3 Faculty of ARTS Introduction The Faculty Art comprises of five (5) schools, each representing a specific field of study and subject discipline: School of Philosophy (Philosophy, Ethics and the subject Understanding the World ); School of Communication Studies (Communication Studies, Graphic Design, Illustration Art and Art History); School of Social and Government Studies (History and Antique Culture, Social Anthropology, Public Management and Government, Political Studies and Sociology); School of Languages (Afrikaans and Dutch, German, English, French and Setswana, Creative Writing, Language Technology, Translation and Interpretation studies); and School of Music (Music subjects). The programme in BA Music and Society and the Diploma in Music is offered full-time and in English. All other undergraduate programmes offered by the Faculty of Arts are presented full-time and in Afrikaans. To qualify for study at the Faculty of Arts, the prospective student must meet the specific field of study s required APS score (see the guidelines at the front of this booklet). Language requirements A pass rate of 50%-59% (level 4) in the language of learning and education for home language or first additional language subject is required. The Faculty of Arts offers the following qualifications and programmes: Baccalaureus Artium (BA) Development and Management (Programme Code for application form: :L304P tot L309P) Aim and career possibilities of the programme In the civil service, with national, provincial and local government branches, and the different departments and divisions within these, there are numerous career possibilities for prospective students. This qualification prepares students to make a positive contribution in the civil service s service delivery to society. The successful completion of the programme will lead to admission to the honours degree in Development and Management and depending on the main subjects taken, also to the honours degree in Political Studies, Sociology, Economics. Heritage and Cultural Tourism Management (Programme Code: : L301P) The aim and career possibilities of this programme A wide variety of career possibilities exist in the tourism sector and heritage sectors and museums. History (with modules that focus on heritage and cultural tourism) and Tourism Management, prepare students in this regard. Curricula The programme only have one curriculum known as Heritage and Cultural Tourism Management. APS of at least 20 History and Tourism Management Mode of delivery and programme duration This programme is offered full-time only and extends over three years This programme offers admittance to an honours degree in Tourism Management Behavioural Studies (Programme Code: : L300P) The aim and career possibilities of this programme This curriculum could lead to careers in industrial psychology or labour relation practitioners. Successful completion of the programme leads to admittance to an honours degree in Human Resource Management, Labour Relations as well as Industrial Psychology. B Social Sciences (BSocSc) (Programme Code: : L301P tot L306P) The aim and career possibilities of this programme The advantage of this exciting new programme on the Potchefstroom Campus is that it offers the student excellent combinations of main subjects to ensure great career possibilities as well as to offer a wide variety of additional subjects to choose from such as languages and other social science subjects and even one or two subjects from other faculties. Depending on the curriculum followed, career possibilities include: market or social researchers; education (especially in combination with languages on second year level); journalism; news commentator; planner; political analyst; tourist guides; cultural historic; impact researchers; managers and economists. Depending on the main subjects taken, the successful completion of the this program leads to admission to the honours degree in Psychology, Sociology, History, Political Studies, Geography and Environmental Studies, Economics. Humanities (Programme Code: : L315P tot L338P) This programme leads to obtaining a general forming BA degree and offers admission to postgraduate studies in a variety of subjects. Aim and career possibilities of this programme The aim of this programme is to train students to meet the demands set by the South African society and to school them in the application of academic skills with the aim of further studies.. APS score of at least 20 Some of the subjects that could be taken in this programme, are languages (Afrikaans and Dutch, German, English, French, Setswana), Psychology, Industrial Psychology, History, Political Studies, Public Management and Governance, Art History, Philosophy, Social Anthropology, Economics, Sociology, Computer Science, Geography and Environmental studies and Mathematics. Mode of delivery and programme duration This programme is offered full-time only and extends over three
7 years. The successful completion of the programme leads to admission to various honours degrees, depending on the combination of subjects took. Language and Literature studies (Programme Code: : L331P to L341P) This programme entails the study of different languages and specifically the language and literatures of different languages. Aim and career possibilities of this programme To promote students language abilities with the objective of effective communication in a variety of careers; To sharpen students cultural awareness through literature studies, which is especially valuable in a multicultural country such as South Africa, but also looking at the processes of globalisation taking place worldwide. Mode of delivery and programme duration This programme is offered full-time only and extends over three years. Depending on the student s subject combination, successful completion of the programme leads to admission to honours degrees in various subjects. The most important subjects in this programme, include Music technology, Music History, Music Education, Music Notation, Music Theory, Africa Music, Music Performance, Arts Management and Choir Directing. Mode of delivery and programme duration The programme is offered full-time only and extends over three years. There are no possibilities for postgraduate study in this programme. BA Music (Programme Code: : L325P) This programme has a set subject combination. Aim and career possibilities of this programme The aim of this programme is to enable the student to function effectively as musician within the South African context. After completion of this programme, the student will be able to understand the connection between music, culture and society and to apply this knowledge to develop community projects. ; An APS score of at least 21; Pass a music aptitude and practical music test.
9 BA Communication (Programme Code: : L327P) This programme focuses on a broad spectrum of communication practices. It is possible to take one non-communication subject for this programme. After completion of the third year of study, the student obtains a BA degree. Aim and career possibilities of this programme The aim of this programme is to deliver communication specialists who can apply their knowledge and skills in a professional communication context, especially in corporate communication [public relations and liaison], journalism and corporative documentary video production and development communication. Students who follow this programme are advised to continue with an honours degree after completion of the first three years of Communication Studies. Journalism, Corporate Communication, Publishing, Media Policy, Ethics, Law, Intercultural and International Communication, Marketing Communication Management, Web development, Development and Political Communication, Integrated Corporate Media, Media and Corporate Writing. These communication modules may be combined with a variety of non-communication subjects. Mode of delivery and programme duration The programme is offered full-time only and extends over three years. After completion of the programme students gain admission to the honours degree in Communication studies, or the honours degree in the non-communication subject they took to the third year. 10 The graphic design industry is a growing, dynamic industry and is generally known as the biggest employer of artists in creative professions. Individual talent, driving force and personality is the decisive factors in determining the position a qualified person will fill in the industry. A considerable number of businesses, companies, design institutions, communication and printing houses employ graphic designers. Graphic Design (Programme Code: : L401P en L409P) Graphic Design is art in the form of visual communication. The task of the graphic designer includes the creation of illustrations or designs. Graphic Design entails the aesthetic and creative aspect of all promotional material. Examples hereof are the design of illustrations of emblems, brochures, promotional posters, websites, interactive CD s, technical and editorial illustrations, menus, business cards, front-page design and layout design and corporate image material used in the corporate and advertising world.. Programme For this qualification, two directed curricula are offered, focussing on training students who want to practise graphic design in a fast growing South African industry. Aim and career possibilities of the programme The aim of the programme is to train graphic artists who can suitably use their knowledge and skills on the terrain of graphic design art. The qualified person who likes independence, can start-up an own business and employ other graphic designers. The world of graphic design is one of the most stimulating and exciting study courses for the talented student and opens the door to a magnitude of satisfying and challenging opportunities. 11 31 August of the preceding year. The most important subjects in this programme are Graphic Design, Illustration Art, Art History and Communication Studies. Wyse van aanbieding en duur van die program The programme is offered full-time only and extends over four (4) years. After completion of the programme, students may have admission to a Masters Degree in Graphic Design (practise). Baccalaureus Musicae (BMus) (Programme Code: :L416P) Programme The first two years of study is seen as the basics of music training after which students can compile their curriculum in such a way that it has specific focus, for example, Music Performance, Music Science, Music Education, Composition or Music Technology. Aim and career possibilities of the programme Toe equip students in such a way that they will be able to apply their knowledge and skills as professionals and to be able to, on own initiative, gain further knowledge in their field of expertise. To provide knowledge and skills with which students can contribute to the promotion of all genres and types of music in South Africa To prepare students for a career in performance, composers, educators or academics. Specific admission requirements for the various programmes Additional to the general university admission requirements, the following applies: APS score of at least 21 Grade VII in one instrument and Grade V theory (Unisa) or at least level 5 (60-69%) in Music as Senior Certificate Subject, or another equivalent standard in music approved by the Senate A practical audition and theoretic admission test must be completed successfully The most important subjects in this programme are Music History, Listening training, Music Education, Practical Music and Music theory. Other subjects include, Social Music Science, Popular Music, Composition, Music Critique, Music Technology, Acoustics, Music Therapy. Together with this, a subject must be selected from
12 Afrikaans and Dutch, German, English, French, Psychology or Mathematics. Mode of delivery and programme duration The programme is offered full-time only over a period of four years. Depending on the focus of the chosen programme, students could choose to do a Masters Degree in any specialist field. Language Technology (Programme Code: : L426P) One curriculum only Global technological development offers challenges in virtually all subject fields. In this programme the focus is on the close relationship between the science of language and technology. Aim and career opportunities of this programmein die program In the programme BA Language Technology the worlds of computers and language reconciled. Language technology is one of the most important technologies to change our world drastically, because it enables one to communicate better in normal language between computers and computer systems. The programme trains students in the Science of Language and Computer Technology to meet the professional demands of the growing number of careers in this field. When you ve completed the programme, you will be able to pursue a career as language technologist. You will be able to, together with other people (example, engineers, computer scientists, language specialists, etc) develop language

Mode of delivery and duration of programme The programme is offered full-time only over four years. Admission to postgraduate study The successful completion of the programme leads to admission to the MA degree in General Language and Literature Science. Diploma in Music (Program Code: : L206P) Programme One curriculum is offered in this programme Aim and career opportunities of this programme To prepare students for perform as musicians with the necessary skills and knowledge To equip students with the basic knowledge of music education to enable them to educate other students on a basic level.
