willpower is trying hard not to do something you really want to do," said Frog. "You mean like trying hard not to eat all these cookies?" asked Toad. "Right," said Frog. Frog put the cookies in a box. "There," he said. "Now we will not eat any more cookies." "But we can open the box," said Toad. "That is true," said Grog. Frog tied some string around the box. "There," he said. "Now we will not eat any more cookies." "But we can cut the string and open the box." said Toad. "That is true," said Frog. Frog got a ladder. He put the box up on a high shelf. "There," said Frog. "Now we will not eat any more cookies." "But we can climb the ladder and take the box down from the shelf and cut the string and open the box," said Toad. "That is true," said Frog. Frog climbed the ladder and took the box down from the shelf.
2 He cut the string and opened the box. Frog took the box outside. He shouted in a loud voice. "Hey, birds, here are cookies!" Birds came from everywhere. They picked up all the cookies in their beaks and flew away. "Now we have no more cookies to eat," said Toad sadly. "Not even one." "Yes," said Frog, "but we have lots and lots of willpower." "You may keep it all, Frog," said Toad. "I am going home to bake a cake." This story reminds me of last weekend at the youth event. When one of our youth was eating from a bag of pretzels; one after another. Finally, when she realized she was full, but still couldn t stop eating the pretzels, She said, take this bag from me I laughed because I do the same thing all the time. I can t help myself, so I hand the item to my husband Tim and say, take this from me Sometimes when I am feeling particularly unable to restrain myself, I say, hide this from me But in the end, it never works, because I either find it, or move on to my next obsession, and start the process all over again. Willpower They tell us that it just takes willpower! Sounds simple enough.. But if what Martin Luther tells us is true, we humans don t have any willpower. He says that our wills have been damaged, And because of that damage we are unable to control ourselves. We are unable to deprive ourselves of the things that we want. And often, what we want, has nothing to do with God. The story was about food.now, food might not be your issue, but that doesn t mean you don t have an issue. We all have our temptations. We all find ourselves in times when we can t help ourselves We all have times when we can t seem to control our wants, And often, what we want, has nothing to do with God. The first commandment is to love God above all else. who among us actually does that? Love God above our things..above ourselves all the time?! Not one of us is able to do it.
3 The truth is that if we rely on our willpower, we are in big trouble. The truth is our WILL POWER WON T. Do you remember what the Apostle Paul said? (the apostle Paul who was the mission developer for most of the early church, (The apostle Paul who turned his entire life upside down to follow the Risen Christ) He said, I know what I am supposed to do it, but I just can t seem to do it instead, I end up doing the very thing that I know I shouldn t do Willpower might work for a while, but we always end up giving in to temptations in some shape or form If we go up against temptation against Satan and evil on our own, we are doomed. My goodness, even Jesus didn t go it alone against Satan! Our Gospel lesson this morning is from the Gospel of Mark. And even though Mark is sparing with his words, He makes sure to put the important things in there. Our text tells us that directly following Jesus baptism, the Spirit drives him into the wilderness. What happened to Jesus in his baptism? The Holy Spirit descended upon him. Yes, he had to go up against Satan, but he didn t do it alone. The Holy Spirit was in him. Now we might guess that Jesus has a little more willpower on his own than we do. Scripture tells us that Jesus is God. And we know that God has all power and might. and that Satan cannot stand against God s power. So why did Jesus need the Holy Spirit s help? Why did he need angels to attend to him in his struggle? because Jesus was also fully human. because Jesus limited himself when he stepped into human form. We need to be clear that Jesus was not immune to temptation. Jesus experienced temptation just like any other human being And statistics show that humans are more likely to give into temptation when their physical needs are unmet.when they are tired or hungry. Jesus was in the wilderness of 40 days; so we can only imagined that temptation must have been great. Yet, by the help of God, he withstood that temptation. And how do we know that God helped? Mark tells us with one little phrase: and the angels attended to him.
4 God did not leave Jesus to face temptation and hardship alone. Not only did Jesus have the Holy Spirit in him, God Almighty also sent angels to attend to him Now Mark doesn t elaborate on what attend to him meant But we can guess.that they encouraged him and comforted him Maybe they even fed him and gave him water. So God did not allow Jesus to be tempted without the support he needed to withstand the forces of evil around him. Nice for Jesus, right? But what does that have to do with us? You see, if God did not leave Jesus to face temptation and hardship alone, neither will God leave us. In our baptism, we have been connected to Christ forever. God will never leave us.especially in the midst of temptation and struggle. We may not be able to withstand temptation by our own willpower, But God s power can do all things. The good news is that the same Holy Spirit that supported and empowered Jesus, now empowers us. So where is your area of strongest temptation? How are you doing with it? And have you been trying to go it alone? Perhaps today is the day to adjust your approach: First, admit that you are powerless over it. Admit that you can t master this force on your own. Second, remove yourself from the temptation if you can. If you cannot, then at least interrupt the power this negative force by Stopping where you are and praying. Third, ask for God s help and power. Ask God to help you to recognize what is most pleasing to God in the situation. Four, look around for the angels that God sends you. Angels who are there to encourage you and comfort you; maybe even challenge you. We may not be able to withstand temptation by our own willpower, But God s power can do all things. Amen
