3 Dear Friend of the Italian Design, It s a pleasure for me to introduce the Domus Academy world and in particular the Summer Programs Domus Academy was established in 1982 as the first Italian post-graduate school for design, fashion, architecture and management. Since then it represents a landmark for Design Education, whose reputation is well established among the international design community. The roots of Domus Academy remain in Italy but its activities branch out internationally, encompassing several educational paths, like the world-wide known Master Courses, the Summer Courses and the Tailor-made training programs. Domus Academy benefits from an open structure which combines its faculty and a wide network of professional designers who are daily involved into the educational activities. This represents a powerful blend which ensures flexibility and constant update and renewal. Domus Academy educational approach brings participants the full richness of Italian design experience combined with the most updated international views and perspectives. During the summer, Domus Academy runs a unique series of intensive, short courses, whose aim is offering to the most talented students and promising international designers the opportunity to experience the Domus Academy learning methodology. 4 DOMUS ACADEMY NUOVA ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI MILANO (NABA) In the 80 s Domus Academy imposed itself as the first postgraduate school of Design in the world: a place of advanced training and a research laboratory on processes of industrial creativity, on scenarios of aesthetics and consumption, on space-time relations, on utility and private service. Domus Academy constantly looks at radical changes linked to new technologies. The school boasts 9 Master courses, validated by the University of Wales: Master in Design, Master in Interaction Design, Master in Car Design, Master in Business Design, Master in Interior and Living Design, Master in Urban Vision and Architectural Design, Master in Fashion Design, Master in Accessories Design, Master in Fashion Management and the new Master in Service Design. Domus Academy attracts students from all over the world: in 2009 they were 240 from 44 different countries. All the activity of Domus Academy is designed as a laboratory for research and exploration of future scenarios. The presence of multidisciplinary teams, students from all over the world and the vocation to research, typical of Italian design, are the most important elements, which characterize the work and study environment of the school. In addition to the Masters courses, Domus Academy offers a wide range of short courses: Summer Sessions and Courses for companies and executives. In 1994 Domus Academy got the Compasso d Oro award for the career. In 2009 Business Week selected Domus Academy among the 30 best schools of design in the world The Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano is unique among all the Italian Art and Design academies. It was the first and is the largest and the most innovative private Academy legally recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, and the first to introduce the study of fashion and graphic design in the fine arts curriculum. NABA trains students and professionals in areas of Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Theatre Design, Graphic Design and Art Direction, Media Design and Visual Arts. NABA education integrates the more traditional disciplines of visual representation with the new digital technologies. The Summer Programs Educational Offer is wide-ranging and diversified: it includes introduction level courses at NABA intended for students without any academic background in a specific subject area and offering a unique opportunity to explore a new creative environment; workshops (project research) at NABA that are particularly suitable for students with some background in that specific subject 6 7

5 area who are keen on building upon this through hands-on training experience; advanced level courses at Domus Academy that are intensive skills enhancement programs addressed to professionals, young designers and final year students willing to explore new opportunities combining strategy and creativity. Students will learn from experienced and skilled professionals and will be taught how to research and present a creative idea. Selected visits to museums, companies, production sites and design studios during the programs expose students to the creative and cultural environment in Italy. Domus Academy and NABA Summer Session has been designed in a way that will enable students to combine their courses in a 4-week or 6-week session thus making the most of their time in Milan and fully experimenting the two Academies teaching approaches and values PARTNERSHIPS Domus Academy and NABA collaboration with Central Saint Martins is continuing for the 6th consecutive year. The focus of the 2011 Edition of the London Milan. The Dual City Summer Session will be Fashion in all its aspects: Fashion Design, Fashion Accessories, Fashion Communication, Fashion Styling and Textile Design. 7 Interior Design Designing the Shopping Experience Course Content Retail stores represent design opportunities. The formal possibilities of design solutions can enrich the purchase experience. The course investigates the key elements of the design of a retail store, related to the socio-cultural, architectural and language characteristics of a city and to people s needs/desires. Objectives Developing innovative design solutions to enrich people s experience within the store. design for La Cucina Italiana. From 1995 until 2007 she was partner, with Ivan D Agostini, of the Dedini D Agostini architectural studio. From 1996 until the end of June 2006 Antonella Dedini ran the Milan based IDI AC Interior Design Institute e Ateneo Creativo Scuola Superiore di Pubblicità e Comunicazione. Since 2004 she has been Director of the new Master Course in Interior and Living Design at Domus Academy. From 2008 she has been among the associates of architecture, design and communication studio Architettura Attuale with Guendalina Di Lorenzo and Paolo Cesaretti that in 2010 was among the winners of LED_ Lighting Exhibition Design competition promoted by Comune di Milano Who s the course addressed to? Architects and Designers willing to work in the field of retail store design with an eye on brand experience. Methodology Lectures, workshops. Course Leader Antonella Dedini She graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1989 with a degree in Architecture, her major being Industrial Design. After obtaining a Master in Interior Design, she undertook specialization courses in Architectural Design in the University of Aarhus in Denmark, and the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Stockholm, Sweden. Between 1989 and 1995, she was on the editorial staff of Ottagono, a leading Italian periodical dealing with art, design, and architecture. She contributes to a number of internationallyrenowned architecture and design publications such as Domus, Abitare and Ottagono, as well as writing on 12 13

8 Design 360 Car Design Course Content Car design as a discipline is rapidly evolving. The future perspective for low impact urban vehicles offers new possibilities to arrange car interiors and new possibilities for the designers to interpret users needs and behaviours. The course comprises a series of preparatory design lectures: historical research, languages, materials, sketching and presentation techniques. The course also includes a design session ending with the presentation of an individual project. FIAT with the supervision of Marco Susani and Ermanno Cressoni. Since 1990, he has worked on several international projects about communication strategies, Interaction Design and Industrial Design. His major professional interest is developing unique, intelligent solutions. Some of the unique and innovative solutions that he developed for complex design problems are the guidelines which are used for the realization and management of the internet and intranet structures of the biggest Italian companies which are published in Italian press media and became the subject of the seminars that he held in several universities Objectives The course offers a real design experience with specialized professionals, with the aim to develop innovative solutions for the interiors of an urban compact vehicle. Who s the course addressed to? Students with a strong passion for this field, and with good graphic and hand work skills. Methodology Lectures, workshops. Course Leader Cem Cansu Deputy Director of the Master Course in Car Design at Domus Academy. After achieving a Bachelor in Industrial Design from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, he moved to Milan. In 1999 he participated in the Master in Design at Domus Academy to enhance his international experience in Industrial Design and Interface Design for Digital Applications, preparing his master degree thesis for 14 15

9 Urban and Landscape Design Design Around the Expo Urban Design, Architecture and Landscape for a new area of the city Aesthetic shape and functions of the contemporary city Course Content In the last few years, the Sempione Area has attracted a lot of interest and investments. In its stretching out from the city to the countryside some pieces of this area are suspended in a confused and often shapeless territory. From Porta Garibaldi to the Milano Trade Fair there is a closely spaced succession of islands, landmarks and platforms placed side by side and separated by important linking axes. The project work will concentrate on one of this imaginary islands where a new portion of the city will have to be built as an additional paragraph of the general tale that the city is writing there. Objectives The course aims at introducing students to the newest and most modern analysis, contextualization and selection models and tools of the various components of complex urban contexts. The course foresees both the development of the interpretation and analytical tools and the identification of the problems that need to be addressed by the project. The final output shall lay upon the new urban design, a new strategic and visionary dimension, in which functionality, aesthetics and landscape all contribute to the search for a dialogue with the context and for a new identity for the project area. Methodology The course will be structured in lessons and review activity. Lessons will include both theory dealing with the general topic and without any direct references to the project and to the urban area being studied and more practical analysis of case studies in connection with the chosen area and to the issues that will be addressed through the project. The review activity will include both one-to-one revision sessions with the project leader and open reviews with all the other participants. Course Leader Gianandrea Barreca Architect, since 2006 director of the Master in Urban Vision and Architectural Design at Domus Academy. He was professor at the University of Genoa Architectural department (2001/01 and 2001/03) and was responsible for the Villard itinerant seminar within the Faculty of Architecture of Genoa. Since 2009 he has been teaching Architectural Composition at the Faculty of Construction Engineering and Architecture in Genoa. From 1999 till 2008 he was partner of Boeri Studio, a professional design office specializing in architecture, urban design and city planning. He is a founding member of Gruppo A12 realizing and exhibiting works for: the Biennial of Young Mediterranean Artists 1997, ZKM - Karlsruhe 1999, the 7 th Venice Architectural Biennial 2000, Villa Medici in Rome 2000, the Biennial of Contemporary Art Ljubljana 2000, PS1 Museum New York 2001, CCA in Kitakyushu Japan 2002, the Art Biennial in Shanghai 2002, the Arengario in Milan 2003, the 50 th Venice Biennial of Art 2003, the Kroller-Muller Museum in Otterlo Holland 2004, the 8 th Venice Architectural Biennial 2004 e 2008, the Art Biennial in Istanbul 2005, Villa Manin in Passeriano, Udine 2005, Pittimmagine Discovery. In January 2008 he founded the architectural studio Barreca & La Varra together with Giovanni La Varra Who s the course addressed to? The course is intended for recent graduates or students who are attending the final years of a degree in architecture, engineering, urban and landscape design. The course content will be particularly interesting for students from the faculty of construction engineering, environmental engineering, sociology and anthropology

10 Design Product Design. New scenarios for sustainable aesthetics Course Content This summer course starts from a deep understanding of the complicated crisis of sustainability, and leads to a new proposal of its relationship with the design of objects. In order to do so, it is necessary to accept that there is still an unchartered territory to be explored, and a group of sustainability issues designers have yet to address. Hence, the main point of departure for this two-week course will be the investigation of new possibilities and innovative ways in which objects can create highly rewarding experiences for the individuals who use them, while at the same time achieving a high degree of sustainability. Or to put it in other words, that there are design tools, mechanisms, systems and scenarios capable of transforming the usually unpleasant (from the users point of view) act of saving energy, materials, natural resources and so on, into an experience to be enjoyed, or even desired. Course Leader Niko Koronis He graduated in architecture from the Welsh School of Architecture, where a year later he did his Master degree in Environmental Design of Buildings. He then moved to Milan, where he attended Domus Academy and obtained the Master in Design with distinction. He spent a year as the Master s Design Tutor, after which he studied for his Phd in Theory and History of Architecture at the Architectural Association in London. He has been a Fellow at Central Saint Martins and a researcher at the Alvar Aalto Foundation in Helsinki. He has taught, lectured and undertaken research in architecture, product and urban design, and has taken part in several exhibitions, amongst which the Venice Biennale and the Triennale di Milano Objectives Investigating and elaborating the signs of new, yet not just visual, sustainable aesthetics. Who s the course addressed to? Design students (industrial design, interior and product design, architecture and any related fields) entering their final year of an undergraduate degree, recent graduates or those with at least two years related industry experience. 12 Fashion Design Creating a Fashion Collection: The Brand Restyling Course Content To design a collection means focusing on research themes capable of supporting not only the collection itself, but also the management of creativity. Brand re-styling has today become a necessary step for the new-generation of professionals operating within the fashion world who need to interpret and act in different, new and exciting ways. and brides and creating couture dresses for the Red Carpet. She signed the trends column for Vogue Sposa. She s author of Dress your Talent the first TV talent format focused on fashion industry and Made in Italy. She is currently Head of the Fashion Management Department and Master Director at Domus Academy and consultant for innovative projects that mix creativity, brand and communication strategies Objectives Deepening of thematic areas in the perspective of a brand restyling project. This course intends to explore brand re-styling as an important element of fashion designing, one that influences and modifies the approach to designing a new collection. Who s the course addressed to? Fashion designers, visual designers, stylists, brand designers and fashion managers. Methodology Lectures, field trips, workshops. Course Leader Annagemma Lascari 22 She is a fashion designer formed in the fashion environment closer to design and architecture. After graduating in 1988 in Fashion Design at Domus Academy, in 1991 she won the young talent selection of the High Fashion in Rome. She has collaborated with Ferré and Dior and she has drawn the new Capucci s Pap together with Berhard Willhem. Expert of trends and style, since 1993 she has focused her creations on bridal wear and experimental tailoring. She opened the first design studio for the Unique Dress, designing for celebrities 23

13 Interior Design Interior Design for Hotels Course Content Hotel Design is a course aiming at thoroughly examining and expanding the potential of the hotel and accommodation industry in all its aspects. By drawing on contribution of designers, hotel managers, real estate and specialized businesses, it provides valuable insights into the most innovative and successful structures of the industry: city hotels, resorts, spas and wellness centers. This will enable the hotel designer to combine the esthetical competences of the latest interior design trends with concrete and specific operational tools, thanks to the involvement of the most important brands in the sectors of furniture, contracts, lighting, upholstery and textiles. Between 1989 and 1995, she was on the editorial staff of Ottagono, a leading Italian periodical dealing with art, design, and architecture. 14 Design Design for all Course Content The course will explore methodology and development of appropriate tools in order to design objects so that everyone can participate in our society on an equal basis, regardless of age, gender, capabilities or cultural background. The workshop will be focused on managing and developing a DfA project from the concept to the realization. Avril cooperates with professional studios and companies, national and foreign, for innovation in the sectors of High Technology, Product, Research & Development. She teaches DfA and she has written a book on Design for All implementation and methodology Objectives To get acquainted with specific design methodologies suited to make objects consistent with human diversity. Who s the course addressed to? Young designers and students from related fields (industrial design, interior and product design, fashion design, architecture, management and business design) that want to gain experience in the world of Design for All. Methodology Lectures, field trips, workshops. Course Leader Avril Accolla She graduated in Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano with specializations in Design Direction, Diversity, Marketing, Training Management and Prototipation. In 2002 she opened her own professional studio, avrildesign, particularly focusing on Design for All. She has managed a production engineering R&D department focusing on industrialization of innovative products

15 General information SUMMER SESSIONS First Session: from June 27 th to July 8 th 2011 (NABA) Second Session: from July 12 th to July 22 nd 2011 (NABA and Domus Academy) Third Session: from July 26 th to August 5 th 2011 (NABA and Domus Academy) DOMUS ACADEMY TUITION FEES 2-week session: 1800 (VAT included) tuition fee for 54 hours of lesson 4-week session: 2800 (VAT included) tuition fee for 108 hours of lesson The fees include: class work, lectures and guided visits included in the program. The fees do not include: air fare, accommodation, local transportation and meals. Please note that the Summer Programs have a limited number of places that will be therefore assigned on a first come first accepted basis ACCOMMODATION Domus Academy and NABA provide a list of accommodation options in Milan (Residence Halls, Hotels, B&B) that students can contact autonomously to book their own accommodation. Alternative accommodation in private flats located close to the two schools is also available upon request.
