1 MODULE2: MANUFACTURING Introduction This tutorial is designed to introduce you to the basic Manufacturing Techniques used in Pro/E. HOW TO Start: Turn on the computer and monitor. After the machine boots, there will be a message telling you to press CONTROL-ALT-DEL to log on. After you press these keys, the next prompt will be for a user name and password. Consult the instructor for the current info. Login will bring you to an introduction screen. Pro/E will use a default directory for storing your part files if you do not specify another one. During the semester, many files are generated and purged, so save your files on your own Pen Drive if possible. Next use the "PRO_E " icon to start Pro/ENGINEER. The Pro-E icon is located under the PTC program group which is under PROGRAM MANAGER. Getting started: Open Pro/Engineer Select file new You will be greeted by the following window Select manufacturing and click ok A milling and a turning operation will be demonstrated here

2 Milling: Step1: Create the Finished Piece using part modeling, Work-piece Is Not Needed since PROE Will Create It Itself. Create a 200x200x200 Cube with a 100x100x100 Slot on Top Step2: File New Manufacturing Then Select Assemble Reference Model Option By Using The First Icon After Opening the Reference Select Default

3 Click the Tick Now We Should Give the Work-Piece Select Automatic Work-piece Option Next To the Assemble Reference Model Option Or Else If You Want To Assemble A Work-piece You Can Do So by Clicking the Assemble Work-piece Option

4 Click the Tick Step3: Now to Give the Machine Details Go To Steps Operation This Will Open the Operation Setup Window Click the Option The Machine Tool Setup Window Gets Opened

5 In That Give Values for Spindle Speed And Feed In Cutting Tools Tab Select Change the Values You Want To Change And Give Apply, OK

6 Another Ok in the Machine Tool Setup Window to Close It Now You Will Be Back In the Operation Setup Window Before Selecting Machine zero You Must Create a Co-ordinate In PROE 5 You Must Create a Co-ordinate before Hand To Create A Co-ordinate Insert Model Datum Coordinate System Select Three Perpendicular Planes,Note That The Plane On Which The Cutter Will Act Must Be Considered As z-axis, So If You Select It At The Last It Will Be Automatically Assigned z-axis Or Else You May Change Orientation Also

7 Give OK Now Select the Arrow Next To The Machine zero And Give Select And Select the Coordinate system You Have Created Now Select the Retract Surface

8 Give Some Value and Click Ok And Another Ok to Close Operation Setup Window Step4: Creating the Mill Volume Select the mill volume option Select Extrude Now Select the Top Plane Select the References And Sketch the Area You Want To Cut Out. Instead of sketching you can also select the sketch you drew earlier while making the part (by expanding the model tree) using the use tool Click the Tick to Get Out Of Sketcher Give the Extrusion Depth and Tick Then Again Tick To Create the Mill Volume Step5: Playback Go to Steps and Select the Operation You Want To Do Consider a Pocketing Operation For Example

9 Now You Will Get the Following Options Give Done OK Then the following window will open up

10 In This Give Values For cut Feed, step Depth, Step over, Clear distance and spindle speed And Give Ok Now Select Mill Volume done Select the volume you just created Then click on select all done/return Now Play path screen play and select the play button Then Close and Give Done Sequence NOTE: To Save The NC Program, In The Play path Window Select File Save as and give ok to save it

11 NC check: Screen play allows us to visualize only the path of the cutting tool, but the NC check option allows you to visualize the entire milling operation This option can be accessed by clicking on the NC check option under play path A new window will open up Use the options to control the playing of the video Use file images record movie to save the video

12 Turning: Create the following part and a corresponding work piece File New Manufacturing Then Select Assemble Reference Model Option By Using The First Icon After Opening the Reference Select Default Click the Tick Now we should assemble the Work-Piece Click assemble work piece icon

13 And assemble the work-piece just as you assembled the finished part Create a co-ordinate system To create the axis click on the axis line of the assembled component And on the outermost surface (the plane surface not the curved surface) Now click on the orientation tab and set the z axis in the direction of tool movement Click on use and select a perpendicular plane now the axis should be similar to the axis in the fig Note that the x and y axis might be interchanged but the z axis should be along the direction of motion of the tool Click ok to create the axis Now to Give the Machine Details Go To Steps Operation This Will Open the Operation Setup Window Click the Option The Machine Tool Setup Window Gets Opened Change machine type to lathe

14 Now set the spindle, feed, cutting tools just as you would do so in milling Click ok Now select the co-ordinate system you created earlier for your machine zero Select the retract surface and click ok In turning operations we need not create a volume but we must create a turn profile Click the turn profile icon Click Then open click placement and select the co-ordinate system you created earlier Now click on the sketch icon Click sketch And the sketcher window will open Now draw your turn profile And click the done option And it will show you the start and end points

15 Click the tick Go to, steps profile turning Click done, in the window Click ok, in the tools setup window Give values for cut feed and spindle speed And click ok Now the tool motion window will open up Click insert Another window will open up

16 Select the profile that you created earlier Click on the tick Click ok in the tool motions window To view the simulation Click on play path NC check The vericut window will open up Click to start the simulation If it asks for tolerance just click yes The finished component will be like this
