2 JUNE 2009 SUNDAY 14 JUNE 2009 Pre-Conference/Arrival :30 Welcome Reception, Stavanger Petroleum Museum, Hosted by the City of Stavanger MONDAY 15 JUNE 2009 Plenary Registration: : University of Stavanger anger Arne Rettedals Hus 9:00 Welcome to Stavanger Leif Johan Sevland, Mayor of Stavanger 9:05 Introduction Dr Martin Gjelsvik 9:10 Leadership, Innovation and Organizational Performance Professor Andrew Pettigrew, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford 10:15 15 Innovation in Transforming City Regions: Roundtable on the Role of Politics Individually and collectively, energy capitals are powerful drivers for technological, scientific, environmental, economic and cultural change. The use of fossil fuels has made possible the most significant and transformative innovations of the past century: railroads, cars and planes. The connections between energy production and use, urban growth and environmental issues are complex. We want to examine these related issues by focusing on the extreme cases that most dramatically highlight the relationship between energy, environment, urbanization and the need for innovation: the Energy Capitals. The challenge goes first to the politicians of these cities. 1

3 Moderators: Martin Gjelsvik, Director, Stavanger Centre for Innovation Research, and Helge O. Bergesen, Head of Research, UiS Participants: World Energy Cities: Leif Johan Sevland, Mayor of Stavanger Kate Dean- Leader of Aberdeen City Council Issa Dadoush, City of Houston John Hankins, Calgary Economic Development 11: : 11:35 11: : Session One: Transforming City Regions: The Role of Business, Research and Academic Institutions Innovation and use of new technology, dynamic knowledge institutions and the quest for sustainable solutions are all elements of the transformation processes in city regions. Fossil fuels helped transform the modern city worldwide and today all cities are energy intensive. The innovative capabilities of cities are highly dependent of the visions and strategies of business and their willingness to explore new technologies. The next dialogue aims to allow industry and research leaders share their perspectives on their own role and their expectations to local knowledge institutions and politicians. Moderator: Johan Roos, Incoming President Copenhagen Business School Participants: Inge Jan Henjesand, Abelia Eimund Nygård, Lyse Energi, Bernt Arne Breistein, Acergy AS Klaus Mohn, StatoilHydro AS 45-14:00 Lunch 14:00-16:00 16:00 Session Two: The Role of Culture in City Transformation Culture can also be a driver for transformation of city regions. Cultural activities embrace creativity, and may revitalize the social and intellectual life in cities. Some cities have staged cultural mega events in the belief that they act as a catalyst for longer-term outcomes, as well as a platform for radical transformation. Liverpool, Glasgow and Stavanger have been European Capitals of Culture. In the next session we want to learn what kind of impact these mega events have had or are expected to have in city transformation processes and how they may stimulate creative initiatives and shape identities. Brief presentations and round table discussion Moderator: Participants: Per Olof Berg, Stockholm School of Business Hilmar Rommetvedt, IRIS, Stavanger 2
