The Engineering Career Institute at Highlands High School offers an advanced and rigorous curriculum in all core subjects with a focus on career opportunities in one of three different strands or majors to choose from: Engineering, Networking and Computer Science, all under the STEM endorsement. Highlands High School is receiving $65.7 MILLION IN UPGRADES An endorsement is a targeted area of interest, and there are five different areas set by the state. All majors offer students a number of Advanced Placement and dual-credit courses. Career courses closely align to the related programs at St. Philip s College. Advanced Placement courses are available to prepare students for rigorous college coursework offered through the dual-credit courses. 6 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ADVANCED BIOTECHNOLOGY Students learn to use sophisticated laboratory equipment, perform statistical analysis and practice quality-control techniques in applying advanced knowledge and skills to the emerging fields of agricultural, medical, regulatory and forensic biotechnology. ADVANCED ENGINEERING DESIGN & PRESENTATION (DC) Students master computer software applications in a variety of engineering and technical fields, while further developing the process of engineering thought and application of the design process. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (PLTW) Students develop artificially intelligent systems that create solutions to real problems found in science and industry. Students analyze problems for computational difficulty and analyze solutions for computational efficiency. BIOTECHNOLOGY Students study agricultural, environmental, economic and political roles of bioenergy and biological remediation; the roles of nanoscience and nanotechnology in biotechnology medical research and future trends in biological science and biotechnology. COMPUTATIONAL PROBLEM-SOLVING (PLTW) As a capstone course, CPS offers students the opportunity to work in a team to deliver a software solution to a real-world design problem. Teams start by defining problems, which might originate from CPS students, community, industry clients, or students in other problem-based courses, and use the Agile design process to develop a software solution. COMPUTER MAINTENANCE Students acquire principles of computer maintenance, including electrical and electronic theory, computer hardware principles, and broad level components related to the installation, diagnosis, service and repair of computer systems. Students reinforce, apply and transfer knowledge and skills in a variety of settings and problems and demonstrate the necessary skills for career development, employability and completion of course outcomes. APPLICATIONS (PLTW) Students produce programs that integrate mobile devices and leverage devices for distributed collection and data processing. Students analyze, adapt and improve each other s programs while working primarily in JAVA and other industry-standard tools. This course prepares students for College Board s Advanced Placement CS-A test. & SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (PLTW) This course develops computational thinking, generates excitement about career paths that utilize computing and introduces professional tools that foster creativity and collaboration. This course can serve as a student s first course in computer science. Students develop programming expertise and explore the workings of the Internet. Projects and problems include app development, visualization of data, cybersecurity, robotics, and simulation. COMPUTER TECHNICIAN Students gain knowledge and skills in computer technologies, including advanced knowledge of electrical and electronic theory, computer principles, and components related to the installation, diagnosis, service and repair of computer-based technology systems. Students reinforce, apply and transfer knowledge and skills to a variety of settings and problems. Proper use of analytical skills and application of information technology concepts and standards are essential to prepare students for success in a technology-driven society. Critical thinking, information technology experiences and product development may be conducted in a classroom setting with an instructor, industry mentor or both. CONCEPTS OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY Provides an overview of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and their interrelationships. Students work on design teams to develop a product or system and use multiple software applications to prepare and present course assignments. CYBERSECURITY (PLTW) Introduces the tools and concepts of cybersecurity and encourages students to create solutions that allow people to share computing resources while protecting privacy. This course raises students knowledge of and commitment to ethical computing behavior. DIGITAL & INTERACTIVE MEDIA Students analyze and assess current and emerging technologies while designing and creating multimedia projects that address customer needs and resolve problems. ENGINEERING DESIGN & PRESENTATION Students study the process of design as it applies to engineering fields using multiple software applications and tools necessary to produce and present working drawings, solid model renderings and prototypes.

7 ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS Students solve and model robotic design problems. Students use a variety of mathematical methods and models to represent and analyze problems involving data acquisition, spatial applications, electrical measurement, manufacturing processes, materials engineering, mechanical drives, pneumatics, process control systems, quality control, and robotics with computer programming. FORENSIC SCIENCE Provides students with a basic understanding of investigative theory, collection and preservation of evidence and sources of information. Methods of conducting interviews and interrogations are covered. Students must pass safety test with 100% mastery. GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS This course educates students about their local and global community, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS). GIS allows students to view, understand, question, interpret and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports and charts. Learning exercises include the use and analysis of High Resolution Landsat images over 100 GIS layers. Course curriculum is multidisciplinary by nature and incorporates math skills, science, social science and language arts. INTER TECHNOLOGIES I Students design, build and maintain small to medium-sized networks. This course covers aspects of hardware support related to personal computers (PCs) including system troubleshooting, system board, drive subsystems, memory, input/output devices and multimedia. In a lab setting that corresponds to the real world, students utilize the building blocks of today s computer technology, global information, networks and ecommerce web development. This high-tech learning environment provides students with the knowledge and experience to enter the workforce and/or further their education and training in the computer networking field. INTRODUCTION TO (PLTW) Students learn the impact of computing in society and the application of computing across career paths. Students create interactive stories; work in teams to create simple apps for mobile devices using App Inventor; and analyze data about students health, social habits, and interests using functions in Excel. MODERN PHYSICS Students gain an understanding of how science works; what motivates it, how initially promising ideas are refuted by continuing research, and the consequences of science on other fields and society in general. PRINCIPLES OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Students develop computer literacy skills to adapt to emerging technologies used in the global marketplace. Students implement personal and interpersonal skills to prepare for a rapidly evolving workplace environment. Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communication and reasoning skills and apply them to the information technology environment. ROBOTICS & AUTOMATION Students demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for the robotics and automation industry. Students build prototypes or use simulation software to test their designs. Students must pass the safety test with 100% mastery. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH & DESIGN Students study the principles of environmental engineering. Topics include material balances, environmental chemistry, risk assessment, air quality, water quality and waste water treatment. Quantitative evaluation of environmental, technical and economic problems with control of pollutants in air, water and land will also be discussed. SIMULATION & MODELING Students create models and simulate social, physical and biological systems. Students apply statistics and data analysis to understand systems and predict behavior, and compare models to complex, real data. Students create simulations to communicate central ideas in the physical, biological and social sciences and deepen their understanding of concepts in discrete math and computer science. This course emphasizes collaboration, professional writing, scientific method and aligns with CSTA Level 3C Standards. TELECOMMUNICATIONS & Students develop the concepts and skills related to telecommunications and data networking technologies and practices in order to apply them to personal and career development. Students reinforce, apply and transfer knowledge and skills in a variety of settings and problems and will demonstrate the necessary skills for career development, employability and completion of course outcomes. WEB TECHNOLOGIES Students gain advanced knowledge and skills in the appreciation, design, production, implementation, maintenance, evaluation and assessment of products, services and systems. Knowledge and skills in the proper use of analytical skills and application of information technology concepts and standards are essential to prepare students for success in a technology-driven society. Critical thinking, information technology experience and product development may be conducted in a classroom setting with an industry mentor, as an unpaid internship or as career preparation. Students must pass safety test with 100% mastery.
