1 Getting Video into Moodle from other sources This is a three step process (Get Video Convert Video Upload Video), to begin, you will have been provided with the Video Tools package that consists of: Portable Firefox Web Browser (With video download add on) iwisoft Video Converter (Portable) This will run off a USB stick so no need for installation. Step 1 - Obtaining the video Using Youtube as an example: To begin we will open Portable Firefox 1. Go to 2. Browse for your desired video 3. Notice as your video plays you now have an extra button called Download 4. Click the download button, you will be presented with a number of options, we are after MP4 format as it is the best Quality or FLV*. It may take a little while to grab the video. *Take note that if you don t care about making the video available for all devices you can upload an FLV straight into Moodle, therefore skipping Step 2 completely 1

2 5. Choose save file from the pop up window and then choose OK 6. Your file will now download remember where you ve saved it as you will need it for the next step Step 2 Convert the video for Moodle Moodle doesn t always understand MP4 format movies so we have to convert the movie so it is visible not just on Moodle but also on portable devices like ipads. The best format for our purposes is still MP4 however MP4 movies can be encoded in different ways and Moodle as well as ipads, are really picky about which files they will play. Luckily our software (after extensive testing) will recode the video correctly Open the Video Converter (it will open a web page the first time which you can close): 1. Choose the Add button 2. Find the movie downloaded in step 1 and click open 3. The movie should be added to the queue window (you can repeat steps 1 and 2 to add multiple movies for conversion) 4. Now we need to choose the format, click the dropdown highlighted below: 2

3 5. From the Menu choose User Defined - > *.mp4 6. Now choose where to save the file, somewhere convenient that you can remember for step 3 is best 7. Finally click the large Start button 8. Your movie(s) will now start converting If you get an error at this point (with a pop up window in Chinese) go to the Troubleshooting section at the end of this document Step 3(i) Uploading to Moodle File This process will embed your Movie into Moodle, we will demonstrate this through adding a file resource. Log in to Moodle as normal and start editing the Moodle course you want to display the video 1. Click against the topic you want to add the video to 3

4 2. Choose File off the list of options then click Add 3. Now enter a suitable Name and Description for the file e.g Name: Why you shouldn t mix Mentos Mints and Coca Cola Description: Watch this video about the dangers of mixing Mentos mints and a 2 litre bottle of Coca Cola. Don t try this at home! 4. Now look at the content section and click the add button 5. On the next screen choose Upload a file and then the browse button 6. Find and select your converted file then click Open 7. Now your back in Moodle again, choose Upload this file Depending on the size and internet speed this could take a while so don t close any windows! 4

Finally, in the options section you can choose how you want your video to display when the pupil clicks the link and then click save and return to course to save Step 3(ii) Uploading to Moodle Labels and Pages You may just want to embed your video into a course element so it displays immediately without the pupil having to click a link to display it. The Moodle editor now contains a Moodle Media button for just this purpose. For this example we will use a label but it can also be done wherever you find the editor, such as assignments, quizzes, pages e.t.c. Log in to Moodle as normal and start editing the Moodle course you want to display the video 1. Click against the topic you want to add the video to 2. Choose Label off the list of options then choose Add 5

6 3. Click the Moodle Media Button 4. Click the Find or upload... text at the top of the little window which is a button despite not looking like one 5. Choose Upload a file and then the browse button 6. Find and select your converted file then click Open 7. Now your back in Moodle again, choose Upload this file Depending on the size and internet speed this could take a while so don t close any windows! 8. Finally Click save and return to course! Troubleshooting My video won t convert! Help! If you get the error message in step 2 then you will have to step through the process again except with a few more steps: Open the Video Converter (it will open a web page the first time which you can close): 1. Choose the Add button 2. Find the movie downloaded in step 1 and click open 3. The movie should be added to the queue window (you can repeat steps 1 and 2 to add multiple movies for conversion) 6

7 4. Now we need to choose the format, click the dropdown highlighted below: 5. From the Menu choose Common Video - > MPEG- 4 Movie (*.mp4) 6. Now choose settings 7. Change xvid to h Click OK 9. Now choose where to save the file, somewhere convenient that you can remember for step 3 is best 10. Finally click the large Start button 11. Your movie(s) will now start converting 7
