Open to beginner & experienced actors, residents & non-residents in grades If cast in the show, actors will need to pay a registration fee. $170 Non-Resident / $160 Resident Fee includes a tshirt, song sheets, costumes, and other material costs.

2 Everyone auditioning will be taught a short dance/movement sequence before entering the audition room. If you have any special skills (e.g. gymnastics, juggle, hula hoop) we may ask them to show us!! Review the character summary to learn more about each character! Please be sure to bring a picture! Pre-registration for auditions is available at FYI REHEARSALS Our show is double cast. This means that we cast two people per role, and the two casts share responsibility of the performance dates. The times listed below are standard rehearsal times. Please know that we get closer to the performance dates, rehearsal may be a bit longer in length or have a few additional days added. You will be notified well in advance, should this occur. Red Fish Cast Rehearsals Mondays, 6:15-8:30 pm & Saturdays, 1-3:30 pm Blue Fish Cast Rehearsals Wednesdays, 6:15-8:30 pm & Saturdays, 3:30-6 pm *please note that leads may receive additional rehearsal times MANDATORY PARENT MEETING: January 28, 6-9 pm (only for those cast in the show) First Rehearsal: January 30

3 CHARACTER SUMMARY The Cat in the Hat Fun and imaginative! The cat stirs things up and causes trouble, but always sets things right! The Cat is funny, comedic and is a physical character! JoJo Is a thinker with a wild imagination! He lives in a society that doesn t appreciate his imagination! He gets in trouble for his thinks! Horton the Elephant A gentle giant! He is big hearted, steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is an un-self-conscious and his view of the world never changes he believes in its goodness. Gertrude McFuzz self-conscious bird and aware that her one feather tail isn t perfect! She is vain, shy and nervous at the beginning of the show, but changes during the show she stops worrying about her looks and grows up! Mayzie La Bird Self-centered, selfish, vain and has a little attitude! She is manipulative, especially to Horton. She s not all bad! Must be confident and dynamic! Sour Kangaroo Attitude, attitude, attitude! She is loud and a lot of fun! General Gengus Khan Schmitz Bursting with pride at the military academy he runs! He s not mean, he is very proud! He believes he is doing the right thing! But he is so misguided so it makes him a comic character. At the end of the show, he discovers making war might not be the right thing and adults can learn from kids! The Wickersham Brothers Get their kicks by making mischief, often at other s people expense! They are not bad guys! They like hanging out, making music & playing off each other. Mr. & Mrs. Mayor Parents trying hard to raise a difficult child! The get aggravated with Jojo, but love him dearly and try to do the right thing! Bird Girls Clique of back up birds that do whatever Mayzie does! Thing 1 & Thing 2 Twin mischief- makers who accompany the Cat in the Hat. Very physical. Will help move some set as part of the performance! The Whos They re a lot like you and me just so small as to be invisible! They are unique, fun individuals each having their own personality. Chorus Characters Includes Jungle Creatures, Hunches, Fish, Cadets, Circus McGurkus Animals, Yertle the Turtle, The Grinch, Vlad Vladikoff!

I wonder what s under a hat such as that. It could be a creature they call the Ga-Zat Who balances things on his head, cause it s flat. Or a stripe-loving Pipester from Upper Mount Bat. Or a sort of a kind of a hat-wearing. Cat! Song see last page! Oh, the thinks you can think!

I ve never heard tell Of a small speck of dust that is able to yell. So you know what I think? I think there must Be someone on top of that small speck of dust! Some poor little person Who s shaking with fear That he ll blow in the pool! He has no way to steer! He s alone in the universe! Cat in the Hat Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, children and creatures. The smallest of the small, and the tallest of the tall! Come old and young! Come one and all! It s the Circus McGurkus! The world s greatest show On the face of the earth or wherever you go! Gertrude I m Gertrude McFuzz, and I live right next door. He s never done anything crazy before. He s always been friendly and loyal and kind. I just don t believe Horton s out of his mind! Mayzie, Sour Kangaroo I won t be gone long, kid. I give you my word. I ll hurry right back, cause I m that sort of bird! Oh, Horton, I promise! I ll fly back real soon. I d only be gone for, say, one afternoon!
