5 IP Networks An IP network is a communication network that uses Internet Protocol (IP) to send and receive messages between one or more computers. An IP network is implemented in Internet networks, local area networks (LAN) and enterprise networks. All hosts or network nodes must be configured with the TCP/IP suite and must have an IP address. 5

9 IP addressing Why? To communicate, systems require some methods for uniquely identifying sender and recipient. IP Addressing is one such method. 9
10 IP Encapsulation Encapsulation takes data from one layer and adds a header or trailer so that other layer can understand it. Layer 4 data IP Header IP protocol takes data Segments from Transport Layer. IP adds its own header information IP header contains information to deliver the packet like IP address etc. 10
