2 Unit Goals: 8 lessons Students will comprehend the concepts of positive role models and friendships. Students will comprehend that each individual has unique talents and skills and will demonstrate the ability to identify the talents and skills of self and others. Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to make and keep positive friends.

3 Unit Goals Students will analyze the influence of friends on the behavior and well-being of others Students will demonstrate the ability to show acceptance of differences and to support and respect people who are different Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills including expressing appreciation and confronting annoying behavior; to enhance health

4 Parent involvement: The lessons we will provide in the Health and Wellness courses, will give your child information and opportunities to build health skills. However, we need your help! You are your child s first and most important teacher! We are so excited to partner with you on this journey of teaching children to develop healthy habits and avoid health risks. We truly believe YOU should be your child s mentor, first and foremost. We are here to help.

7 Identifying Positive Role Models and Friends Why do you think it is important to learn how to stay healthy?" Answers: So we can keep our bodies working their best they can So we can do all the things we enjoy doing So we can feel good. So we can get along with other people and have fun with them So we will stay healthy as we get older.

8 Identifying Positive Role Models and Friends Many people can help us learn how to stay healthy and encourage us to keep making healthy choices. We are going to learn how to have healthy relationships with our friends and families

9 Identifying Positive Role Models and Friends Role models are people whom we admire. We want to be like them. We might like how they treat other people. They might do the things we wish we could do. What role models say and do can influence or affect us a lot. Sometimes we think of famous people as role models. But people we know are models,too. Each of us knows people who affect what we do, what we say, and how we think.

Instead of names, say the relationship such as an aunt, or a type of job, such as a teacher." 12 Identifying Positive Role Models and Friends Our friends influence how we act, too, sometimes in positive ways and sometimes negative ways. We can choose friends who are positive influences. Let's see how many ways we can think of to tell the difference between positive and negative friends.

14 Identifying Positive Role Models and Friends Positive Friends Help you study or learn a new skill Follow home and school rules Show an interest in your hobbies and ideas Listen to you when you are excited scared, hurt, or sad Encourage you to do your best Encourage you to do what is healthy Obey the law Negative Friends Suggest or encourage you to break the rules or laws Be dishonest Be disrespectful or put down your ideas and interests or those of other people Talk you into doing something you don't want to do or something you know is wrong Treat people unkindly Destroy or harm property

15 Identifying Positive Role Models and Friends Parents: Ask your students to write or tell you a short story about being a positive influence on someone their age (give them 10 mins to complete) "Just as our friends and families influence us, we also influence them" "Think of a friend or a brother or sister who is about your age. Write a short story about a time you have been or will be a positive influence on that person."
