1 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Earth and Space Science 2.3B for Achievement Standard Exemplar for Internal Assessment Resource Earth and Space Science Level 2 Resource title: Taupo Volcanic Zone This exemplar supports assessment against: Achievement Standard Investigate geological processes in a New Zealand locality Student and grade boundary specific exemplar The material has been gathered from student material specific to an A or B assessment resource. 2 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Earth and Space Science 2.3B for Achievement Standard Task Requirements Students are required to select at least two different rock types found in a selected local area. For each rock type, produce a concise report, pamphlet or brochure that: 1. identifies the types of rock selected. 2. explains the role of plate tectonics in the formation of selected rock types. 3. explains the role of rock cycle processes in the formation of selected rock types. 4. explains how weathering and/or erosion has shaped the present day observable landforms in the locality. Notes: There are two distinct aspects to this assessment task: 1. Geological processes involved in the formation of 2 different rock types 2. How weathering and erosion produces an observable (current) landform. The link to the cause of volcanoes and their magma type is essential to the processes in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The reasons for the types of magma produced needs to be explained. It is assumed that the geological processes of weathering and/or erosion are discussed in relation to the formation of the TVZ current landforms. For grade differentiation, holistic judgement of student presentation should be based on comprehensiveness, accuracy and linkage of explanations. Crown 2011

To meet Excellence students need to investigate comprehensively geological processes in a New Zealand locality: discussing the link between the plate tectonic processes and the rock cycle processes that have formed the types of rocks in the locality discussing the link between the erosional processes with the shape of the current landforms in the locality. This script discusses the formation of the rocks of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The link to the hydration of the subducting rocks is at this level. The diagram shows the formation of the rhyolitic magma. The Oruanui and Taupo eruptions have been explained. To achieve the standard securely at Excellence the student would need to give evidence on the erosional forces and their effect on the landscape. They would also need to link these two processes. To meet Merit students need to investigate in depth geological processes in a New Zealand locality: explaining the plate tectonic and rock cycle processes that have formed the types of rocks in the locality explaining the erosional processes that have shaped the current landforms in the locality. This script explains the formation of two types of igneous rocks: pumice and rhyolite. The student has given a good comparison between rhyolite and pumice. They have explained the link between the rock cycle and plate tectonic forces. Erosional features have been mentioned - Rivers in flood but the explanation is not full and comprehensive. To meet Excellence this student would need to explain the link between erosional forces and the current landforms in the area. Crown 2011

The link to the plate tectonic boundaries is explained. The rock cycle diagrams, while correct, do not link to the formation of rhyolite and pumice. An explanation of the role of erosional formation on the landscape also needs to be explained. To achieve the standard securely at Merit the rock cycle would need to relate to the pumice and rhyolite. Crown 2011

To achieve the standards students need to investigate geological processes in a New Zealand locality: identifying the types of rock(s) found in the locality describing the plate tectonic and rock cycle processes that have formed the types of rocks in the locality describing the erosional processes that have shaped the current landforms in the locality. This script has described the rock types in the areas. The eruptions are also described. The significance of 4 key eruption areas has been described in the first three paragraphs. Erosion of the volcanoes has also been described. To meet Merit this script would need to explain the reasons for the different rock types within the Taupo Volcanic Zone and their link to the major eruptive phases. Crown 2011

There is a description of the tectonic plate boundary. Pumice has been selected as the rock and its origin described correctly. Two types of rock are required for this area. To achieve the standard securely the student would need to provide evidence of the role of erosion shaping the landforms. Crown 2011

This student has described the Taupo Volcanic zone but has not described how the rock types are formed and link to subduction. To achieve the standard students need to describe the rock types in the TVZ and erosional processes operating on the landforms today.
