4 REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIPS In an effort to provide a catalyst in supporting a uniquely American Apprenticeship system that meets our country s particular economic, industry and workforce needs, the U.S. Department of Labor American Apprenticeship Initiative awarded Focus: HOPE $3 million to fund this program. APPRENTICESHIP is a system of training a new generation of workers, a trade or profession, with on-the-job training and some accompanying study
5 MANUFACTURING APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING TRACK Become a CNC Machinist Learn to operate and maintain CNC machining and turning centers, use CAD/CAM software, lathes, milling, tool room equipment and measuring devices. Work with various metals, read blueprints, and produce products to meet specifications. Pre-Apprenticeship is a 7 week course designed for entry-level students as well experienced machinist who want to enter Focus Hope s CNC machinist apprentice training program. While advancing through apprentice training students will take the NIMS safety & measurement certification exam. Apprenticeship Training After completion of pre-apprentice training, qualifying students advance to apprentice training. During the term of apprenticeship training, students will work with partnered employers for on-the- job training as well as attend apprentice related classes. The estimated term of apprenticeship is about 2 years related instructional training and remaining time in On-the-job-training (OJT).

7 MANUFACTURING ON-THE-JOB-TRAINING OVERVIEW Apprenticeship Proficiencies of Graduates Classroom Instruction On-the-Job Learning CNC Machinist Operating and maintaining CNC milling or turning centers, use CAD/CAM software, lathes, milling, grinding and measuring devices. Able to read blueprints, produce materials defined by them. Work with various metals, produce products to meet specifications. 360 classroom hours covering Computer Numeric Control (CNC) set-up, operations, M & G Codes, and includes some computer programming to create a higher level of marketability. Full Time: 4,000 hours (approx. 2 yrs.) on the job training with an experienced machinist, apprentices learn to operate machine tools, program computer controlled equipment, and practice designing and producing products. Full time employment equals to an average 2,080 hours per year. The apprentices works with a skilled Journey Worker or Mentor to provide the opportunity to train in the established work processes
8 ROLE OF EMPLOYERS Advise on Program Development and Curriculum o Identify the skills and knowledge that apprentices must learn o Identify the On-the-Job skills and knowledge apprentices obtain o Participate in the Employer Advisory Council Employ Apprentices o Select current employee to be apprentices in the AAP o Hire registered apprentices trained by Focus: HOPE o Pay progressively higher wages as skills increase Provide on-the job training Identify an Experienced mentor to work with apprentices Commit to the 2-year cost of training/tuition

10 ROLE OF APPRENTICE Enrollment into Pre-Apprenticeship Program: HS diploma or GED Drug Free Minimum 10 th grade math and reading levels on TABE to enter into preapprentice training Complete Jumpstart (pre-training for work readiness, professional skills; and psychology of success) o This course prepares students for the academic and work skills neededto succeed in the apprenticeship program Continue in Apprenticeship Training: ExcellentAttendance Maintain a 75% academic standing in all pre-apprenticeship courses
