1 OXFORD HONORS STUDIES PROGRAM Set in one of the world s oldest university towns, Boston University s Oxford Honors Studies Program offers students a wellrounded picture of twentieth-century Britain through the study of literature, politics, and history. Program Highlights Study options in modern British literature, history, and politics Coursework modeled on the Oxford system, employing tutorial teaching in groups of no more than three students Emphasis on wide reading, frequent writing, and extensive independent research Courses offered in cooperation with St. Anne s College Standard American-length semester or academic year St. Anne s College One of Oxford s newer and larger colleges, St. Anne s College was founded in The college s buildings mix the traditional with the modern and are located just north of the center of Oxford. As associate members of the college, Boston University students have full access to the St. Anne s College library, dining hall, computer facilities, and all college social activities and sporting clubs. Students also have limited access to the Bodleian Library and other Oxford University facilities. Students receive a food stipend, which may be used to purchase meals at St. Anne s dining hall. Oxford students also have the option to put the stipend toward groceries, and prepare their meals in the dormitory kitchens. In the Oxford tradition, St. Anne s cleaning staff, or scouts, regularly tidy students rooms. Ethernet connections are available in every room for those students who choose to bring laptop computers. All students are issued mobile phones for the semester. Faculty All tutorials and other courses in the Oxford Honors Studies Program are taught by highly qualified British faculty exclusively to students enrolled in the Boston University Program. 4 Boston University British Programs offer a variety of study abroad options and courses at our London headquarters in central and cosmopolitan South Kensington, and at St. Anne s College, Oxford. These range from the full semester London Internship Program, held three times a year, to special summer short courses of six to 13 weeks, to special music and theater programs linked with the Royal College of Music and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA). With offerings ranging from customized internships to intensive scholarly coursework, Boston University s British programs provide more than 700 students each year with opportunities to study and experience contemporary British culture. 6 THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY LONDON CENTER Located in the elegant central London neighborhood of South Kensington, the Boston University London Center houses the programs academic facilities, classrooms, library, and computer labs, as well as administrative offices for housing, student life, internship placements, and academic affairs. Wireless Internet access is provided throughout the building. There are 20 staff members based at the center who are responsible for assigning and maintaining housing, supervising the academic programs, providing student life services, arranging internships, and providing IT and research support. Housing in London London students live in furnished, secure apartments in Boston University buildings in South Kensington, all within easy walking distance of the London Center and easily accessible from all parts of London. BU s London residence halls are recently renovated historic buildings and offer the best student housing available in London. The apartments vary in size (from single rooms to 13 occupants in an apartment), configuration, and style of decoration, and most consist of shared bedrooms, a bath/shower room, and a living/dining room. All have fully equipped kitchens, and television lounges are provided on each floor or apartment. Telephones and high-speed Internet access are provided in each of the apartments; classrooms and many of the other facilities provide wireless Internet access. Faculty All courses in the London Internship Program are taught by highly qualified British faculty members exclusively to students enrolled in the Boston University London Internship Program. BRITISH PROGRAMS ADMINISTRATION London C. Ranald Macdonald, M.A., Cambridge University, M.S., Columbia University, is the resident director of Boston University s programs in London and Oxford, and a fellow of the University Professors Program at Boston University.
