1 SECTOR - Turf If you enjoy outdoor sports and are interested in the maintenance of sporting facilities, then a career in the turf sector may be for you. Working with turf focuses on the preparation and maintenance of grasses and lawn areas used for sports and recreation. The work may require early starts, working weekends and skills in the operation of specialist machinery and equipment. At the supervisory and management levels there is also emphasis on greens reconstruction and renovation, irrigation management, chemical use and healthy turf growth. Managers are responsible for budgets and may have to report to club committees. Other areas of work in the turf sector include the commercial growing and supply of turf for homes and busineses, and mowing and lawn maintenance operations. Some common jobs in the sector include greenkeeper, racecourse attendant, sports oval curator, bowling green/ golf course attendant, golf course superintendent, turf equipment technician and course manager. JOB AREA - Turf Specialist If you enjoy working outdoors, getting your hands dirty, operating machinery and manual work, then a turf specialist career could be for you. Turf is used in many ways; for sports playing surfaces such as tennis, cricket, bowls and golf, on racecourses and of course to decorate domestic, commercial and public open spaces. Turf specialist occupations include the manufacture of turf, which involves planting, tending to and harvesting commercial turf crops. It also includes the preparation of sporting fields and surfaces, and the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment such as irrigation systems, tractors, trucks, rollers and mowers. Next Step An Australian Apprenticeship, which includes both apprenticeships and traineeships, is a great way to start your career. At the completion of your apprenticeship or traineeship you ll receive an industry qualification that is recognised throughout Australia. You can often start vocational education and training courses (VET) at school or possibly do a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship. If you complete a Diploma or Degree you ll be able to take on more development and management roles at a professional level. Federal and State Awards determine many wage rates. Some employers pay above the award so you will need to discuss wage rates with them. For more general info about this job try the my future website. You could also try entering the job title in your favourite search engine.
